Virginia Beach, VA band Turnover is the next gritty pop-punk band to invade and change the music scene. A band that prides itself on its fast, energetic, and relatable sound, Turnover is experimenting with song structure and moody undertones. They’ll be touring this summer, the season for such upbeat tunes, and will release a split with their buddies Citizen soon. Read on to learn of their theories about the music industry and quite an interesting supposed band ritual.

Who’s in your band?
Casey Getz plays drums, Kyle Kojan plays guitar, Alex Dimaiuat plays guitar, Danny Dempsey plays bass and I (Austin Getz) sing.
Where are you from?
Casey and I are from New Orleans, Louisiana. Danny is from Long Beach, New York, Alex and Kyle are both from Virginia Beach.
How did the band come together? How long has it been?
Alex and I had played together before and we knew Kyle mutually. We all had a general idea of the type of music we wanted to play, so we started writing with our old bass player, Mike, and got Casey to play drums. Danny joined up when Mike decided to do other things in summer 2010.
Why should people listen to your band?
That’s a weird question. I guess we all try really hard to write music that other people will really enjoy and feel moved in some way by. It’s fast and energetic and most everyone can relate to what the songs are about.
How have you grown since you started?
We’ve definitely changed our sound and the writing process. The music isn’t as generically structured anymore and the mood is a little darker.
What sets you apart from other bands in the scene?
I think music is kind of over saturated with a lot of people doing the same kind of music for the wrong reasons. I know that we write songs that real and have a lot of heart and we all love playing music for the sake of music, not for a look or a check. Some people think it’s catchy too.
What’s the best part about being in your band?
I love being able to help other people with the music. It’s always awesome to see when someone is really moved by a song that we wrote. It means the world.
More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
Truthfully we all listen to everything. But bands like Crime in Stereo, Brand New, Jawbreaker, and Lifetime as well as bands like Mineral, Texas is the Reason, and Death Cab influence us a lot. The music is fast and powerful but also kind of thoughtful, and mellow.
What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
We’re touring a bunch this summer and in the spring we’re doing a split with our friends in Citizen.
If you could change something about the music industry, what would it be?
How cliquey it is. And how diluted it is.
What is your favorite song to play live?
I like “Solitude.”
What bands that are your contemporaries have you begun playing with or forming a relationship with that you recommend to your fans?
Check out Citizen, True Things, FocusedXMinds, The Story So Far, Ages.
What’s the biggest mistake someone’s made while playing?
We’ve started playing different songs at once a couple times. That sounded awful.
Any pre-performance rituals?
