From Jesse and Suzie of The Narrative:

John Mayer “Born and Raised” (Jesse)
I’ve been a John Mayer fan for more than a decade now. He’s an artist that has really taken a definitive direction with his career that’s certainly different than where he started. Some of his albums have needed some time to settle with me, but he’s become one of those artists that I almost feel like I’ve grown up with. I was a huge fan of both Continuum and Battle Studies, so I was a little scared to check this album out. That being said, when I finally got around to it I was really pleased. We all know John Mayer went on this sort of modern Clapton/Blues Pop route, but here he also taps into some folk inspired Neil Young sounds and I just really dig it. Check out the title track.
Jack White “Blunderbuss” (Suzie)
I was never super into the White Stripes, but I randomly checked out this record thanks to good old Spotify. I’m used to skipping around new albums out of boredom and impatience, but before I knew it, I was through the whole record without skipping a beat - entire songs, certain lyrics, instrument parts and particular sounds stuck out to me. I love the energy, how it makes me feel, and that it keeps me entertained over and over. I would recommend “Love Interruption”, it’s one of my favorite tracks.
Fun. “Some Nights” (Jesse)
Obviously a winning album in mainstream land, but that often can make a skeptic out of the avid music listener. I really liked a lot of stuff The Format put out but I had never tried to get into Fun. and decided check this album out because I felt I was ignoring something big that was going on in the music world. I have to admit that it’s a solid pop album with a bunch of incredibly catchy, well crafted songs on it. It’s so hip hop influenced across the board for a band like this that it’s hard to deny the originality at play. For something that hasn’t hit radio yet, check out “All Alright”, or the at-times-Phil-Collins-sounding bonus track, “Out on the Town”.
Metric ” Synthetica” (Suzie)
I am a sucker for Emily Haines, synths, and melodic lightly electronic music so this album is just a big win for me. The melodies are super singable and really pretty. It’s a fun record to listen to when you are driving. I love “Breathing Underwater”. Listening to this album makes me want to write upbeat songs that have curse words in them, but I just don’t think I’m cool enough.
The Shins “Port of Morrow” (Jesse)
Here’s a band I probably should have checked out years ago and just never got around to listening to. I caught a television performance of “It’s Only Life” and decided I better grab this album and see what it’s all about. That turned out to be a great investment as I probably got more spin time out of this album than any other I grabbed this year. This might be a stretch, but there’s this sort of indie-hip Oasis feeling thing happening on a lot of the tracks, and I think it plays out really well. “Simple Song” is one of those tracks you can have on continuous repeat for a drive across the country.
