PropertyOfZack Interview : : Angels & Airwaves

I am extremely happy posting the PropertyOfZack exclusive interview with Tom DeLonge of Angels & Airwaves. I cannot express the thanks I have to Tom and their management for allowing PropertyOfZack to conduct this interview as it is the biggest interview the site has ever done. In the interview Tom answers questions about both LOVE the album and film as well as questions on AVA’s upcoming tour with Say Anything. Enjoy the read and support LOVE!
1. For the record, could you state your name and role in Angels & Airwaves?
My name is Thomas Delonge and I play guitar and sing in the band Angels & Airwaves.
2. LOVE was released on February 14th. Would you describe it as the album that brings AVA full circle?
Well, I don’t know if it’s coming full circle or more an evolution of where this band is going. We have a pretty clear vision of the type of music we want to make and the kind of band we want to be, so this album was a natural progression for us. And I do think it’s some of the best work we’ve ever done, we put everything we had, musically, emotionally, financially into making this album.
3. The record was released independently via Fuel.TV and Modlife. Is the band happy with the vast amount of download numbers it has received so far?
We’re totally excited to see all of our hard work pay off. People are really responding to the music and that’s what our goal was all along. The download numbers have blown us away. Our total right now is over 500,000 downloads and that means that our core fans were really there for us, but it also means we’re reaching tons of new people that will hopefully turn into fans, which is all that any band can ever ask for.
4. Rumors have been spreading that LOVE, the film, will be released in March; will it primarily be released in select theatres across the country, or should we expect it to be released through Modlife as well?
We will always include Modlife in everything we do – that’s the best way for us to connect with fans. But the film will also be released at some point in theaters – I don’t think March is realistic as we’re still finishing up the film and meeting with different studio distributors that could be our partners. Fans can stay tuned on modlife and the minute we know when and where it’s going to be released, we’ll let everyone know.
5. In just a few years we’ve seen Modlife grow substantially; can you shed any light on the future plans for Modlife?
Modlife is something I’m really passionate about. It’s a way for bands and their fans to connect and create a real community with each other. We’ve got a tremendous amount of interest in the site from all different types of artists, performers, athletes, you name it. This site is definitely set for growth in the next few years. But don’t take my word for it, we encourage everyone to check it out and see what’s in it for them.
6.You guys are heading out on a nation-wide tour with Say Anything soon, making pit stops to headline both Bamboozle Left and Bamboozle New Jersey
We are heading out on tour and starting at the Bamboozle Festival which seems to just keep growing. It’s a huge Festival and we’re excited to kick off our tour there. This band is very ready to play live!
7.Should fans expect to see or hear anything on this tour that’s different from prior tours? How have rehearsals for it gone so far?
Rehearsals are amazing!! We are so stoked! This will be our best tour yet. There is so much good music and we really present it in a theatrical way, so that people are touched and moved by the whole experience.
8.With blink-182 heading over to Europe in the summer and getting set to record an album in the latter part of 2010, what exactly does the future for Angels & Airwaves hold?
It’s still new for me that I’m in two bands and I don’t have it all figured out. All I can tell people is that I will do my best to be true to both bands because I love them both.
9.Thank you so much for your time, and is there anything else you’d like to add?
More than anything I want people to download the album for FREE and listen to it….LOUD. This band has put so much of their lives into making this music that we want people to experience it. Sometimes people assume that a free thing is worthless, but that’s not the case here, we did this because we wanted to drop any barriers to the music and let it be free.
