How did the band come together? How have you grown since you guys started?
We came together late in 2009. Marshall, Wes, and I (Jared) had been playing with a number of drummers, but nothing really felt like a good fit until we started playing with Jordan. Once we solidified our line-up, we went into the studio with David Pavluk of the Downtown Fiction who produced our first EP, which came out about a year ago. We’ve definitely grown since we started, and it’s very obvious in our music. Our first EP was fun, and we’re very proud of it, but I wrote a lot of those songs while I was still in high school, so you can tell that my mind had a pretty narrow focus at that time. All the songs are pretty much about girls and teenage love, but our new music is a little bit more ambiguous, and will mean something different to each listener.
What do you have to offer that other bands don’t? What sets you apart from a lot of the other newer bands out there today?
I think one of our biggest differences is that we don’t take ourselves too seriously. There are a lot of bands out there that are hell-bent on getting famous, and that sucks all of the fun out of it. Being in a band is one of the most fun opportunities a person can have, and if you don’t stop to enjoy what’s happening, then it loses its original purpose. We’re a band that cares more about entertaining our fans and ourselves than anything else. We’ve always believed that if we aren’t having fun making music, our fans won’t have fun listening to it.
How is the live show compared to the general sound of material that’s been released?
We try to pump as much energy into our live show as humanly possible. I think there is a lot energy in our EP, and even more so in our upcoming release, but a lot of the feeling and emotion is lost in translation. When a person comes to one of our shows, they get to see that we’re putting our hearts into putting on a great show, and we’re having an awesome time. I like to think that the people who come to a show liking our music will leave the show loving our band.
More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you’re making?
It’s funny, because, as a songwriter, I don’t think about what bands are influencing my songwriting during the writing process. It’s not until after a song is done do I go back and think, “Wow, that song sounds a lot like Relient K” or “Man, this song sounds just like Waka Flocka Flame”. In retrospect, though, I can definitely see some of my big influences like Relient K, Taking Back Sunday, and Jimmy Eat World mesh together in some of the songs I write.
What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
We’ve established ourselves as a really fun band full of really fun guys. That was our first goal, and that’s definitely accomplished. When we released our first EP, we didn’t know what to expect, but we were really happy when we woke up the morning of our EP release to find that our EP was in the top 25 of the iTunes Alternative Albums Charts. That was really exciting. Also, we’ve been able to go into the studio with one of our favorite producers, Paul Barber (My Favorite Highway, Steve Moakler), and make the music we’ve been dying to make for a long time. Next, we want to release our new EP (which is coming out on iTunes on March 1st), we want to start touring quite a bit more, and we want to expand our reach to as many people as possible.
Thus far, what’s a favorite memory or something quirky that’s taken place with the band (in-studio, onstage, or elsewhere)?
Our favorite memory will probably always be when we sold out our hometown venue (Jammin Java) for the first time. I think that was the first time we really stepped back and said to ourselves, “Wow, there are people who are really digging our music. All the people in line out there just paid fifteen bucks to come see us play”. We have a lot of memories from being in the studio, as well. We always find ways to get ourselves into trouble after a long day of making music. One of the highlights, though, would definitely be when we convinced Paul Barber to climb onto the roof of his studio with us. Good times with that guy.
Is there anything in particular that you’d like people to take away from listening to your music?
We definitely want people to take away a positive vibe. Making our listeners happy is our biggest goal. If we can make you smile while you’re listening to our music, then our work here is done.
