PropertyOfZack had the chance to do a very brief interview with Chris of Fake Problems on the band’s recent headlining tour in May. Chris and I discussed touring, the band’s 2010 release, upcoming runs with Hellogoodbye and The Swellers, and plans to buckle down and write new material at the end of the year. Evan from Into It. Over It. also sat down for parts of the interview, so enjoy!
The tour is about halfway over for both Fake Problems and Into It. Over It. How have the dates been?
Evan: You’ve been on this tour way longer than I have.
Chris: It’s been pretty fantastic. We started on April 13th and the first three weeks were pretty good. They were in weirded markets on the west coast. Not our strongest places, but since we’ve met up with this guy, the shows are really turning around [Laughs]. We do a lot better on the east coast.
Evan: Is this your first headliner?
Chris: It’s our first headliner for this record. We do headlining shows all the day on support tours.
Evan: Did you do a headliner before this?
Chris: We did for our last album as well, but we had to cancel it.
Evan: It’s interesting for me because I have never quite toured with bands like you guys. I usually tour with like pop-punk or emo bands. It’s interesting for me because I’ve been playing to crowds that I typically wouldn’t be playing to.
You guys have had a bunch of different supporting bands on the different legs. Is there any reason for the particular support?
Chris: We’re just fans of everyone. We’ve basically just been with Pomegranates and Laura because Now, Now dropped off. We were super big fans of Into It. Over It., and Laura, and Pomegranates.
Evan: I was excited when I found out. That was right when we met. They’re awesome so I’ve had a warm welcome.
You’re headlining in support of your 2010 release. Have you guys been happy with it?
Chris: Yeah, it’s been great. I mean, these are small shows, but these are the biggest headline shows we’ve ever had overall. It’s been great to see people at the shows who not only know the new record, but the older stuff too. When the record came out there was a feeling that this record was very different from our last and I guess a lot of people weren’t receptive to it. Now it’s grown on people. I think the people who like it are glad they like it [Laughs].
Have fans been into the new b-side you released?
Chris: It was just one b-side. We always like to promote ourselves, and I figured that not everyone had heard of these other bands, so it was nice to spread the music.
POZ: Are there any more b-sides off the record?
Chris: Well, we probably wrote like 60 songs when we were writing this record. We only recorded the songs that went on it when we recorded the record. We probably have around 30 to 40 usable demo, so we’re still talking about what we should do with them. We might just do another free mixtape. We’re not sure.
Will you guys consider using those demos for full releases?
Chris: I can’t imagine releasing the demos. When we write new records we never go back in time and take an old song and make it sound good. I’m always writing at home. I don’t think any artist is more excited than what we’re doing now.
The band has put out two LP’s in two years. Are you going to try to do something next year?
Chris: No, we’re not going to. I think we’re going to do something in 2012. We’re really going to hammer down at the end of the year as far as writing together and to put together a real concept.
Fake Problems does not have anything on the books yet.
Chris: Not announced, but it’s all pretty much going to be coming together soon. We’re going out with Hellogoodbye in July and then we’re doing a co-headline tour with The Swellers.
POZ: When will that one be?
Chris: We don’t even go home after Hellogoodbye, we just meet up with The Swellers around Michigan. That’ll be a three week tour that’ll end in August. Then I don’t know.
POZ: Will overseas be an option?
Chris: If we were to go overseas in the fall, I would like to know fucking this month. We can make it a lot more worth it that way. It’s hard to get over there because it costs a lot of money. We’ve talked to Gaslight about it and they’re going to take us over there next year. So we might hold out on it.
Does Fake Problems want to stay out on the road as much as you can for the rest of the year?
Chris: Yeah, we have a month off after this tour, but then we’re kicking back into touring. We don’t have anything in the fall planned, but we will.
