I Am The Avalanche needs no introduction. A descendent of the defunct New York group The Movielife, IATA returns with new material after their self-titled album released six years ago. Their new track, “Holy Fuck,” keeps the same rebellious tone found on their last album but with better production quality. Vinnie Caruana’s raspy vocals and the incessant chants plaster the song, adding aggression to the rhythm. Similar to songs like “I Took A Beating” off the self-titled record, “Holy Fuck” revs up at the intro and never lets up. While most of their previous tracks incorporated melodic lead guitar, this track focuses more on the rhythm with strong power chords.
Caruana’s lyrics mesh well with the rhythm guitar as he sings about a past relationship that went sour. His lyrics are more direct than profound although one of the last lines in the song he sings, “Change is something I accept, // but I can’t accept a stranger in you. // So please make this a dream.” It’s creative and poetic, but most of his lines are very relatable and down-to-earth. The song’s rhythm is upbeat and aggressive, but the basslines on the track are actually real swingy and fun. It resembles some of the walking baseline that older punk bands use. Lead guitar is very faint on this track, but it works well with the song. It’s heard dimly throughout the verses and is more noticeable on the pre-choruses and before the second verse. It’s a smart strategy for IATA.
With the song’s great production quality and IATA’s emotional rhythms and catchy melodies, there doesn’t seem to be any signs of disappointment. This song is sure to entertain fans of The Movielife while gaining a few fans from IATA’s brother band Nightmare of You. IATA’s new album, Avalanche United, hits stores this October.
