“O Holy Night” might be toughest of the traditional Christmas carols to sing, with deceptively tricky chord changes and a soaring, range-challenging crescendo at its apex, but it rewards those who are up for the challenge, and in the hands of States’s Mindy White it catches flight on angels’ wings. For their part, her bandmates go a little heavy on the dramatics – simple acoustic guitar lines fade into more fully realized backings, chimes and industrial clangs crash through the refrain, heavy atmosphere wafts in and out – but bedeviling as they might be, there’s no suppressing that gorgeous voice. It’s enough to make a sinner repent.
