From Vinnie Fiorello of Less Than Jake:
Fucked Up - David Comes To Life
Junior Battles - Idle Ages
Bomb The Music Industry - Vacation
The Wonder Years - Suburbia
Mastodon - The Hunter
Bayside - Killing Time
The Roots - Undun
Red CIty Radio - Dangers Of Standing Still
DoomTree - No Kings
Sharks - The Joys Of Living
From JR Wasilewski of Less Than Jake:
The Smoking Popes - This Is Only A Test - Wish We Were
The Smoking Popes are the most famous band from Chicago you may have never heard of. With bands like Alkaline Trio and Bayside paying homage by covering their classic song ‘Megan’, this is one band that you owe to yourself to check out. “Wish We Were” is a perfect example of everything that I love about The Popes: heartfelt lyrics, a ridiculously catchy chorus and Josh Caterer’s smooth crooning. This record should be on everyone’s top 10 list this year.
The Swellers - Good For Me - Runaway
I’ve always loved The Swellers. The brother’s Deiner, Ryan and Anto are not only amazing people but one of the best live pop punk bands I’ve ever seen. Their latest release is the most balanced of their releases to date. The lead track, ‘Runaway’ is, in my opinion, the perfect set off to the record: a short, blasting song that would let any unfamiliar listener know exactly what they can expect from the best band Flint, Michigan has ever produced.
Bayside - Killing Time - Mona Lisa
I am more than happy to restate my feelings about this record: THIS is the record the ‘scene’ needed. Not only is it musically compelling and challenging, it contains some of Anthony’s finest lyrics to date. I was lucky enough to hear a demo of ‘Mona Lisa’ on a road trip with Ant and Steve Klein from New Found Glory and when I did, I knew it would be my favorite song on the record. I was right. Listen to it and you’ll know why.
Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee, Part II - Too Many Rapper’s” - featuring Nas
What else can be written about The Beastie Boys? A lot, actually. A mainstay for almost 30 years, it seems that they keep constantly reinventing themselves. When you add the lyrical genius of Nas to the mix, how could it miss? This track is an old fashioned ‘neck breaker’ and every time I hear it I like it even more. According to Ad Rock, although “Grandpa’s been rapping since ‘83 on”, with tracks like this, I hope they never stop.
Bad Rabbits - Stick Up Kids (Re-issue) - Neverland
When I was in middle school in the late 80’s/early 90’s, the ‘new jack swing’ sound was at it’s peak. Acts like Guy, Keith Sweat and Bobby Brown had me dancing the same way Bad Rabbits have kids dancing today. Bad Rabbits are the new undisputed kings of this sound and a band that so many people told me about, I forced myself to go see them. I’m so glad I did! Their live show is one of the best around. Their entire EP is amazing, but ‘Neverland’ is the first song of theirs that grabbed me. When Dua sings, ‘No! I’ll never grow up!’, I’m right there with him, slide stepping. Get this EP. Warning: upon listening, you may shake your ass off.
Paul Simon - So Beautiful or So What - The Afterlife
If you don’t know who Paul Simon is, you really should take a few minutes and do some quick research. Don’t worry. I’ll wait…..
Now that you know you’ve heard his music since you can remember, here is the latest record from this icon. I saw him play two of these songs live and I figured getting this record might be a good risk. I should have known there was no risk involved. It’s brilliant. He’s not only a songwriting genius, but has a way of story telling that makes you want to listen more. Paul Simon is the real deal and may be someone your grandparents listened to, but that doesn’t mean you should deny yourself of such fantastic music.
Primus - Green Naugahyde - The Last Salmon Man (Fisherman’s Chronicles, Part IV)
I first got into Primus in 1993. For me, they were the perfect blend of rock and funk. The band went on hiatus in 2001 and this is their first studio release in a decade. Les Claypool’s love affair with fishing has been chronicled in their ‘Fisherman’s Chronicles’ (for those unaware, “John the Fisherman” of Guitar Hero fame was the first installment). “The Last Salmon Man” is the latest chapter. Telling the struggles of the fishing industry, this definitely is NOT your run of mill pop song and, to be honest, I’m glad it isn’t. If you like Primus, you should love this record.
PUJOL - Nasty, Brutish and Short - Mayday
The second EP on my ‘best of’ list. The title perfectly sums up this EP. Daniel Pujol has created a sound that is more than just garge rock. It pure pop genius. Sonically, it has the sound of something recorded years before its release date of a few month ago. With all the auto-tuned dance pop that has been suffocating the music industry these days, hearing something like this is refreshing to my ears. With ‘Mayday’, Pujol has written what I consider to be a perfect pop song with a chorus I can’t stop singing. In my perfect world, THIS is the kind of band that would be on everyone’s radar.
Adele - 21 - Turning Tables
This record will probably be on almost every ‘Best of’ list and, ‘crying and pigging out on cheesecake’ SNL skits aside, it deserves to be. This really is an incredible record. Adele sings with such power and conviction, Im convinced you’d have to be dead to not feel something when you hear her. “Turning Tables” is the story of her conflict of being in love with someone she knows she has to leave. It’s beautifully written, beautifully performed and if you cry listening to it, it’s ok. You’re not the first. Or the last.
The Foo Fighters - Wasting Light - Bridge Burning
I’m not sure I have to write too much here, but I will say this record almost got left off my list. Not because it’s not a good record but because every fan of Foo Fighters should know by now that anything they put out is going to be pretty solid. ‘Wasting Light’ proves it. Recorded on reel to reel in Dave Grohl’s garage, the musicianship displayed on this record should make everyone go and practice their instruments. And hey, if you can get Bob Mould to sing on your record, you must be doing SOMETHING right. I chose ‘Bride Burning’ because its a kick ass last song for this list.
