“Mona Lisa,” the third track and bound-to-be single off of Bayside’s Killing Time, shows a different side of the band than what most fans have seen in the past. The track doesn’t compare to the angst-filled openers of the record; instead, Bayside slows it down to a radio-friendly speed.
Anthony Raneri and Jack O’Shea’s slowed guitars create a calm atmosphere for Raneri’s vocals, but they lack the usual passion that most Bayside songs thrive on. While there is certainly nothing unattractive about the vocals on “Mona Lisa,” it seems quite possible that Raneri’s trademark sound comes across best on the band’s harder and rawer songs, which is exactly what the track is missing.
The chorus is the song’s bright spot as airy “Nah nahs” in the background join nicely with O’Shea’s continuing guitar solo before bringing the song to an end.
