From Balance & Composure:

Bon Iver - Bon Iver
I was a little worried about this record being able to top “For Emma, Forever Ago” but it did.  At first listen I was confused on what they were thinking but as I gave it more time to grow on me this became my favorite record of the year.  It’s so heavy on an emotional level and the music is so powerful.  I have had many revelations this year while listening to this record and that hasn’t happened to me since “for Emma…” came out.  The lyrics to Beth/Rest are some of my favorite lyrics ever written.  This album is genius and flawless. - JS
Kanye West and Jay - Z - Watch The Throne
If you do not know by now, we are HUGE hip hop fans and have been for some time but we are even bigger fans of kanye and jay z so when we heard they were making a collab record we nearly shit our pants.  We waited forever for this to come out with high expectations and they were definitely met.  We listened to this pretty much the whole time we were in Australia and even set up to it before we played.  The record is really inspiring like all of their previous work but the hooks and the beats are top notch.  You have to have respect for these two guys who are constantly changing the game and at the same time, making great, quality music.  This shit is still cray. - JS
Sainthood Reps - Monoculture
We have been eagerly waiting for this full length and this year it finally came. It by far exceeded all of our high expectations.  It is so heavy, and at the same time it is really melodic.  It grooves in a way that a lot of records don’t with heavy drums which I don’t hear in a lot of releases recently.  The guitar tones they got on this record too, floor me and make me jealous. There are so many aspects of this record that I dig that it is hard to put into a few sentences.  It is a record that everyone needs to listen to. - EP
Manchester Orchestra - Simple Math
This record rocks so much harder then I was anticipating.  It took me by storm and in the first 3 months I couldn’t turn it off.  They are tuning down and they are writing heavy rock songs with incredible melodies.  They seem to make a perfect blend of different southern musical styles and throw it into big, deep rock songs on this album.  It’s got upbeat tracks and then very mellow songs too where Andy Hull shines.  I must listen to the song “Mighty” every single day, and head bang all the way through. - EP
The Joy Formidable - The Big Roar
None of us had really heard of The Joy Formidable before this record came out. Pretty sure it’s their first LP and it’s simply great. The band is a three piece and truly sound as if there was 6 of them or something like that. The drums are huge, guitars are loud and the bass is driving as hell. It has a very live feel to it. All important things when making a great rock record. Everything on this record sounds perfectly full. What sets them and this record apart specifically is Ritzy Bryan’s vocals, lyrics and guitar work. She has tons of catchy hooks all throughout the record and on top of that she straight up shreds at guitar. It’s hard not to bang your head to it. - BRV
Title Fight - Shed
I think everybody had been waiting for this record for quite sometime, myself included. I was interested and eager in thinking of how the band would take it direction wise; if it would be faster or slower, heavier or softer and I think they nailed it perfectly. It was one of those records that you had a preconceived notion of what it would sound like and when you first hear it’s 10 times better than that. I think I actually laughed when I heard it for this first time and was just like “those motherfuckers”. I don’t think there’s a day that goes by that I haven’t listened to at least one song off of this record and I think all of us as a band can agree that it’s one of “THOSE records” where in 10 or 15 years it’ll define what went on during this current musical time period. - BRV
TOUCHE’ AMORE’ - Parting the Sea Between Brightness and Me
First listen through and I knew this was going to be a top contender for my favorite record this year. Having so many really great records come out this year it was highly competitive, but I can say without doubt that this is my favorite record this year. Every song is just as strong as the last, each one being more meaningful than the last. The lyrics are what really make this my favorite record this year, I feel I can relate to this record on a much higher level then anything else this year. We had the privilege of touring with Touché’ this past summer and there wasn’t a night where I didn’t watch their set, every night they would just kill it, new and old songs. This is a must listen to record. - Warner
La Dispute - Wildlife
I’m not going to lie; I slept on this band for quite some time. After seeing them at Bled Fest 2010 my opinion on the band was quickly changed. I think their first record, Somewhere at the Bottom of the River Between Vega and Altair, is the only record I listened to for the rest of that summer. Their new record was one that I had on my ‘top ten records of this year list’ before I had even heard it. I had very high expectations and Wildlife met everyone. With the lyrics speaking of death a lot, and the music reflecting those lyrics perfectly Wildlife is quick possibly one of the saddest records I have ever heard. - Warner
Into It Over It – Proper
This album flows so well from start to finish, it’s so easy to get lost in it.  The melodies are always stuck in my head, and the chord progressions are the bee’s knees.  The mixture of faster upbeat songs and slower ambient songs is perfect. It’s by far my favorite release he has done. - A.S.
Bright Eyes – The Peoples Key
I was totally taken back by this record.  I really wasn’t expecting to like it as much as I do.  I heard “Approximate Sunlight” for the first time and it was exactly what I felt like I needed in a song, and the rest of the album was just as fulfilling. - A.S.

From Adam Vass of La Dispite:

Balance and Composure - Separation
This record was one of my most anticipated for 2011 and even exceeded my expectations. The songs are great, the vocals are incredible, the lyrics are hard-hitting, and I don’t think a week has gone by since it’s release that I haven’t listened to it, and I don’t think that trend will change any time soon.
Bright Eyes - The People’s Key
Ever since I was in high school, I’ve had a weak spot for Bright Eyes. I’ve always felt that their music has matured as I’ve gotten older and each record seems to fit where I am in my life. With the newest record, its just a band playing songs; its not too folky, its no too electronic, and its not too sappy (although it still has emotional moments like any bright eyes record would), and thats just what I want.
Pianos Become the Teeth - The Lack Long After
Anyone who has heard this record knows why it belongs in everyone’s top albums of the year list, and those who haven’t heard it are missing out. I’ve never been so emotionally affected by music before. And once you can successfully listen to it without crying, you get to enjoy how intricate and great the instruments are on this album.
The Pains of Being Pure at Heart - Belong
This is the kind of record that could have been released ten or twenty years ago and still made perfect sense. I would dance with strangers to this record, and there are very few records I could say that about. Stand-out song: Heart in your Heartbreak.
O’Brother - Garden Window
I admittedly hadn’t heard these guys until our tour with them (and Moving Mountains and Thrice), but getting to see them each night and grow close as friends has been an incredible experience. Now they’ve released their first full length, over an hour of crushing riffs, soaring vocals, and crazy dynamic range that leaves you guessing where the song will go next. It is both powerful and delicate and their ability to mix the two elements is a rare trait in modern music.
Sainthood Reps - Monoculture
Another first-full-length, Sainthood Reps’ debut caught me off guard in the best way possible. My friend Dave gave me their record thinking I’d like it because it was grungy and he didn’t know much more about them, and we spent at least the next week with it on repeat. They somehow seamlessly blended a lot of my favorite elements of grunge and emo music into a really interesting and powerful record and I think a year or two from now, people will kick themselves for not catching on to it sooner.
Into It. Over It. - Proper
Evan has such a deep discography between 52 weeks, a series of splits, and all his work with other bands, but I was so stoked when he finally had this cohesive full length. Every song is great, the flow of the whole album is very natural, and he left me anxiously waiting to see what he does next.
Joyce Manor - Joyce Manor
This is a record I admittedly slept on, but it got to a point where I was hearing their name so much and people singing their songs and had to find out for myself what the hype was about, and was far from disappointed. Stand-out song: Constant Headache.
Basement - I Wish I Could Stay Here
I had been following this band after hearing some earlier 7”s and was a fan already, but this record blew me away. I think they discovered their strengths and wrote the songs they’ve wanted to write their whole time as a band, and the end result is a great record.
Vivian Girls - Share the Joy
This album is beautiful and unsettling at the same time. The songs are catchy and pretty, but the production and delivery have something very eerie about them that I can’t place, but I’ll keep listening to the album and hope to discover it, and if I end up just listening for years to come with no solution, I wouldn’t be upset.
