Post-hardcore veterans, Thursday, have been releasing music for over a decade now, so it is no surprise that their newest album, *No Devolución*, is one of the most anticipated albums of 2011. The album’s first single, “Magnets Caught In A Metal Heart,” is one of the most unusual songs Thursday have ever released.
The song is very melodic in nature, anchored by the Tucker Rale’s kit work as bassist Tim Payne keeps the deep groove. The song builds slowly though the first chorus as vocalist Geoff Rickley’s unique vocals capture the melodious mood with such ease. Then the song explodes as if out of a grave as the chorus hits with Rickley singing, “We’re coupled lines in lightning strikes // We jump like birds on a vine // We’re the magnets caught in a metal heart // Where the blood is pumping through it // When the needle spins, it sings // ‘Feels like we’re in love.’”
The crescendo of sound that accompanies the chorus is berated by the duel guitar of Tom Keeley and Steve Pedulla. Throughout the song there are hints of Andrew Everding’s keyboard, but near the conclusion of the song, after all the “ahh, ahh, ah’s” have diminished back into the grave they sprung from, Everding collapses all the sounds together into a short, but definitely sweet, electronic flare. This is Thursday, circa 2011. This is great.
