Balance & Composure were kind enough to sit down in their van and do a very quick interview with PropertyOfZack after their second to last show with Senses Fail and Bayside. The guys and I discussed the tour, their new album, and future touring plans. Enjoy!
For the record, could you state your name and role in Balance & Composure?
Andy: I’m Andy. I play guitar.
Bailey: I’m Bailey. I play drums.
Erik: I’m Erik. I play guitar.
Jon: I’m Jon. I play guitar and sing.
Matt: I’m Matt and I play bass.
The band has been out on the Out With The In Crowd tour alongside Senses Fail, Bayside, and Title Fight for over a month at this point. Tonight you’re playing to your second sold out New York City crowd and tomorrow you finish up in Philly. How has this tour been personally for you guys?
Andy: It’s been the best.
Bailey: So far, I think the best tour we’ve ever done.
Matt: This is the first time we’ve ever done a full US tour and it’s definitely awesome to be able to do it with these three other bands. Everyone’s been really cool.
Jon: Best time of my life.
Erik: Balance & Exposure.
How have the different crowds been responding to your live show?
Jon: Depends on the area, really.
Andy: For the most part, we’ve definitely been selling a lot of CDs and stuff, which is cool.
Erik: Austin, TX was awesome and so was the west coast.
Is it great to be able to kind of travel around with Title Fight and realize that the other two bands you’re travelling with were one day in your spot and you could very well be on your way there in the sense that both Senses Fail and Bayside decided to bring out who they saw as the future of this scene?
Jon: It’s a huge compliment, just them taking us out on tour, period.
Earlier in the year Balance & Composure released a split with Tigers Jaw that included four or five new songs. All these months later, how has the reception been?
Matt: It seems a lot of kids know us from the split more so than our first release, which is cool.
This whole year has really been a great year for not only Balance & Composure, but also some of your better friends in Title Fight, Transit, Man Overboard, Tigers Jaw, The Wonder Years, and more. Is it kind of inspiring to see your whole class of bands all rising up on just two labels?
Jon: Yeah, it’s really cool.
Bailey: It’s cool friendship too.
Erik: I like that all the bands are getting recognized at the same time and we’re all friends with each other, so it’s pretty cool to have that connection and we can talk to each other about what’s going on. We’re all experiencing the same thing at the same time.
I spoke to Chris from No Sleep the other day and he mentioned that you guys will be hitting the studio in January for your first full-length. Is that still the plan?
Matt: Into Salad Days with Brian McTernan to record our full-length LP in January.
Andy: We’re going to be there all of January.
Is the writing process for the record done or are things still being worked out?
Jon: Not totally, we have December to finish.
Andy: We took the whole summer off to kind of write. Then we went on this tour and then we’re coming back and taking December off and we’re going to write and hit the studio in January.
How would you compare the material for this with Only Boundaries and the Tigers Jaw split?
Bailey: More developed. We’re progressing more.
Jon: When we made the EPs we were still trying to find our sound and stuff. We only got Erik in the band a little bit ago, so it’s definitely coming together better and what we really want our stuff to sound like.
Is an early summer release a good possibility?
Matt: Probably before that. Maybe May.
After tomorrow there aren’t any more dates on the books. Could we see some scattered dates for early next year?
Matt: Yeah, I think.
Andy: Definitely stuff in March and then the goal is to be doing something in the spring.
POZ: After that should we just expect constant touring?
Matt: Yeah, constant, constant, constant?
Would you like to get out of the country next year?
Andy: Yeah, there’s talk of going to Europe maybe in the summer.
Matt: Maybe do another full US and then do it.
Erik: When the record comes out, that’s when we plan on doing abroad to whatever countries will have us.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else we should be on the lookout for?
Erik: Just the record. It’s something that we’ve been dedicating almost all of our time to instead of this tour for the past four or five months. Just that. That’s about it.
