PropertyOfZack is glad to finally be posting our interview with Taylor from Daylight after multiple delays. Taylor and I discussed the band’s recent tour with Basement, their signing to Run For Cover Records, an upcoming 7” release, and a LP in 2012. Read up below!
For the record, could you state your name and role in Daylight?
My name is Taylor, and I play guitar and sing in Daylight.
The band really kicked off 2011 with a UK tour with Hostage Calm and Basement. How were those dates?
They were good. We had a few shows that fell through, but we had a pretty decent tour manager and set stuff up and improvised for last minute shows. Overall, everything went really well. We have a reputation of not getting along with bands, but it went well.
Immediately after that tour was announced, Run For Cover announced that you guys were their newest signees. When did the band and Jeff begin talking?
We actually started talking to Jeff a pretty long time ago. Probably right before our last 7” came out. I guess we just really slacked on doing stuff. I finally called him and asked what we wanted to do. We decided to go for it.
Was it an obvious choice to pair up with the label and join a group of the rest of your friends?
He expressed interest, and I really like Jeff as a person. We’re friends with a lot of the bands on Run For Cover too.
Daylight released Sinking and Dispirit over the past few years. How has the reception to those releases been?
Some people say it sounds like Hot Water Music or that it’s nothing special, but I don’t give a shit. I only get mad a little when we get compared to Hot Water Music because no one in our band is that into Hot Water Music and I don’t think we sound like them.
This year you guys put out an acoustic 7” via Run For Cover. Were fans into that?
We planned on doing that, but we were just going to put it out on tapes. He told us he’d put it out. We planned on doing it beforehand, but he volunteered to put it out.
The band is currently out on the road with Basement. How excited are you for this leg of dates and to be with Basement again after the UK tour?
I’ve definitely never been more anxious to tour with a band. We got along super well when we toured Europe together. I just feel like our bands match really well. We all get along super well.
Is there a reason you guys haven’t done a bunch of touring this year?
Sort of. Our drummer runs a company called Cold Cuts Merch. He’s pretty busy with that. That’s why. The rest of us would like to tour more and we’re trying to figure out ways around it.
Are you looking to tour more this fall or winter?
The rest of us want to tour as much as possible, but you can’t do that when everyone isn’t on the same page. Before, Joe was in another band so it was tough to march everyone’s schedules.
Has the writing process for your new record kicked off yet?
We have a new 7” recorded. It has to be mixed and stuff like that. That’s supposed to come out this year. We kind of slacked so long though. We’re going to do an LP next year as well. We started writing stuff for that.
POZ: How many songs are on the 7”?
Taylor: Four.
When would you like to have the full-length out?
I think we’re just trying to write. We’re taking our time with it. We don’t even have the new 7” out. I like that we’re writing a bunch of stuff for the new LP though. We write and demo and then rewrite things. We’re trying to take our time. I’ve never done a full-length, so I want people to think it’s awesome.
How does the new material sound compared to the older stuff?
I guess it’s a little different. It’s a little more rock-y. It’s not like it’s drastically different.
What’s the timeline for trying to record, if there is one?
We’re trying to go with the flow. We don’t want to put any deadlines on stuff. We’re doing it as fluently as possible without forcing anything.
What about a release for the 7”?
It’d be nice to have it out in the fall. If it comes out in the winter time, that’s what happens. I’d like to have it done soon. It’s fully tracked. We just have to have it mixed, mastered, and do the cover art and name.
Are there plans to tour more this year?
We plan to. I don’t know when or any details, but I know we’re definitely trying to as much as we can.
