When Craig Owens decided to make a fake sex tape to build up attention for D.R.U.G.S’s new song, “Sex Life,” he should have made sure that the song would live up to the hype. Owens had fans interested, angered, and relieved (that it wasn’t real) with the stunt, but when the track was released just a few days later, many were left scratching their heads.
The song begins and ends with a puzzling intro and outro that features Owens’s voice over mild drums and samples, and it may easily be the biggest mistake of the record. It simply does not fit with anything the band has released before, and although the few screams could make this track more radio-friendly, this bizarre bookending destroys that potential. Fans are simply left wondering why.
“Sex Life” picks up the pace in the second verse and chorus as the side of D.R.U.G.S that has previously been shown on two prior tracks shines through with aggravated vocals, edgy guitar parts, and crushing drums by Aaron Stern. Owens sings, “If you had a sex life // A Sex life // Would you even worry about mine?” and while the lyrics certainly are anything but spectacular they do their job.
The bridge features the same lyrics as the intro and outro do, but the vocals are somewhat dialed down and are much more passionate, making the intro forgettable until the song’s ending. “Sex Life” reaches its most awkward moment when Owens’s screams suddenly come to a halt with fade out before poorly transitioning to the same misguided intro.
Unfortunately the excellent verses and choruses in “Sex Life” will be rightfully shadowed by the disastrous intro and outro, which can be blamed on a major production error by John Feldmann.
