PropertyOfZack had the chance to sit down with Cameron and David from The Downtown Fiction before they took the stage on the first date of their run with The Summer Set. Cameron, David, and I discussed the response to their latest EP, just how far the band has come, and their debut full-length. Read up and enjoy!

For the record, could you state your name and role in The Downtown Fiction?
David: I’m David and I play bass.
Cameron: I’m Cameron and I sing and play guitar.

Today starts the band’s journey with The Summer Set. How stoked are you guys?
Cameron: Really stoked.
David: Yeah, it’s going to be great.
Cameron: It’s going to be a great show and we’ve never played with The Summer Set on tour, besides Warped Tour, so it’ll be fun to get to know those guys. We already know Stereo and we’ll also get a chance to meet Austin Gibbs.

The Downtown Fiction actually played a show in New York City just last Friday. How did that go?
Cameron: Yeah, we did an in-store at Juicy Couture. It was interesting for sure.
David: A lot of people there.
Cameron: It was definitely fun. We didn’t get a chance though to wear the sweatsuits.

Back in March the band released Best I Never Had. Seven months later, how would you say the reception has been?
Cameron: Really surprising, actually.
David: It’s been really cool that that’s come out like seven months ago and people are still digging the songs.
Cameron: It’s pretty abnormal for an EP, to be able to get that much life out of it and see people still kind of responding to it. It’s been pretty crazy for us as a band that hasn’t even put out a full-length.
POZ: Is it great to get more and more people involved with the EP after so long?
Cameron: Yeah, that’s kind of it. We’ve just been able to spread it out and introduce it to a lot of new people.

How was the writing and recording process for that EP?
Essentially, I’d be at home and I’d write the song as an acoustic song and then, David’s a really great producer, and we’ll sit down and we’ll demo out the song. Then we’ll bring it to our producer, his name is Stacy Jones, in LA and if he gives us the thumbs up then we put it on the record. That’s essentially what we did. We just sent him a bunch of demos and that’s how we’ve been recording the full-length. We worked with him on the EP and now we’re doing the full-length with him. It’s been great.

How has your relationship with Photo Finish Records been at this point?
David: Awesome. They’re a great label. Really cool, really good to be working with them.

A music video was released back in late August, but might we see another single or even another video appear in the not too distant future, or was that kind of you guys putting the EP to bed?
Cameron: I’m not sure. We were discussing doing another video, like one more. It’s possible, but I know that we’re all really excited to move on to the full-length.

Where exactly is the writing process for the full-length at?
David: We’ve finished recording, pretty much.
Cameron: When are we going to finish recording or where’s the process?
POZ: The writing and recording process.
Cameron: We’re pretty much done. We might do one or two more tracks, but I think we’re pretty much there. It should be out in the spring. We already hit the studio. We have like 13 tracks.
POZ: So a definite spring release?
Cameron: Yeah, sounds like it.

How would you compare the sound of the newer material to Best I Never Had?
Cameron: I think it takes a lot more chances and I think it gives a better reflection of what we want to be than even the EP has. I think it’s a little more adventurous and I think people are really going to like it. It’s not like it’s so far away from what we’ve done in the past, but it’s definitely more honed in.
David: Yeah, I think it’s more us than anything else.

Did you guys start writing for that as soon as you put out the EP?
Cameron: Yeah.
David: It’s been a while that we’ve been working on the songs.

The band is also down as a fall 2010 Freshmen 5 for MTVU. How did that come together and can you explain what it means?
Cameron: I couldn’t tell you much more about it than you could get online, but essentially it means that MTV liked the band. I know there’s a voting thing, but it was just cool to be a part of it. I don’t even know who ended up winning it.
David: I think it’s still going on.
Cameron: It was cool just to be mentioned with other artists. There’s a great indie-rock band called Best Coast on there and Bruno Mars is on there. It was just cool to be mentioned.

It’s really no secret that you guys have come such a long away in so little time with a song appearance on The Jersey Shore, as well as a lot of other help from MTV. Have the last few months been a surprise to even you?
Cameron: Yeah, and it’s funny, The Jersey Shore show that put our song on there, we didn’t really expect it to get the response it did, but because it’s such a popular show and so many people watch, we saw a huge response and I think it was cool. We don’t really watch that much television and we don’t know the show too well, but it was really cool just to be part of something that’s so big and it really helped us reach out to some people that would have never listened to us otherwise. That was really cool and it kick started a lot of things.

When this tour finishes up you guys don’t have anything else on the books. Might there be any select touring before the New Year?
Cameron: I don’t think before the New Year; I think after the New Year. I think sometime in January we’ll do another tour.

Do you guys just plan on keeping out on the road after the album’s out?
David: Oh yeah. I think once the album hits we’ll be touring non-stop for a while.

Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else that you’d like to add?
Cameron: Look for our video on MTV, look for our music on iTunes, and we’re also being played on Sirius Radio.
