PropertyOfZack had the chance to interview Every Atlas to discuss their brand new album, burn down the forests!, not too long ago. Every Atlas is one of the reasons PropertyOfZack is even around today, so read up on the new album, past tours, and the future!

For the record, could you state your names and roles in Every Atlas?
Alex: My name is Alex and I sing and play guitar.
Dustin: My name is Dustin and I also sing and play guitar.

In just a year Every Atlas has now released two albums and an EP. The demos for the latest, burn down the forests!, were created quite a while before you guys entered the studio. Was it nice to have so much time to let the demos sink in and not having to rush into recording?
Alex: In a way, yes. It was nice because when we finally did get into the studio, we pretty much knew exactly how we wanted the songs to sound. With The Ghosts of Everyone, a lot of the parts were made up as we were recording them. We started recording songs for that album before we knew what the album was going to be. So it was a good feeling going in knowing the songs were basically done.
Dustin: I believe it was good for us just for experience sake. Who knows how we’ll record the next one; maybe underwater, maybe in space. I’m starting to believe anything’s possible.

burn down the forests! certainly “sounds” like Every Atlas, but it’s very different than Ghosts. Has there been a big shift in influences from the writing process then to the writing process now?
Dustin: Oh most definitely. This album was absolutely more of a collaborative effort and in the end I was very happy with the result. The friends we made as well as contacts for the band was a huge step in the right direction.
Alex: I just think we were ready to make a different record. We definitely don’t want to make the same record twice. I think the influences that we had for this record were still big influences on the first record, just in a different way. And obviously as time passes we find more music to listen to.

Colton Saylor was a name unheard of for you when Ghosts was released, but it seems easy to pair Every Atlas with that name now. What has the friendship of Colton meant to the band?
Alex: This record wouldn’t have been possible without Colton. At least not how you hear the songs now. We all have very similar music tastes, so that helps when collaborating with new people. More importantly, Colton is just an amazing person. The very first show we ever played with him he offered to play drums on our record and have his friend record us. Less than a year later, it happened. That couldn’t have been a better experience for us.
Dustin: Colton not only made this album possible, but in a way was a solid foundation for the inspiration behind it. At least speaking for myself of course. I stumbled upon his page by chance around October of last year and it’s just amazing how these kinds of things just grow. I’m very happy to call him my friend and a member of this band.

This is your first physical release. How great of a feeling is it to hold something tangible that you’ve made in your hands?
Alex: I can’t even describe how great it feels. I’ve never been more proud of something.
Dustin: It’s simply unreal. I mean especially coming from where we came from and looking back on how we used to produce physical copies and such. It’s really amazing and I’m glad we get to share it with how many people we have so far.

This is also your first release on Quote Your Pulse Records. Could you talk a little about the label and how Every Atlas got hooked up with Jonathan?
Alex: Dustin was the one who found QYPR and Jon, so I can’t really say. But it ended up working out wonderfully. Jon has helped expand our career- and more importantly, our fan base- more than we ever could have hoped.
Dustin: I don’t mean to disagree with Alex here, but Jon had actually messaged us showing interest in our music. He’s been a terrific help with our music and I’m happy to be part of his label.

The band went out on its first major tour this summer throughout multiple states. How was that experience for you?
Alex: We actually ended up just doing shows in California. It was supposed to be throughout multiple states, but a lot of the shows ended up falling through. It was still the most fun I’ve had doing anything. There were a lot of very funny moments and the shows were consistently fun.
Dustin: It was definitely an eye opener. We went through multiple cities seeing dozens of different people but the most amazing thing (at least for me) is just how hospitable and humble and just downright generous they were to us. It’s really nice meeting people and within seconds knowing that even if they don’t particularly stay in your life that they have changed yours for the better. I really cherish that.

This past Friday you opened up for The Classic Crime who are signed to Tooth & Nail Records. How was that experience?
Alex: Crazy. That was a really fun show. It was basically a stage someone built in their backyard… they fed everyone and made sure nobody went thirsty. Even admission was free. Straylight Run has played there before, so that was cool to see.
Dustin: It was one of the most unexpected and underestimated shows we’ve ever been apart of. The Faultline was a venue I’ve never even heard mentioned before but in the end has been the host to a number of very well known bands such as: Artist vs. Poet, Evaline, A Change of Pace and countless others. On top of that it’s a recording studio as well! I was sincerely blown away.

Should we expect anymore scattered tour dates throughout 2010?
Alex: Yeah. We have a few things planned to try and support the new record. I don’t think there will be anything too big till the New Year.

What about touring options or plans pushing into next year?
Alex: Next year I hope we do a more planned out, multiple state tour. But we’ll just have to see what happens. We want to tour as much as possible.

Touring aside, what exactly does the future for Every Atlas hold in terms of another release?
Alex: We will hopefully be doing a split 7’ with another band sometime in the summer. I’m really excited for that. We want to try to wait a while before we do another record. Maybe an EP at some point. It’s hard for us not to write and record constantly.
Dustin: We’re always actively writing and posting demos on multiple sites so just keep in touch with us and I’m sure you’ll pick up a song or twelve.

Is there anything else we should be on the lookout for from Every Atlas?
Alex: Not that I can think of. Dustin’s band Creature Colony is putting out a record soon. I’d keep an eye out for that, cause it’s gonna be really good.

Thanks so much for your time!
