PropertyOfZack is glad to be posting our brand new interview with Sparks The Rescue. I had the chance to speak with Alex Roy just last week about the band’s new album that is in stores now, recent touring with Sparks The Rescue, a future tour in the summer, and more. Read up and enjoy!

For the record, could you state your name and role in Sparks The Rescue?
My name is Alex Roy. I sing in Sparks The Rescue.

We’re less than a week away from your release of Worst Things I’ve Been Cursed With. Are you guys feeling nerves right about now?
We’re actually just really excited to get it out there. We cannot wait; it comes out May 10th. We actually have been selling it to you on the road, so it’s kind of been out in our eyes for a couple days now. I’m excited to get it out to all the kids that pre-ordered and are getting it on iTunes; we’re stoked.

What exactly does this release represent for the band?
This is our first official Fearless Release. They bought our last record from another label. So this is our first record that we’ve ever made being a touring band and we got to like stay in a house and live in a cottage and shit. It was pretty rad.

Can you discuss the title and whether or not it plays into any sort of theme on the album?
It’s the title track off of the CD. It comes from a line that says, “Loving you is the worst thing I’ve been cursed with.”

What should fans expect compared to Eyes Set To Sun?
It’s definitely a little bit more mature and it’s a little darker. It rocks a bit more too. Lyrically I was coming from a darker place. I wasn’t as happy and I was more depressed.
POZ: Did that create an interesting vibe for how the music behind the lyrics was created as well?
Alex: Yeah, definitely. We all lived in a house together like I said and we’d wake up every day and we’d just write whenever. If it struck you in the middle of the night you’d get up and write. Everyone was such a big part of the writing process. It was cool. Everyone was going through different things. There was lots of wine being drunk and beers being had and things being smoked. We had a good time.

You guys recorded fourteen songs for the record, twelve of which are on the release. Will we see the other two tracks be released in time?
One of the tracks is on the Take Action Compilation through Sub City. The other song was going to be an exclusive iTunes track, but I’m not sure if it still is. I think it might be just one the Japanese and European release. I’m not sure what we’re calling that track.

Not too long ago the band did a Charlie Sheen parody. There was definitely a little backlash on it, but was it pretty well received overall?
It definitely did. It was something we did as a joke. We just had some fun with it. We took it from one of our songs and I had the producer send the track of the song to my house and I had my mom print out a bunch of Charlie Sheen quotes. I literally wrote it in a day and recorded it and sent it out to Fearless and they made the video for it. It was out in like two days. It came together very, very quickly. We were pretty stoked. It was just a joke. People definitely shouldn’t have taken it seriously because I wrote it in fifteen minutes.

Sparks The Rescue just finished up touring with The Dangerous Summer, The Graduate, and The Scenic. Can you discuss the tour?
It was a cool tour. We had a great time with all of the guys on that tour. Unfortunately, The Scenic ended up departing on that tour and kind of left the tour and broke up because they were having internal issues. It was a good tour; we had a blast. We toured with The Dangerous Summer before and The Graduate were really awesome dudes. We played a bunch of random small towns like Bend, Oregon. Shows were either like awesome or we played to five to ten kids, which was still cool.

Were any new songs off of Worst Things I’ve Been Cursed with included in the set?
Yeah, we’re playing three songs. We’re playing a song called “She’s A Bitch And I’m A Fool,” we’re playing a song called “The Weirdest Way,” and we’re playing “Worst Thing I’ve Been Cursed With,” which is the title track.
POZ: Have fans been into them live?
Alex: Yeah, it’s been going great. We’ve been really stoked. All the fans have been singing along and digging the music, so that’s always really cool. You never really know when you put something new out how people are going to receive it, but it’s being received really well. We couldn’t be happier with the way it’s been received.

Two songs have officially been released off of the record to this date. How have fans been into them to your knowledge?
It’s been great. We made a video for “She’s A Bitch And I’m A Fool” and it’s already gotten over 100,000 views. People have been downloading and getting it off iTunes and they’re really stoked on it. It’s really exciting.

One track on the record features the guest vocals of a rapper. Can you discuss how that decision came about and whose vocals they are?
It’s this guy Spose, he’s from Maine. We had always wanted to work with him because he’s a big rapper from Maine and we’re from Maine and it has a small town vibe. We had wanted to work with him and we had had this song, which is very tongue and cheek about this girl who’s the better side of you but she’s doing all these drugs and this fucked up shit, so is she really the better side of you? He just nailed it. He does like the third verse of the rap and he kills it.

Do you think fans will have any trepidations about hearing that song?
No, I think it’s one of the high points on the CD. It’s pretty sick. It’s a funny song and a funny rap. It’s pretty ridiculous.

Sparks The Rescue head out on tour with Go Radio, This Century, and Select Start tomorrow. How stoked are you for the dates?
I’m so excited. We’ve actually never met too many of those guys. I’m stoked to meet Select Start and This Century and just see the whole tour. It’s going to be awesome.

Will you be throwing in a few more songs into the live set?
We’ll probably do seven or eight songs off of the new record. Probably like three or four a night, but we’ll switch them in and out to get comfortable with them. People are still new with them, so we’ll play our three singles and throw in some of the others. We’ll see what kids are really responding to.

Nothing is on the books for after this run in terms of touring. When should we be seeing some more dates?
We’ll be touring all summer. In July and August we’re doing a full US. In June we’re going to try to do some acoustic in-store dates at Best Buy, FYE, etc.

Could you guys headline again sometime soon?
We’re going to try to do a little headliner at some point this summer. It depends on what we’ve got going on. Nothing is confirmed said that I can say.

Is overseas in the planning?
Not right now. We would love to, but we’re focused on the record here. If we have any great opportunities, we’ll for sure go over. Nothing has come about that has panned out yet.

Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add or that we should be on the lookout for?
The record drops May 10th and we’ll be shooting a music video that will be out in June or July.
