Fireworks have released Bonfires as a perfect way to not only holdover their fans in anticipation for their sophomore LP, but also create even more eager anticipation for its arrival.
Kicking off the EP is one of the band’s best tracks to date: “I Grew Up In Legion Hall” is a perfect example of what Fireworks does best and is equal to, if not better, than a majority of the tracks on All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion. David Mackinder singing, “There’s nothing I’d rather do // Than break fire codes with you“ on “Legion Hall” will surely turn into one of those moments you get lost in during a live show. It might not exactly be a new formula for the band, but there’s something about the track stands out from the band’s past.
Mixing together their fastest and slowest material to date, “Five Years” is a significant change from anything that the band has done in the past. Excellent guitar work from Chris Mojan and Brett Jones under Mackinder’s always impressive vocals create a new atmosphere for the band that was previously untouched. Though the track is just 1:20 long, it will be extremely interesting to see if Fireworks put any slow and more musically technical songs like this on their next full-length.
“Like Ships In The Night” picks the speed of the EP back up, but combines the old sound of Fireworks with the newer flare found on “Five Years.” It is by no means the best work the band has ever done, but the kick drum doesn’t take any breaks and the song only seems to gain momentum as the seconds tick on, making it better at its end than at its start. Bonfires finishes with “Seasick,” a b-side off of All I Have To Offer.
Even though Bonfires was released to tide everyone over, it certainly clears up the direction in which the band will be heading in with their next release. . If Fireworks can better hone the mix of old and new, they will certainly set themselves up for a monster release.
