“Mr. Owl Ate My Metal Worm” is much more musically diverse than “If You Think This Song Is About You,” the first peek at D.R.U.G.S, which is nothing to worry about at all. Electronics that start the track and can be heard throughout are quickly overwhelmed as Matt Good and Nick Martin’s crushing breakdowns take over the song and never give it back. The pounding verses and hard-hitting drums perfectly ease themselves into Craig Owens’s personal spotlight.

Shining over guitars, drum beats, bass parts, and electronics, Craig Owens’s vocals hit stride as he sings, “I’m so used to being a coward // It’s all I’ve ever been // I quit before I win.” If it hasn’t been made clear yet, it is now evident that the D.R.U.G.S debut will be littered with references to Owens’s troubled past, and opening up may just be the band’s fastest way to success.

The song takes a turn for the worse in the bridge as the music stays strong but the lyrics implode. After one and a half songs of no mishaps, pedestrian lyrics like “I’d like to keep cutting // But I can’t stand to watch myself bleed” have no place coming from a supergroup line-up coupled with all-star producer John Feldmann.

Finishing strong with soaring vocals and an airtight chorus allows both song and listener to recover, and hopefully there won’t be any similar lyrical stoops in the remaining tracks.
