PropertyOfZack had a few minutes to catch up with Jordan Witzigreuter of The Ready Set just a week or so ago at The Bamboozle Festival. Jordan and I discussed him playing every day of the three-day festival, reception to his recent releases, new EPs, new albums, and more. Read up and enjoy!
You’re at the second day of your three-day stint at The Bamboozle Festival. How was last night’s show and how excited are you for two more of them?
First day was amazing, crowd was sick. It was awesome seeing how much bigger it got from last year. Today I’m really excited that we play dead-last on a really small stage, so it’ll be a whole different vibe I think. And then tomorrow we open the other main stage, so we get a taste of every sort of end of the spectrum.
Is there a reason you’re on the smaller stage tonight?
It was actually a scheduling thing. We were supposed to be on the main stage all three days, but we had to move the set time because we had a radio thing this morning in Pennsylvania. So we had to go there, come back, and they put on last on this smaller stage. It’s all good.
Before this The Ready Set headlined the Glamour Kills Tour. Can you discuss how those shows went?
That was amazing. First time ever headlining anything, so to be able to play in all of those places headlining and see that it was going really well was amazing us. I was pretty nervous to actually do that, for a while, so it was just a great feeling to go and see that 90% of the shows sell out. It was neat. Definitely one of the best tours I’ve been in.
You’ve come a very long way within the past year. Did that tour kind of solidify everything for you?
It really did. And interestingly, that tour kind of solidified that I’m more driven than I’ve ever been just to keep pushing things.
You just released your new single “Young Forever.” How has fan reaction been to that so far?
It’s been really good. It’s exciting seeing it have as good of a reaction as it has, both at shows and with radio, because it’s definitely a way different feeling than “Love Like Woe,” which is what I wanted to do. I wanted to make sure I put out something way different and not like putting out the same song twice.
POZ: When did you record that?
Jordan: I recorded it actually in October with the Cataracts.
Did you record multiple new tracks while in that session or just that one?
It was actually just that one. I was doing a lot on off days on the tours. What I’ve been doing is flying out to LA a lot and just been recording a new song every Monday. That was just one of those songs that I did.
You recently discussed plans to possible re-release I’m Alive, I’m Dreaming with bonus tracks. Is that still in the works?
Yeah! I think early-to-mid summer is when it’s going to come out. It’s going to have basically the whole album plus bunch of new songs on it, bunch of new stuff I’ve been doing. And after that just a ton of new stuff continuing on—it won’t be the only thing I release this year; it’ll be one of many I think.
How would you compare the tracks on the rerelease to the album in general?
The new tracks are definitely more like the later songs I did for the album. They’re more, I guess—I think I’ve become a much better writer since I began writing for the album, so I think it’s just that I learned how to take the best parts of songs and bring them out more.
POZ: So maybe you’ll release around Warped Tour kickoff?
Jordan: Yeah, that’s the idea. I think that should be when it is.
A new EP for the summer was also discussed. Are you just going to keep on recording songs whenever you can?
Yeah pretty much. On the headliner I was literally in LA every Monday recording these songs so I have a lot of new stuff. Probably like 25-30 new songs, so we’re just waiting to see which ones we want to use and go from there.
Obviously fans love new material, but do you have concerns about oversaturating your writing process, possibly releasing too much music too fast?
Well it depends. I think it depends on how it’s done. I think if you’re putting our multiple EPs or multiple albums a year, that’s probably not good. But if you release, I guess, a single a year and you do some sort of give-away song or b-side kind of thing—if you release in different ways and make it all available in different realms than just iTunes, I think releasing a lot can be cool.
The Ready Set has been confirmed for the whole Warped Tour 2011. How stoked are you?
Very, very stoked. I have never played it before. The last time I went was a while a go—I was a lot younger—so I’m excited to see how it’s changed and to be a part of something like that that’s had such a crazy history.
Are you concerned at all with your music possibly not fitting in with much of the other bands that are playing this year or do you think it’ll be something that sets you apart?
Yeah, I’m pretty sure it’ll set me apart. I’m sure they’ll be whatever things people think but I really don’t care. I think it’ll be fun. It’s whatever.
Pushing past the summer, are you working on any more tours?
Yeah, definitely. I’m going to definitely be touring. Probably directly after Warped, hopefully we get to do some international stuff again. I’m not really sure yet—just a lot of stuff in the works.
And then possibly working on a full-length in the fall?
I definitely hope so. We have enough material right now for a couple full-lengths, so we’ll go from there.
Would you like to release something by the end of the year again?
That’s kind of my hope. We’ll see, we’ll see how it works out with all the labels and stuff, but if I could release something by the winter, I’d definitely like to.
