From the first seconds of “Screaming Bloody Murder,” it is clear that Sum 41 has rid themselves of the sound they released on Underclass Hero, which will excite fans. Many wondered if the band could recover from the large misstep that was their previous album, and it looks like they might be more than back on their feet.
The track can be compared only to the darker and harder material on Chuck as Deryck Whibley’s vocals ring in over a solemn piano part before exploding into a chaotic and somewhat violent verse. Whibley’s vocals sound the best they have in years with a new burst of desperation and necessity that becomes apparent as he sings, “No one can deceive // What it’s meant to be // Bloody murder we will scream.”
The band and Whibley specifically have gone through major ordeals in the last years with label issues, divorce, drinking problems, and back surgeries— the angst and frustration that Sum 41 seemed to misplace is alive and well, and it can only help put the band back on the map. Between harder riffs, faster drums, and more heartfelt vocals, the band is showing snippets of their past that their fans have yet to forget. Screaming Bloody Murder may be the follow up to Chuck everybody was hoping for three years ago. Hopefully it’s not too late.
