As always, The Dangerous Summer are one of the nicest bands PropertyOfZack have been able to interview time after time now. Aj was kind enough to answer some questions about the upcoming record and their upcoming nation-wide tour. Check it out!
For the record could you state your name and role in The Dangerous Summer?
I’m Aj, and I sing and play bass in The Dangerous Summer.
You guys literally just got back from your first European tour, how was that?
That was incredible. It was just crazy to be overseas and people singing the same songs we were singing. It’s just unbelievable. It was awesome.
And then you played your first show back last night. It is good to be back here playing?
Yeah, dude, it’s unbelievable. Since we were gone we didn’t lose anything. We picked up exactly where we left off and kids were singing along, it was crazy. We didn’t expect it. We’re pumped to be back home. It’s just so much easier to tour in America. It’s just easier to have our own van and when you drive around it feels good.
Is this a mini-break from demoing and writing, or…
I mean, we’re just kind of demoing/writing the whole time, playing some weekend shows, playing whatever until we’re doing a headliner this summer. Chilling until then basically. Writing, doing demos and what not.
How far along is the writing?
Not too far. We have songs. We definitely have over half the album musically written, but we’re just working on lyrics. I’m working on lyrics. It takes me a long time to write lyrics. I try my best, but we’ll see. This is probably like 1/6th done so far.
Do you guys want to head into the studio at any set point during the year?
Probably this fall. That’d be a really ideal time to head in because we want to release the album early next year, latest spring.
Should we expect similar themes to Reach For The Sun?
I think people will be surprised about the direction we kind of took. I wouldn’t say the word “poppy” with full confidence, but like more indie. Kind of like, our biggest influence was Metric and MGMT and stuff like that. My melodies are just growing as a musician, so I think it’s going to be different. And vocally, like the lyrics, like I’m at a totally different place in my life. So we’ll see where that’s going to take me, I don’t even know yet.
You guys recently recorded a new song for your live EP…
It’s actually not done yet [Laughs].
POZ: The song or the EP?
Aj: The songs not done yet. That’s the only reason why the live EP hasn’t been released yet. We’re working and we’re working just to trying to get the song done and get everything done. But it’s taken longer than we thought, but I think people will be happy. We’re happy with the progress we’ve made. We just recently took a course and we destroyed it. We fucking said, “let’s do it all over again. Let’s rewrite this song and rewrite this song.” Cause after Reach For The Sun we don’t want to fuck up. This is like an album that people really loved and that’s why we’re playing it this summer, because people loved it. And if people don’t love this album then we’re letting them down, so.
POZ: So a summer release for the EP?
Aj: Yeah, definitely this summer and we’re releasing a vinyl this summer. Those two will come out the same time and we’ll have both around the time of our headliner so it should be awesome.
So Cody announced it last night and then you said it tonight [about the headliner]. Was that random?
It was just random. We were like “fuck it.” You know, like who cares. We’re just going to tell people. We locked in probably a month ago that we’re doing the headliner and we’re working on the direct supports and everything else, but I think people will be surprised with who’s coming out with us. It’s going to be a sick lineup and it’s gonna be solid all across America, full US.
POZ: Dates to be released soon?
Aj: Dates to be released very soon. Probably within the next month.
So are you guys gonna just keep working on writing and everything?
Yeah, writing and a few random shows. Keeping fans interested while we’re off doing what we’re doing. It’s just trying to keep people involved while we’re writing cause it’s hard to balance the two.
In the past year you guys have put out a record, toured with Straylight, toured with The Audition, played The Starting Line reunion.
Yeah, crazy shows. We never even thought we’d be there as a band. When we went to the UK it was really a wake up call. Kids like knew the words. We were an inspiration to people over there and it’s just unbelievable. If I was in high school back in the day when I was like some stupid local band I would look at myself now and be like “Damn, you did it. You did what you always intended.” But as it happens I just keep wanting more and more. It’s like a weird balance.
Cool, so anything else you’d like to add?
No, I can’t think of anything except if you haven’t checked out Reach For The Sun yet, check it out and we’ll be out this summer and touring the whole album. Hopefully fans will be out there.
