PropertyOfZack recently did an interview with Colin of Circa Survive to discuss their latest release, Blue Sky Noise. In the interview Colin also reveals some info about a possible European tour and their switch to a major label. Enjoy!
For the record, could you please state your name and role in Circa Survive?
Colin, I play guitar.
Blue Sky Noise came out on April 20th, would you say that it’s the best work you guys have ever done for an album?
It’s the most cliché thing to say ever but yes I think it’s our best work by far.
Did the recording process for this record different from the previous two? How does the writing process usually work?
It was quite different in that we spent much more time crafting the songs beforehand. We had a lot less to change by the time we were in the studio. So we were able to spend more time trying different sonic approaches for the instruments and ultimately came out with a much bigger sounding/dynamic record.
What’s your favorite song on the album, what does it mean to you?
“Get Out” and “I Felt Free” are my favorites right now. “Get out” is just such a bad ass rock n roll song. I’ve wanted to write a song like that forever and I feel like it’s one of the best songs we ever wrote. “I Felt Free” is the first Circa song I ever wrote all the melodies and lyrics for so it naturally means a lot to me for that alone.
Months ago on Twitter the band stated that 16 songs were recorded for the album, but only 12 are being released. Should we expect to see the remaining songs from the Blue Sky Noise sessions to be released at some point in the not too distant future, or will you guys be keeping them to yourselves?
I would expect to see them released.
Circa Survive made the switch from Equal Vision to Atlantic Records not too long ago, what came down to your decision with moving to Atlantic? How is the relationship between you guys so far?
The main reason we took the step to Atlantic was to become more of a worldwide band. Our relationship with EVR is still awesome and Atlantic has been a total pleasure to work with so far. So far so good.
You guys are on a spring tour with Coheed & Cambria, are you excited to be playing with them?
Quite Excited. They are a fantastic band and bunch of guys. We also admire their career and eclectic fanbase so it’s flattering by association alone.
Should we expect to see the announcement of new tour dates for the summer and into the fall anytime soon?
I would think so.
Is there a possibility for any European tour dates within the year?
I would say there is a 99% chance.
Looking past 2010, what would you like to see in the immediate future for Circa Survive?
2010 is the immediate future. The distant future is hard to predict. All I want is 5 happy/healthy guys playing the best music possible to as many people as possible.
Thank you so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Thank you. Infinite Love.
