PropertyOfZack has learned that Joe Lacy (Sleepsick, ex-Transit) will be joining Second To Last halfway through the band’s summer tour. Lacy will be a permanent member of the band while continuing to work on Sleepsick. Second To Last will be writing and recording a new album following their summer tour as well with Lacy. Check out a few questions that had Lacy answer following the news and get excited for the future!

You’ve spent the past year or so working on Sleepsick, but you’re now joining Second To Last. How did that come up and was it a difficult decision to make?
Over the past month, me and Tyson from Second To Last have been talking about me touring with them. Originally I was going to play bass for them, but found out they were having similar difficulties that members of my band were having with their parents about being on the road and them worrying we weren’t going to have places to stay etc. One of my favorite parts of being on the road is meeting kids at the shows and talking about everything we have in common and then eventually making friendships whether its the promoter or local bands or just kids at the show and then end up staying with them and watching movies in their basements or partying or just getting a good nights rest. But I guess parents just don’t get that so Sleepsick will be playing shows on the Second To Last tour but probably just acoustic at first but hopefully I can teach Kris the songs on drums and Tyson on bass and jam the songs full band with them. It was only difficult for me till I found a way to work Sleepsick into it as well because that’s my true passion and I write everything but with Second To Last that’s also what they need but to write the songs with Kris and help with the vocals.

What does this mean for Sleepsick? Will you be putting the project to rest, or could you collaborate with Second To Last in terms of splits in the future?
Second To Last plan on doing a split at the end of tour with Sleepsick, kind of like a tour split for a tour we have to come. But you can expect Sleepsick on every Second To Last tour. I have over twelve songs written for a Sleepsick full length, and actually have a new project with my girlfriend called The Weeds with influence from Grown Ups, Balance & Composure and Tegan and Sara. We have about seven songs written for that and I have two songs and tons of riffs already for Second To Last. I’m always writing so this will not affect any of my other projects, if anything it will only help promote The Slug, The Weeds, Sleepsick, and www.casualfridaymag.com.

What will your role in Second To Last be?
My role in Second To Last will be the same role I had in Transit. I will be playing guitar and singing most of the songs with Tyson. I’m really excited to focus more on my guitar playing and helping Second To Last come up with a new direction.

Second To Last has always been a pop-punk/punk rock sounding band, but your writing has more emo undertones in it. Will we be seeing a shift in sound?
Second To Last in my eyes have always had slight undertones of the bands I know they love and grew up on like Hot Rod Circuit and Jimmy Eat World but there sound now definitely fits in with Handguns and The Wonder Years. But the songs I have been writing for Second To Last are definitely more along the lines of Title Fight and Balance & Composure for bands in newer bands and I’d say Hot Rod Circuit and Jimmy Eat World like I said before will definitely have a big influence on the new songs. I’ve been saying to Tyson that I would love to write fast post hardcore songs, I’ve been listening to new Daylight EP which I love and the new Seahaven LP, Winter Forever, basically the same writing process I put into Transit songs and the same bands I took influence from will most likely be the same for Second To Last. That’s the way I write and I love writing fast songs.

How will touring work considering that you’re in Boston and Second To Last are from California?
We are going to work our asses off working over the phone and the internet sending demos. And for tour, I’m going to be on planes trains and buses a lot this year. Hopefully we sell some records and can afford to fly me cross country to make it work. But this tour this summer I meet up with them in Long Island for Today’s Mixtape Festival with The Wonder Years, With The Punches, Such Gold, Iron Chic, and tons of great punk bands. And then the tour ends in the west so I’m gonna spend a couple weeks out in Lodi where they are from and write for their full length that I’m going to write with Kris and Tyson. And Record the tour split and then fly back home. And then just figure it out for the next one and so on, but I honestly think it’ll be worth it. I mesh with Kris and Tyson so well and they’re two of my favorite people in the world and all three of us could smoke an ounce in five minutes so it should be a really fun summer and being in a band with them is a dream come true.

Will you be making a record together and will you be a permanent member of the band?
Yes we plan on doing a split, Sleepsick and Second To Last. And then write for a full length then hopefully will be coming back to California when the shitty weather hits the east coast. And yes I will be a Permanent member.
