I Call Fives have been great friends to us here at PropertyOfZack over the past year, so we couldn’t be more glad to be posting our Track-By-Track with the band. The guys were kind enough to write the story behind both of their new songs that were just released on a new split with Rust Belt Lights this past Tuesday. Definitely pick it up if you’ve yet to. Read the details behind “Too Much To Lose” and “For The Best” below!
Too Much To Lose
Sometimes it’s easy to get down on life. School, money, relationships, girls, a band, whatever it is. It’s life..sometime’s shit doesn’t really go the way you want it to and you’ve got to deal with it. This was actually one of the first new songs we wrote (intending for it to be on a full length), so when we got offered to do the split we were stoked to include it. We wrote it over the summer on our tour with Thieves & Villains initially and sort of finished over the course of a few months. “I’ve got too much too lose, I won’t live this down” was just something I thought of when we were driving in the van. For anyone that’s followed the band, we’ve had some member changes and personal stuff over the past nearly 5 years — so I’ve always sort of looked at quitting as something that I’d never live down. I mean, I dropped out of school and went through alot of stuff (same with the other guys) for this band and to be in the situation we’re in now. It feels like if we stopped now I’d always regret it. We’ll never give in for you.
For The Best
This song was an acoustic song originally. I think the two versions sound totally different, but I’m really glad with how the electric version came out. We tried to change the entire feel of the song. Last Spring, we did 4 acoustic tracks where we had people write in asking for advice (it’s a free download over at www.nosleeprecs.com — I Call Fives “Gives Bad Advice) In return, we wrote an acoustic song for them offering our best shot at it. This song came about when someone asked us what to do about their girlfriend, who they found out was cheating on them. Pretty simple..we told the dude to dump her ass. I mean unless she cheated on him with Justin Timberlake or something chances are he probably shouldn’t keep her around. The line that always stuck out to me was “All this time I was just lying to myself, you were such a waste of time.” It’s funny, I feel like often people (and myself at the time) just sort of lie to themselves to make something seem more practical/better than it is. We tend to overlook things in hopes that someone is really better than what they are. In reality, sometimes people aren’t what you think and you’ve simply gotta move on.
