PropertyOfZack Interview : : The Dangerous Summer

On 11/8/09 I had the opportunity to interview Cody Payne from The Dangerous Summer on their tour with Straylight Run. He was a really great guy and gave a lot of good info on what to expect in 2010 for The Dangerous Summer. Anyway, check it out!

For the record, could you please state your name and role in the band?
Cody: I’m Cody, and I play guitar in The Dangerous Summer

Six months ago you guys released Reach For The Sun, what bands influenced you to make that?
Cody: Um, probably like Jimmy Eat World, Rise Against, Texan & Sara, Polar Bear Club. A lot of bands like that.

Most of the reception for the record has been really good off the bat from sites like AbsolutePunk
Cody: Yeah, a lot of the reviews have been awesome.

And AbsolutePunk is sponsoring a tour for you guys with Mercy Mercedes right?
Cody: Yeah, we go out on that in like two days actually.
Zack: That should be pretty big for you guys.
Cody: Definitely

Six months to a year ago did you have any idea you guys would be here?
Cody: A year ago we were hardly even a band so [laughs].

And tonight’s the last night of the Straylight tour, how’s John Nolan and everybody?
Cody: It’s one of the coolest tours we’ve been on. We get along with everyone. It’s been cool. The draws have been all right, but it’s been fun.
Zack: Are these some of the biggest shows you’ve played?
Cody: Yeah the East coast shows have been bigger. The West coast shows were a little smaller.
Zack: And at the nd of the year, Mayday Parade..
Cody: Yeah, Mayday, that should be huge. We’re real pumped for that.

Lately we’ve been seeing that there may be pre-production for a new album, what’s up with that?
Cody: When we’re home we’ve been writing, we have a few song ideas. Nothing’s really come together, we don’t have any lyrics or anything. Nothing’s recorded, but we’re just trying to be prepared for when we do do an album.
Zack: Are you planning for one early next year or…?
Cody: Probably late 2010, is when we would really like to release something.

Are there any tours set in stone for next year?
Cody: We plan on being on tour all of early 2010 up until maybe the fall.
Zack: What about the UK?
Cody: Hopefully, if we get an offer we’ll do it, but it’s expensive to go over there. We’re not quite that big yet.

And when you are on tour, what do you usually miss most?
Cody: Just the privacy. Having your own bed, having your own room. The home life.

What’s been the best thing about all these tours this year?
Cody: The fact that they’ve been getting bigger, and we’re on more legitimate ones. We started out on no name tours and no one was going out on any of them. Now it’s the end of the year and we’re with Straylight Run and legitimate bands.

So what do you see in the distant future for The Dangerous Summer?
Cody: Um, hopefully just bigger and bigger tours. Work up to a new album that does well and just keep going I guess. We want to do worldwide stuff and get out of just the USA thing.

And how do you feel about the music industry?
Cody: I think it’s hard to keep up with. Trends are coming and going. No one knows what’s going to come next. You need to stay on top of it.
Zack: Do you truly care about album sales, or is it more about just trying to get as many people to come and see you and get your name out there?
Cody: I mean, I would prefer people would go out and buy it because it keeps the music industry running. And if your label sees that people are buying it and they’ll put more money into you and give you more opportunities rather than just hoping people listen to you.
Zack: Definitely understandable. Well, thank you for your time, have a great show.

A big thank you to Cody for letting me interview him.
