Can you state your name(s) and role(s) in the band?
Certainly. Young Hollywood is:
Zack Fulton (Vocals)
Matt Alongi (Guitar)
Dillon Hammel (Drums)
Shaughn Adamski (Bass)
Corey Martel (Guitar)
How did the band come together? How have you grown since you guys started?
Most of the guys in Young Hollywood were together in a band previously called To Write A Riot (TWAR). Dillon’s former band, Signal The Escape, was breaking up at the time when TWAR needed a new drummer. We have all been close for years prior to playing together, since we were all in the same local music scene. Once we had a solid member line-up, and locked in dates to record with Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount, we began to write new music and transform into the current lineup as Young Hollywood. Since we started writing new music, changed the name, and basically became a new band over a year ago, we have grown as musicians by playing together every day and becoming a family. Whether you blame it on us all sleeping in the same room down in Atlanta while tracking our EP, or writing in a 10’ by 10’ shed for 6 months straight, we are as close to brothers as you can get. Although even though we are brothers, we still have our share of (minimal) fights!
What do you have to offer that other bands do not? What sets you apart from a lot of the other newer bands out there today?
There are a lot of bands out there, which is why we take that extra step and work as hard as we can. We take the approach of trying to be the hardest working band out there when it comes to connecting with our fans and sharing our music. Whether it be talking with fans on Facebook chat until the early morning hours, or talking to someone via Twitter back and forth, we love every minute of it and make certain that we respond back to every single person who reaches out to us! We see a lot of bands that may not always respond to an @reply on Twitter or answer a fan on Facebook. To us, we see these moments as crucial opportunities to connect with fans, get to know them better, share our music with them and let them into our lives as Young Hollywood. It is sad to see bands overlook the importance of communicating with the people who matter most in their careers. Another thing that we feel really sets us apart from other bands is our love for a vast array artists. The music selection in the van could be anything from The Beatles or Michael Jackson one second, to Bring Me The Horizon or TREOS the next! We pride ourselves on being diverse and trying to develop as many ideas into our song writing as we can.
How is the live show compared to the general sound of material that has been released to date?
We believe that our live performance is even better than our recordings. There are artists that are either great on CD, but rough live, or vice versa. We practice a lot, and use the music that we created in the studio as a starting point. Our performance is full of guitar throws and crowd participation parts that really make the audience feel like a part of the performance. Every time we play a show, our goal is to make the audience remember us as they go home, whether it was our stage performance or talking to us afterwards, we want them to leave as a fan of our music and hopefully return the next time we play in their area. And maybe even bring some friends along as well!
More times than not, influences tend to bleed through. What bands are currently inspiring the music that you are making?
Like we said earlier, we really pride ourselves on listening to all types of music. We write music as a full band, so we get all the influences from each member and what they have been listening to recently. The bands who really have inspired us recently have been The Dangerous Summer, Kings of Leon and Katy Perry! Katy Perry may seem like a bit of a curveball and we will probably catch flack for it, but lets be honest, who does not enjoy a little Katy Perry in their life?
What would you say the band has already accomplished and what do you have your eyes set on next?
We just came out of the studio with Zack Odom and Kenneth Mount, which was a personal accomplishment for all of us as individuals and a band. To record our debut EP with two guys who have produced some great records by bands that we love, is a dream come true. As of right now, we are working on building the fan base around the Northeast and around New York City! We will hopefully be playing this years Bamboozle Festival in New Jersey, as we did last year, as well as a few dates on Warped Tour in the Northeast. In the coming months, our eyes are set on getting on tour full-time and bridging the gap between social networking sites and our fans. We want to really communicate and become close with our fans and make them apart of the success that Young Hollywood can hopefully achieve.
Thus far, what is a favorite memory or something quirky that has taken place with the band (in-studio, onstage, or elsewhere)?
The best moment for us was an off-day we had down in Atlanta when tracking with Zack & Kenneth. ZK’s studio is actually in a suburb of Atlanta, Georgia and is about 20 minutes from the downtown so we had to drive downtown with our van if we wanted to go out and explore. We had just finished tracking drums and went to celebrate at a club called The Uptown Lounge. It was really crowded and packed for a Friday night and we stuck out a little bit with our usual musician garb and tattoos but we were having fun, playing pool, having a couple drinks, and overall enjoying Atlanta. After about two hours, people came out on the stage to perform; it was The Eastside Boys (no Lil’ Jon unfortunately). We basically got lucky if you will, and stumbled upon a rap concert in Atlanta. Now the stage is packed with dancers and the entourage of The Eastside Boys, and Dillon decides it would be funny to join the people on stage and dance too. Soon enough, Shaughn and Matt joined Dillon on stage with The Eastside Boys, dancing and bouncing to the rap songs, Zack and Corey were crying from laughing so hard. That was an awesome memory that we will never forget, not only because we were in Atlanta tracking our EP, dancing on stage at an impromptu rap show, but because we have it on video as well! It may surface for everyone to check out at some point. But that is still to be determined.
Is there anything in particular that you would like people to take away from listening to your music?
The main thing we want people to take away from listening to our music is that these songs are written for everyone of our fans to enjoy and are close to our hearts. We want people to ride around with the windows down with our songs blasting while their singing at the top of their lungs. These songs are written about being in love, having fun with friends, enjoying life and doing what you want, not someone else. We want the fans who listen to our music to enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it and playing it live!
