PropertyOfZack Interview : : Fireworks

I’m very excited to finally share my exclusive interview with Dave and Kyle of Fireworks. Fireworks is currently out on tour with New Found Glory in support of their 10 year anniversary tour. Read the interview for some hints at what the future may hold for the band! Everyone give a big thanks to the guys who took their time to get interviewed. Enjoy!

1. For the record, could you state your name and role in the band?

Dave: Sure, my names Dave and I sing.

Kyle: I’m Kyle and I play bass in Fireworks.

2. The New Found Glory tour is about half way through, how has it been so far?

Kyle: Amazing, like honestly it’s kind of a dream tour for us with Saves The Day and New Found Glory. We didn’t know what to expect because we’ve never met the Hellogoodbye dudes, but they’ve been incredible as well and they’re an amazing band too so everywhere on the tour as been awesome.

3. You’ve been good friends with NFG for quite a while, but is it a different experience getting the chance to hear their self-titled record from front to back every night, which has shaped the scene tonight?

Dave: Definitely, it has that nostalgic feel to the record. We all listened to it growing up, we’ve heard the songs a million times but they’re amazing every time you watch them.

Kyle: And same goes for Saves The Day, it’s been amazing watching those guys.

4. How was it actually having Chad from NFG producing All I Have To Offer Is My Own Confusion?

Dave: Oh, it sucked. No, it was awesome. Chad brings a lot of cool ideas and he’s a fun guy to work with.

Kyle: It was pretty easy, he wasn’t demanding and he definitely let us have our own opinions.

Dave: I think he understood what we wanted to do, and kind of just worked with us.

Kyle: I think it was just an awesome choice for us to work with him on the record.

5. Since the release, the record has gotten an overwhelmingly positive reception. Is it pretty surreal?

Dave: Yeah, I never really thought we would have a full-length out or even a CD in general at that level, and the fact that it’s out that level and it’s getting positive feedback, I couldn’t be happier.

6. Fireworks is often regarded as one of the “true” pop-punk bands in the scene compared to other slightly more “poppy” pop-punk bands. What are your views on the divide in the scene about pop-punk?

Dave: I think we have always wanted to be sincere with our music. I think that’s a pretty true statement. People make generalizations all the time but from the beginning we’ve always written music with heart. We didn’t want to hide behind some novelty or gimmick or anything like that. That’s not what we’re all about.

Kyle: Our lyrics are about real stuff that we feel that relates to life that maybe other people can relate to and we just see so many bans that are gimmicks and it’s not our thing. We want to do it this way the best we can.

7. You guys are heading out to Australia in mid April, stoked for that?

Dave: Yeah, we’re incredibly stoked. It’s our first time there, obviously, and it’s going to be surreal. We don’t know what to expect and we’re all just really excited to do that.

8. Where are some of your favorite places in the country or world to tour in?

Kyle: In the states, I love going to the bay area in California. South Florida is always awesome, and Boston and Philly are great. And Detroit is obviously our home and the shows there are amazing, we wouldn’t be anywhere without those shows. But Chicago has also become like a second home to us.

Dave: Those would be my favorites.

Kyle: In the world, we have only played Europe and the UK. The UK was incredible, we played all around.

9. What are some of your favorite bands to tour with?

Kyle: Set Your Goals. They’re like our brother band. We toured with this band a bunch called Too Sweet, but they broke up. Those are our homiest.

Dave: This Time Next Year, pretty legit guys.

Kyle: There haven’t been too many bands that we don’t like that we’ve toured with. We’ve been pretty fortunate in that aspect, but I think Set your Goals takes the take, just because we’ve toured with them three times in 2009.

POZ: Yeah, I just saw them here a few weeks ago.

Dave: With Motion City?

POZ: Yeah, that was great.

10. Should we expect to see any new tour announcements soon for after the April tour in Australia or will you guys be taking some well-deserved time off?

Kyle: We’re going to announce a few things soon, so everyone should keep a look out for that.

11. Looking past immediate touring plans, is it too soon to begin thinking about recording a new album or EP, or is that in the works?

Kyle: Not at all.

Dave: I don’t think it’s too soon, I think we’re always working on ideas. I think it’s really important to stay busy and keep the momentum going. So no real plans to release anything, hopefully something this year would be nice. We’re definitely working on stuff.

12. Has any new material floated around the band since the release All I Have To Offer?

Dave: Yes, for sure.

13. It’s almost been a year since the All I Have was released. How would you describe the past year since the release to now?

Dave: It’s been great, dude. It’s been a rollercoaster for the band. Last year, 2009, was I think the most important year for our band. First time we went overseas, first time we really had good support tours for the record and it’s been amazing since it’s been out and we couldn’t be happier with it. Hopefully kids keep coming out and singing along.

14. Well thank you so much for your time; is there anything else you’d like to add?

Kyle: Can I borrow 14 bucks so I can go to the sex museum?

POZ: Is there a sex museum?

Kyle: I think there’s one around the corner. But I’m not about to spend 14 dollars on it.

Dave: I really think if you explain it to everyone in line, everyone will give you a dollar.

Kyle: Yeah, one dollar from 14 people should cover it.

POZ: I’m sure you could get enough for a few of you.

Dave: Just get a quarter from everyone.

POZ: Well, it’s sold out so.

Dave: That’s what? 1,000 people? A quarter each.
