PropertyOfZack recently had the chance to interview the lovely Kenny Vasoli of Person L. Kenny and I discussed the reception to Person L’s last album, The Positives, their upcoming release with Weatherbox, what their new record is sounding like, as well as a lo-fi acoustic album that we may or may not see in the near future. Be sure to read up, it’s a good one!
For the record, could you state your name and role in Person L?
Ken Vasoli- Guitar/Vocals/Backup Dancer
The Positives has been out for nearly a year now. Can you talk about the reaction you’ve received from it to this point?
People seem to like it, I think it’s a grower for some and I’ve run into people who are just now first hearing it which is nice.
How would you compare the reaction regarding The Positives to the reaction for Initial?
I’d say the reactions were pretty comparable but I’d like to think The Positives was a bit more accepted by listeners.
Since the album was released, Person L has continually been on the road whether it has been with John Nolan of Taking Back Sunday/Straylight Run or Copeland on their farewell tour. How have the tours for the year been going in your mind?
In my mind they all certainly went well, let’s hope that’s the case in reality. The tour with John was a great friend-making experience, thanks to that tour John and I were able to rekindle a friendship and also made buds with the delightful Brian Bonz and co. Copeland was decidedly the best tour yet, people seemed to dig it and we got to help send off an amazing (and under-rated) band of our time.
Recently at a one off show in Long Island with Manchester Orchestra it was announced that the Person L/Weatherbox split would finally be happening. When should we expect to see this released?
We’ll be recording our tracks next weekend in a warehouse. I haven’t talked with the label or Brian about release dates yet but my guestimate would be sometime in the early new year. Its gonna be grungetastic.
How many songs from you guys should we expect to see on it?
Two.
What was the delay in the past few years from making it happen?
It was originally meant to come out on Doghouse but things kept getting pushed back and then eventually it got swept under the rug. Brian emailed me a few months back about revisiting the idea with new songs from both of us. When I heard some of the new Weatherbox material I was into it immediately, pure bangers!
There are no tour dates on the books right now. Will we be seeing any announced for the late fall or winter?
All I can say is maybe, nothing planned as of yet but it be nice to get some miles in with a cool band.
Has the writing process started for the next record? How far into it are you?
We are indeed writing a new batch of songs at the moment. We are three or four deep now.
Are there any differences from this record to the band’s previous ones in terms of writing?
I think this next record will have more of a dance-floor element to it, we’ll be making full-use of the double percussion. We have been listening to lots of Talking Heads and LCD Soundsystem since the last release and I think that’s gonna shine through.
When would you like to hit the studio and have it released by?
It would most likely be next year on both counts.
Should we expect anything else in the not too distant future from the Person L camp?
Keep a look out for that Weatherbox 7”, it’ll be coming out through Academy Fight Song asap. We are also working on this lo-fi acoustic record called “House Sounds” that seems to be turning into our “Smile” that could be released in 10 years when the laziness lessens.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thanks for listening. I’m going to see Colour Revolt in Philly tonight, everyone should give them a spin..great band!
