It’s been a long time since Ben Jorgensen has released anything— rather, since Armor For Sleep has released anything. So when Ben announced he would be releasing a new EP, There Is Nowhere Left To Go, it’s safe to say that a whole bunch of people dug up their copy of What To Do When You Are Dead and hit the repeat button. Unfortunately the repeat button isn’t needed for this.

There Is Nowhere Left To Go starts out with “Changed My Mind,” which is by far the best track on the EP and proves to be a great part of a whole that can’t hold up to the same expectations. His vocals remain eerie and front and center as he sings, “I don’t want to be an old man on the sea // Cursing the world // Not a soul at my wake.”

“Only Just A Memory” isn’t a bad follow-up as it brings back memories of early Armor For Sleep and Jorgensen keeps the “at sea” theme going as he sings, “Only just a memory // But you still wash up on the shores of my mind” over a calming and subtle synth part.

“Don’t Go” is first let down on the EP as the lyrics ruin any possibility of the Ace Ender-like guitar part fighting through to maintain some sort of pull, which seems to be the case on the rest of There Is Nowhere Left To Go.

“The Color Of Your Eyes” features the best vocal performance on the EP, but the track’s chorus hurts what could have been the EP’s best due to lame lyrics and unfitting melodies. “Right Here With Me” is the EP’s closer, but unfortunately the guitar part sounds too similar to much of the rest and Jorgensen singing “I swear to God this year // I’ll be a good boy // I’ll be a good boy // Because you belong with me right here” seems just depressing in light of his apparently misplaced writing ability.

There are certainly spots for hope on There Is Nowhere Left To Go, but Ben Jorgensen’s use of awkwardly placed “pop” throughout hinder any lasting value.
