POZ Track-By-Track: Half Hearted Hero - Whatever

Half Hearted Hero’s new album, Whatever, can out a few weeks ago, and PropertyOfZack is happy to be doing a Track-By-Track with fans to take them behind the songs on the album. Check out their writeup below!

Untitled
There’s no real punk beat in this song so we didn’t think anyone would like it. We put it as the first song so the listener could just get it over with. We didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the album. Just skip it and pretend the album starts with the next song.

River
We were really stoked on this song because, musically, we felt like we had written it a few times before. We always like writing material that sounds like all of our other material, that way nobody gets confused. This is probably the worst song on the album.

Vessel
There’s no real punk beat in this song so we didn’t think anyone would like it. The original lyrics about staying true to yourself and your friends and parties didn’t make it past pre-pro. Because of that, we definitely don’t expect any sing-alongs with this one. We put it as the third song so the listener could just get it over with. We didn’t want to interrupt the flow of the album.

Faint Feeling
This one isn’t even a song, it’s here to interrupt the flow of the album.

Framework
This was the last song written for the album, and one of two Half Hearted Hero songs that contains a modulation. This particular modulation was modeled directly after the harmonic breakthroughs made by Palestrina, specifically in the “Credo” of his “Missa Papae Marcelli.” In that piece, we see the composer proceed through the newly-discovered “circle-of-fifths” in a most delicate and artful way, displaying both his brilliance as an organizer of sound and the sheer beauty of the notes themselves. We hope to keep the rich tradition of High Franco-Flemish polyphony alive through our music and manner of dress in hopes that our prospective patrons will find our melodies most sweete and our embellishments appropriate for the period highlighted in tonight’s program!

Good Terms
We liked River so much that we decided to write it again. It’s pretty fast from start to finish, making it pretty easy to decide if it’s good or not. Except for the unlistenably slow ambient string part at the end, we were satisfied that this song sounded almost exactly like every other song we’ve ever written.

Direction
During the writing process of this song we reached out to our friends and fans via the myriad social networking tools available to us. They were instrumental in helping us decide what we really wanted to do with the song, and gave us part-by-part criticism to ensure that we were writing something for the kids. We believe this songwriting innovation was a great success and we plan to use it again in the future when we’ve given up on writing anything original. Probably, when we play it live, no one will care about being at the show and instead they will just tweet about how awkward parents are. There is almost enough punk beat in this song.

*~wUtEvAhh~*
The song with the taste as smooth as its name. At this point anyone still listening to the record is happy that it’s almost over. What a relief. This could have been recorded so much faster and is probably the worst song on the album.

Due to the recent discovery of hazardous chemicals in our processing facility, all fast parts, sing-alongs, and pile-ups had to be removed from the final product.
