Our Lives In Motion began writing their debut E.P, Salvation in Secrets, in the fall of 2009, which brought them to record at The Pilot Studio in Boonton, New Jersey with Producer/Engineer Rob Freeman (Hit the Lights, Cobra Starship, Armor For Sleep). Since then, the band has gone on to play the 2010 Vans Warped Tour and now they are currently working on their next release expected to be out in mid 2011.

How did the band come together? How have you grown since you guys started?
The band started in the Fall of 2009. I was demoing out some song ideas that I was planning on doing for a solo project but I needed a singer to do vocals on them. I then asked Dave if he would consider doing vocals. We then started listening to the songs and really started putting more work into them. We then both went into the studio and recording them. We were really happy with the product that we came out with (Race Against Time, Salvation In Secrets) so we decided to formulate a band around the songs. Basically over the span of the year we found some members, recorded our debut E.P. “Salvation In Secrets” lost a few members and then found the guys who make up our lineup today. It’s been a roller coaster ride but without those hardships I don’t think we would be as tight as we are today.
Since the band has started we have matured some much (musically speaking) We have really learned what it is to write songs for being songs and not so much writing a bunch of parts put together to make a song. We were lucky enough to acquire Jeff Amadei on drums (old drummer from Phone Calls From Home) and he has been an absolute amazement to this band. We have been able to grow as a unit and currently we have been writing the best songs of our careers.
What do you have to offer that other bands don’t? What sets you apart from a lot of the other newer bands out there today?
I feel there are a lot of bands out there today just going with the motions of music and really not trying to step outside the box. I feel like within different genres there is just not enough diversity that is being displayed. With that being said, I wouldn’t say we are completely re-writing the history of music but we are defiantly trying to think outside the box and give listeners a chance to experience something new and fresh in the music scene today. We are really trying to stay true to ourselves and bring rock music back to where it needs to be. I feel for a long time now, Pop and Electronic Hardcore have been really the “in” thing to listen too. We just want to make something fresh.
How is the live show compared to the general sound of material that’s been released?
We try as hard as we can to make our live set to sound as close as the actually CD. I remember being younger and watching an interview that Phil Sneed from Story of the Year was doing and I remember him saying the same thing. How “they really push to make their live performance just like your listening to the record but it being performed in front of you” that really stayed close with me and we really do try to accomplish the same goal.
More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
This is hard because we all listen to so much music and I feel like I seem to pull influences out of almost anything but as a band collectively, I would have to say bands such as Anberlin, The Graduate, Coldplay, Thrice, Jimmy Eat World, Thursday. I can see a lot of influences from those bands bleeding into this new record.
What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
I feel like we have hit some of our goals so far. Play Vans Warped Tour, Be selected as Purevolume’s top unsigned band’s of the year. Trying to hit 10,000 twitter followers (we are at 8,350 keep following :P ) but there are so so many more goals we’d love to hit. Right now, we still are a ways off of being where we want to be but I really do feel that we are on the right track.
Thus far, what’s a favorite memory or something quirky that’s taken place with the band (in-studio, onstage, or elsewhere)?
There’s defiantly a bunch of little things we all will remember our first time being on the road together. Such as toll booth conversations, hair straighteners on the highway, attempting to pay bar tenders with subway sandwich cards, then giving the same card to a homeless guy because in reality that’s all we had. I love all these guys in this band. They really are my brothers and I wouldn’t want to live this dream with anyone else.
Is there anything in particular that you’d like people to take away from listening to your music?
I just hope, like the musicians before me, that I can influence kids in our music and make them want to play music. If it wasn’t for bands like Thrice, Funeral For A Friend, Story of the Year, and Thursday, I would never be in the place I am now. I just can’t wait for the world to be able to listen to our new record because I feel like we have something special in our hands and I hope it hits people the same way music has it all of us.
