PropertyOfZack had the chance to speak with Kevin and Will of The Story So Far just a few weeks back to kick-off the New Year. Kevin, Will, and I discussed the band’s 2010 split, touring plans, a new acoustic split, and their debut LP that will be out in the summer. Read up and enjoy!
For the record, could you state your names and roles in The Story So Far?
Will: My name’s Will, and I play guitar in The Story So Far.
Kevin: I’m Kevin, and I play guitar.
Will: He’s way better than me.
Not too long ago, in late 2010, the band went out on a west coast tour with This Time Next Year. How was that?
Will: It was awesome. It was kind of scary at times, but we had a lot of fun because they’re our homeboys. The shows were cool.
Kevin: It was kind of scary because it was our first time up in the snow, but it was definitely an experience.
Would you say 2010 was a pretty successful year for the band?
Will: Yeah, I thought it was cool.
Tonight I believe you guys are playing a house show, but after that the band will only be playing four more shows before focusing on writing a record. How stoked are you for that weekend run with The American Scene?
Will: Way stoked. Their drummer actually took his van with us when we went out with This Time Next Year, so we’re pretty cool with that guy. Those dudes are awesome. They play some great music and we’re really excited to hit LA again.
POZ: Will you guys be playing a little longer of a set?
Kevin: We don’t have that many songs.
Will: We’re going to play as many as we can. We’re going to have a fill-in drummer, so we’re kind of short notice on the set list thing right now.
In November The Story So Far’s split with Maker was released. How has the reception been for your side of the split to this point?
Will: It’s been awesome from what we’ve noticed. We’ve had a lot of people come up to us and try to buy it. We’re really excited about that thing. The response has been killer.
The tracks on it definitely showed a large jump in both writing and production than previous songs the band has released. Do you see the split as kind of the beginning of the next phase for you guys?
Will: Definitely. Those songs really came together a lot faster than our EP did. We were still in high school during the time of our EP. We had ideas for these songs and we put them together really quick and it happened. With the writing of this new album, it’s kind of going the same way. It’s taken a lot longer since we’re all in different parts of the state. We have two members away at college, but it’s definitely a lot frustrating now to get everyone together. The songs are coming together pretty well so far.
Do you think you’re just a tighter unit now when it comes down to writing songs?
Kevin: I don’t know. I’d say by now we’ve gotten a better dynamic than we used to. We’ve been together longer.
How far along is the writing process for the full-length?
Will: About as far as we’d like it to be. We’ve got maybe six songs in the works right now and there are four more ideas. We’ve got a bunch of ideas; it’s just making them full songs.
How many songs would you like to have on the LP?
Kevin: Ten to eleven.
When would you like to finish the writing process by?
Will: Yeah, we’re writing for acoustic stuff right now to release soon, but we’re going to eventually flip those songs into full-band stuff. It’s just hard to write. Our drummer’s still in high school, so he has all these things to focus on, and then the band. Kevin and I have work. It’s hard to get everyone together and write as a full band.
Is there a set point that you guys have when you want to hit the studio?
Will: We’re thinking March or April.
Kevin: We’re going to start doing pre-production as soon as these songs are done. We want to get this done and out as soon as we can.
Does the band have a producer in mind?
Will: We’re going to go with Sam Pura from Panda Studios. He’s done the last two releases.
Is late summer release possible?
Kevin: Yeah, I think that’s the plan right now. Augustish.
The split was released via Pure Noise Records. Will the LP be as well?
Will: Yes sir.
2010 was a fantastic year for bands that The Story So Far are close with like This Time Next Year, Man Overboard, Transit, etc. Do you see 2011 as the big step for you like those bands had last year?
Will: Yes, once summer hits we will be all over the place. That’s the plan right now.
POZ: So just constant touring?
Will: Yeah, that’s the plan to tour the summer and past that into the fall and winter and keep going.
Are there any other smaller releases we should be expecting?
Will: We’re going to do a little acoustic split with some friends from Boston called Passing. Hopefully that’s going to come out sometime before summer.
POZ: Have those songs been written yet?
Will: We’re actually writing one of them right now. We were before you called. We have one down and we’re going to do two more.
Will we see you guys slowing down in the fall because of school?
Will: We’re not quite sure. Our plan is to probably take a break from school once the fall hits and just do this thing full-time. That’s kind of the mindset we have going on right now.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else that we should be on the lookout for or that you would like to add?
Kevin: Listen to Second To Last.
