PropertyOfZack Interview : : Lydia

by Zack Zarrillo - Jun 5, 2012

PropertyOfZack had the pleasure of interviewing Leighton Antelman from Lydia a few weeks ago for a great interview. Leighton and I discussed the band’s experience while on tour with The Maine, the reception to their fall 2011 release, the early stages of a new Lydia record, the next step for The Cinema, and fall touring. Read up below!

So we’re a few weeks into the Pioneer Tour now. How has it been so far?
It’s been awesome. I love The Maine dudes. We’re from basically from the same city, so it’s kind of like old friends touring together again.

It is a different tour for you, in terms of the audience. Has it been good to change it up a little bit?
Yeah, it is definitely a different audience. Not in a bad way. We’re used to going on later in the evening with a little more of a drinking crowd. But I always like it when bands sort of step out of their comfort zone. It’s cool. You don’t want to stay in a strict mold. I think a lot of the times, you look out in the crowd and the crowd kind of has the look on their faces where they’re like, “What’s going on here? I’ve never heard this kind of music before.” It’s cool though. We’re getting a good response and everything is cool with it.

So this is your second US tour in response to Paint It Golden. That’s been out since the fall now. Have you been happy with how the album has been doing?
Yeah. For sure. I think it’s got a good response. People are saying that it reminds them a lot of our second record, Illuminate, which seems to be the fan favorite. So I guess I’ll take that as a compliment.

A lot of people were expecting Lydia to be done after Assailants. Are you happy now to have continued with the new album and touring with the same name as well?
Yeah. Me and Craig, the drummer, have always really enjoyed making music together. The only reason I really was going to stop the band is because me and the other guy that started the band together… we just couldn’t get along anymore. So he quit about two days before we went on the farewell tour. So me and Craig did that whole tour together, and by the end we were just like, “This is how tours should have been for the past four years. I’m not sure I want to stop this now. This is really fun.”

A few months ago, we saw that you might be working on a new EP or LP for Lydia. Were you writing or recording?
Yeah we were recording a bit of it. We have probably like less than two songs that are tracked and done at this point. But as I was finishing the two songs, we were thinking about doing an EP, but I had three or four more, so there’s about five songs that are written at this point. So I’m just going to hold off and put them all on one album. We’re trying to have a record out by early next year.
POZ: And you’ll be recording that with Matt Malpass?
Leighton: Yeah.

It was looking like you were trying to put out material closer together than you had been at the beginning of the band’s career. Do you plan on continuing to do that if you can? If the material is there?
Yeah I kind of just like to let stuff come out naturally. So it just kind of happened that a group of songs came out. Because it kind of just comes out naturally. I don’t just sit down like I’m going to write a song right now. It’s just whenever it falls into my lap and I’m like, “Oh this is cool.” We have about five songs so we’re hoping to put one out sooner than later, just because they are there. Then we can continue writing. But after that it could be another two years, you never know.

Were these songs along the same progression that Paint It Golden was? In terms of sound?
Yeah, it’s definitely not a gigantic different genre or anything. It’s kind of the same feel.

After this tour, will you just continue writing for that? To finish out the record?
I honestly write a little better on the road. Just in between green room stuff or when you have down time. There’s a lot of down time on tour. That’s kind of when I write the best. But after this tour… This whole year is going to be a lot of touring. I’ll be on the road. We’ll be over to the UK for the summer. That’s not confirmed yet or anything. And then after that we’re going to be doing a proper headlining tour in the states.
POZ: In the fall probably?
Leighton: Yeah.

Are you doing more writing and recording with The Cinema too?
Yeah. We’re doing more The Cinema songs. We did two more The Cinema songs about a month ago when I was in Atlanta; kind of just bullshitting around. That’s when we made the two Lydia songs as well. And then I actually did a couple of hooks for this rapper from New York City that me and Matt were producing. So it was kind of a bit all over the place.

So will we see those The Cinema songs released as-is? Or are you planning to do more?
To be honest, I’m not sure what we’re doing. The original idea was that they were going to be as like a bonus two tracks on the album we already had, but at this point I can’t really say what we’re going to do with them. They’re just kind of in storage right now. I’m sure they are going to come out somewhat soon. We’re not going to hold on to them.

Fans are still hoping that there will be some sort of tour in that or something. Is that still in the works?
Yeah, that’s still something. In between the UK possible and the headlining tour in the fall, there is a lot of talk with us and our management to do a small run with The Cinema sometime in the summer as well.

So you’ll definitely be busy for the rest of the year?
Yeah kind of. There’s going to be a lot of touring in 2012.

Will that fall headlining tour be in bigger venues? I know you did the first Paint It Golden tourin smaller venues.
I’m not sure what the actual size of the venues will be. I don’t think it’s really booked yet.
