PropertyOfZack had the chance to interview Nick Martin of Destroy Build Until God Shows not too long ago and we’re glad to finally be posting it. Nick and I discussed the band’s appearance on the AP Tour, the response to their debut album, future touring plans, and more. Read up!
For the record, could you state your name and role in D.R.U.G.S?
My name is Nick Martin, and I play guitar in the band.
The band is currently out headlining the AP Spring Tour. How have the dates been so far?
They’ve been unreal. Everyone went into it with high expectations and I think our expectations have been met and exceeded. Every night has been crazier than the next. It’s been hard to fathom that it could get any better, but it has been. We’re all really stoked. We’ve been getting a little sick, so that’s been shitty, but we pull it together for the time we get to play every night and we kill it.
Some fans of this scene of music in general were sort of ticked off that D.R.U.G.S are co-headlining this bill instead of VersaEmerge because Versa has been around longer and your debut record hasn’t even been out a month yet. Do you think that’s a valid statement?
We went into it knowing we were going to have to co-headline, so it didn’t bother us at all. We still have the same set time if we were just headlining, so there’s no difference for us in that aspect. For me personally, I haven’t seen any sort of backlash or read anything yet. Maybe that’s a good thing.
Have you felt like you’ve had something to prove with this tour?
Most definitely. We have a lot to prove. We definitely didn’t go into this project thinking everything was going to be handed to us and that it was going to be a walk in the park. We wanted to work for it. We know that we have a lot to prove and we’re in a van right now. We could have gotten a bus and done the whole rock star mentality going into shit, but we’re very humble people and we know that it’s a new beginning for us and we’re going to start from the ground up and tear shit up. We know there are a lot of people we need to impress. We’re down for the challenge and let’s fucking do it.
That being said, how have the crowds been reacting to the band every night on stage?
The crowds have been insane. More and more I’m starting to see kids really learning all of the songs. It blows my mind every night seeing the response that we get. For me, I still think of us as a very new band. So to have any fans and have kids sing along every night is a blessing to me.
You guys have all been in established bands, but has your stage presence grown as you’ve continued to play together?
Oh yeah, dude. We were actually talking about that last night. We’re definitely starting to get into this rhythm and this groove. We’re starting to feel each other out. Everyone in the band has massive personalities, especially on stage. Matt Good goes crazy, Adam goes nuts, Craig throws the mic and gets crazy. We’re trying to hone that all in and not hurt each other. I think that’s a big part of this band, the live aspect of it. We try to deliver every night. I think in so many ways that rock n’ roll got safe, so for us, we want to bring it back as much as possible in every aspect that we can with this band. The stage presence has definitely picked up a notch since our previous bands and since our December run. I busted both of my shins open and all of my fingers are cut open.
The record was released on February 22nd. How has the reaction from fans across the board been to this point now?
Pretty crazy. We’re definitely very tapped in to all of our social media networks. We check all of our Facebooks and Twitters and definitely keep in touch. Every day we’re reading up on everything and we’re seeing how stoked kids are. It always makes my jaw drop seeing how fast everything is going. The response has been great. We’re ready to keep on pushing the record.
There was obviously a ton of build-up for the record as the lineup for the band has a super-star cast. Were there nerves about meeting fan’s expectations?
Of course. It’s always a concern in any aspect, but definitely when we were doing all this hype. We were there in the studio recording these songs and we’re like, “Man, we fucking love this. I hope everyone else is going to love it.” We didn’t go into it thinking kids were going to love it, we went into it making sure we loved what we were doing and that hopefully kids would enjoy it as much as we did.
A fake “sex tape” was released about a month before the release to further gather attention and press. Looking back at it, do you think it got the point across that the band was trying to make? There was a fair amount of negative response after you released the statement about it.
Most definitely. For us, we’re trying to explore as many avenues to market the band and to truly get the word out. We want to push the band. We want to do bigger things here and there. It was fun to poke fun at the whole people being obsessed with other people’s lives and personal business. We wanted people to get pissed and we wanted people to have weird reactions to it. That was the whole point. I think it got the point across good enough.
The official music video for “Sex Life” was released just a week or two ago. Was that fun to film, and are fans into it?
That was so much fun. It was weird because we had shot a video in LA previously for “Sex Life,” but we didn’t really like how it turned out, so we said “fuck it, lets just do it in Michigan with all of our friends.” We did it in a basement and had a house party. It came out really well and conveyed the energy of the ban really well. I had a little make out scene. I had no complaints.
After the AP Tour finishes up, you’ll be heading over to the UK in early June for a few shows. Should we expect any more dates to be announced while over there?
It’s just going to be those shows. We’re playing Download, so we wanted to build around that a little bit. We’ll obviously go over there a lot more. I think the reaction over there has been unreal. We definitely want to make sure that our fans keep coming back to see us. I’ll go back as much as I can.
Following that up, D.R.U.G.S will have a spot on the Warped Tour for most of the summer. How stoked are you for that?
Man, we talk about it every day. We’re so excited. For us, we’re all Warped Tour vets. Most of us have done it at least a couple years. I’ve done five Warped Tours and most of the other guys have done three to five as well. We’ve paid our dues and have done it a bunch of times and we’re going to go in this year with a different mindset and just have a bunch of fun. We’re the older guys now. We’re going to party hard, have a lot of fun, get really tan, and enjoy it.
Should we expect anything special in terms of the set?
Our set’s going to be out of control. We have an idea of what we want to change of for Warped Tour. I’m sure it will be out of control. People will get hurt and we’ll have a lot of fun.
The band has also self-confirmed an appearance on the Soundwave Revolution Festival in Australia with The Swellers, Four Year Strong, and Set Your Goals, among other bands. How many dates will that be?
We’re doing the whole entire thing. I don’t know if I’m allowed to say that, but I’m telling you that. We’re doing all of it. We’re pretty excited about it. I think it’s in September.
It’s a while away still, but should we expect some more heavy US touring in the fall?
We’ve started looking into options of doing all of that. We want to hit the US really hard in the fall. We’re going to tour our asses off.
And should we be on the lookout for any other sort of releases scattered throughout the year as a bonus to the record?
I don’t know. We haven’t started talking about releasing more stuff yet, but to me, personally, I started getting back into a writing mode. I’ll probably be recording some ideas when we get home from this and start looking at other recording stuff. As of right now, we’re mainly focused on just getting touring under our belts. Who knows. I’m sure we’ll talk about it at some point this year.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else we should be on the lookout for?
