From Tanner Meritt of O’Brother:

I couldn’t seem to pick a favorite record of this year, but the top 3 are all very close. I would also like to say that we’ve had some amazing friends release some amazing records this year. Manchester Orchestra- Simple Math, Thrice- Major/Minor, The Dear Hunter- The Color Spectrum, All Get Out- The Season, La Dispute- Wildlife, Moving Mountains- Waves, Touche Amore- Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me, Psychic Babble- My Brother’s Ears/ My Sister’s Eyes. So I could pretty much fill a top 0 list of albums made by those that are dear to me. However, I think Myspace taught us 0 years ago (with the top 8 that rating your friends against one another is a silly and hurtful notion. So, for that reason, they are now all part of the axis of evil.

Strange Mercy - St. Vincent
I just got into this album, so I’m excited about it. And I must say, this might be (tonally the dirtiest pop record ever recorded; even more so than the song self proclaimed as such by Christina Aguilera.  Produced by Jon Congleton, the use of deep sampled kick-drum, distorted synths, and the most disgusting guitar tone you’ve ever heard makes for a surprisingly smooth listen.
Notable Tracks: Chloe in the Afternoon, Surgeon
Burst Apart - The Antlers
This has probably been my most listened to album this year.  Mainly because it’s great background music, and not too demanding of your attention. Definitely an easy listen that has the potential to stick with you for some time.
Notable Tracks: Parentheses, Putting the Dog to Sleep
The King of Limbs - Radiohead
I know a lot of people were disappointed by this album. It’s true that this is not the best Radiohead has put out by far, but it is still better than almost everything else out there. This album definitely grew on me throughout the course of this year, and Codex is probably my favorite song released this year.
Notable Tracks: Codex, Lotus Flower
Nine Types of Light - TV on the Radio
I’ve been listening to this band for quite some time, and honestly I was pretty disappointed in their release prior to this one Dear Science. So I was pretty excited when they came out with Nine Types of Light, everything I wanted it to be.
Notable Tracks: Will Do, Killer Crane
James Blake - James Blake
One of the most interesting singer-songwriter albums I’ve heard. Combine minimalistic song-craft with weird trip-hop production, some of the best male vocal performances since Jeff Buckley’s Grace, and you’ve got James Blake’s debut full-length.
Notable Tracks:  The Wilhelm Scream, Limit to Your Love (Feist Cover
Hurry Up We’re Dreaming - M83
M83’s new album is a 22 track 2xLP. I’ll admit, it’s too much material to take in. I feel like they could have condensed it into one 2-4 track album and it would have been far more cohesive. However, it has some of the densest song arrangements I’ve heard. Heavy, spacious synths along with (surprisingly catchy verbed out vocals make for a vast sound that you can get lost in.
Notable Tracks: Midnight City, Wait
White Silence - Cave In
For Cave In’s new album White Silence it seems like they abandoned the more spacey feel of their more recent records and went back to their more aggressive fast-paced roots. I loved the spacey records but they do it all so well. There are a few slower tracks, which are my favorite, but everything on this album is great.
Notable Tracks: Sing My Love, Reanimation, Heartbreaks, Earthquakes
Bon Iver - Bon Iver
Probably my favorite album production this year. There is so much going on in these songs, yet somehow they manage to retain their intimate intent. There is so much subtle ear-candy that really makes this album sound like it was carefully crafted.
Notable Tracks: Michicant, Calgary
Attention Please - Boris
I just got this album. Boris has always been hit or miss with me. Partly because their catalogue is so immense and diverse. Some of their albums are pretty minimal while some are just straight shredding for an hour. This is probably their most accessible album (at least that I have heard. Almost poppy at certain times, but still eclectic, heavy, and creative.
Notable Tracks:  Hope, You
The Hunter - Mastodon
This is my favorite Mastodon album to date. It seems like with every release they’re a little less Metal and a little more just badass heavy rock, and I love that progression. Their albums have always sounded incredible and this one is no exception. Great guitar tones.
