Senses Fail released “St. Anthony” as the first taste of The Fire, and everyone took a worried breath as it was met with poor reception due to a lack of energy and for a lack of better word, fire. Just days after releasing the title track off of the record, that worried breath was exhaled with an overwhelming excitement by most fans.
“The Fire” might be one of Senses Fail’s best songs to date as Buddy Nielson’s vocals follow the trend of improvement album after album but this time coupled with lyrical leaps not seen on the standout tracks of Life Is Not A Waiting Room.
Crisp and tight guitar parts over not overwhelming but hard hitting drums set the stage for a vocally driven song as Nielsen sings, “It’s ok to feel lost // Walk through the flames and see
// You’re only left with what you need // We’re only here for the journey.”
The song would have been met with great reception if it suddenly stopped after the last chorus, but the bridge is what elevates it to an all-time Senses Fail’s best as Buddy lets loose with screams in a way you’ve never heard them before: vulnerable and raw. He screams:
“I’m finding new ways to make the same mistake
// Putting my dreams on to paper and then folding them into planes
// Then I left them go because when in Rome
// I set fire to what I love the most.”
