PropertyOfZack had the chance to interview Sierra Kusterbeck of VersaEmerge not too long ago. In the interview, Sierra and and I discussed the band’s current run on the AP Tour with Black Veil Brides and D.R.U.G.S, future touring plans, and their work on a new album. Read up and enjoy!

For the record, could you state your name and role in VersaEmerge?
Sierra Kusterbeck, and I sing in VersaEmerge.

The band is currently out on the AP Tour with Black Veil Brides, D.R.U.G.S, I See Stars, and Conditions. How have the shows been?
The shows have been good. Very eclectic amounts of kids coming out due to the different types of different fans for bands on this tour. Of course it’s fun though; a show is a show. It’s always a blast. We make it a blast.

Many fans believed that you guys were sort of cheated with a lineup spot as you’ve continued to grow. Was there any disappointment on the band’s side with your place on the bill?
Honestly, I could care less. I really don’t give a shit about where we’re put. We’re playing. I never knew that that mattered so much to kids until this tour. They’re like, “I think you should be headlining. Why aren’t you headlining? Why aren’t you direct support? Why aren’t you this?” Like, why does that matter? We’re still playing the damn show. I didn’t see the point in it. There’s definitely nothing negative for it on our side. I’m just stoked that kids want to see us. If they’d just not come to the show because we’re not playing an extra thirty minutes, then that’s kind of a bummer. Some response is better than no response.

What has your set been like for fans that have yet to come out?
It’s definitely energetic and we just keep it going. We don’t have all the time in the world, so we just try to get in your face as soon as possible. We’re trying to grab the attention of an audience that has never heard us, like Black Veil Bride fans and D.R.U.G.S fans. Chiodos fans who are coming to see Craig might have never heard of us before, so our job and my job is to just get up there and play an awesome show. Short and sweet, it’s an attention grabber. It’s not boring.

The lineup for this tour is oddly diverse in terms of Black Veil Brides contrasting what all of the other bands sound like to a large degree. Has that made it an interesting experience in terms of the crowds that come out?
Yeah, that’s why I said it’s pretty eclectic. We definitely have our fans, but then you see all these kids that you would probably never see at a show in a million years decked out in full face paint or whatever. The best part about it is that they’ll be front row the whole show and they don’t expect to like any of the other bands because they’re there for BVB, and I’ll sit there and I’ll watch them, and they’ll have straight faces and not move, but the third song into our set they’re going just as crazy as our fans who came out to see us. It’s a good feeling.

Versa just released a new music video for “Figure It Out.” Was it a fun shoot, and have fans been into it?
It was a fun shoot. It was definitely interesting. We started out in Orlando and we did it all night. To get the concept and to work at night time and just be completely out of your brain because you’re off was a lot of fun. I think a lot of people have picked up on it. A lot of people don’t get it and are like, “What the hell is this. I don’t understand what the hell is going on.” That’s the beauty of it. The song is called “Figure It Out,” and we want to see if you can, but maybe on purpose we don’t want you to because there is no way to figure it out because there’s nothing [Laughs].

This tour will be one of the last for you guys as you wind down from the album cycle of Fixed At Zero. Nearly a year later, has the reception exceeded your expectations?
It definitely met my expectations because I didn’t know what to expect going into this for the first time. I wasn’t expecting anything huge or great, but to see that it actually did go somewhere and didn’t just get buried under everything else kind of helped establish ourselves. Even if people in this scene of music haven’t heard our music, they’ve definitely heard our names somewhere or somehow whether it’s from World Of Jenks or AP Magazine, or anything like that. The word of VersaEmerge is spreading and Fixed At Zero definitely did a lot for us. For this next record, we’re going to have to blow it out of the fucking water.

Information that you guys are already working on a follow-up to Fixed At Zero has made it onto the Internet in one way or another. Can you confirm that?
We are going to be writing this summer and working on a record, and will hopefully have a record out early next year.

Is there a reason that the band is working on things once again so soon, or has it been a normal progression?
It’s been a normal progression. Fixed At Zero, that chapter is closing and we did a headlining tour on it and it was really successful. We’ve kind of done everything that we can as a baby band and I think we just really want to get in there and write something new. We don’t want to stay in there too long and we don’t want to stay on it too short. I think it’s a perfect time.

How much writing has taken place so far?
Definitely have broad ideas. We want to get the general feel of things before we start writing whatever. We’re really keen on capturing a feeling and making sure that we’re on the same page so shit isn’t all over the place. We’ve kind of been gathering our thoughts and just collecting things and seeing what we want to go towards and what I want to write about. Also how we’re going to progress, how it’s going to be different, and how it’s going to be the same. Every little detail, but still let it come as naturally as possible. We have a few things demoed and what not, but no full songs yet.

When would you like to hit the studio to record the record?
In the fall we’re definitely going to be in the studio busting out what we can. We don’t want to take too much time sitting around.

VersaEmerge will be heading out on a month long UK and European tour with Not Advised in May and June. How excited are you for those dates?
I am quite excited actually. We were just over there and it’s great. It was a lot of fun. Just to be in a different country and see the world over there and the way kids see their music. The record just came out over there not too long ago, so it’s almost brand new over there, which is really cool. It’s like we get to do it over again. It’s awesome that we get to headline as well because we were just over they’re supporting and now we get to go back so soon. The tickets have been selling amazingly well. It’s always a comforting feeling.

Should we expect anything different in the set?
It’ll be longer because we’re headlining. Hopefully we get at least forty-five minutes or so.

Obviously the album is going to be what you’re most focused on, but can we expect any other touring before you hit the studio?
I don’t have much information to give you on that, but you never know.

You recently contributed vocals to Anarbor’s Mixtape release. Was that a fun experience?
Oh yeah, that was awesome. When they asked me I was really excited because I absolutely love those guys. I don’t like a lot of bands that are out right now, but I really, really, really like Anarbor. I’m glad they came out on our headliner because it was a blast to have them and to listen to them every night.  When they asked me I was like “Hell yes! Tell me what you want me to do and I’ll do it.” I loved singing it. They have such a soulful sound to them and it was cool to do something a little bit out of the box and to show my voice in a different way. Also because the dude from Envy did the first verse. It was cool to be on the same track.

Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add or that we should be on the lookout for?
Look out for the future because it is coming.
