The concert industry grossed a record $5.1 billion in North America last year, according to a new analysis from trade publication Pollstar, thanks to near-record prices and a huge number of shows by major acts.
The top 50 world-wide tours generated combined revenue of $3.83 billion, up 27.6% from 2012. Bon Jovi topped the pack with ease, grossing $259 million, while runner-up Beyoncé’s tour brought in $188.6 million.
Taylor Swift took the top tour of North America, grossing $112.7 million and beating Bon Jovi’s $107.3 million in domestic revenue.
The boom is partly due to the fact that artists are playing more dates than ever to make up for declining record sales. Paul McCartney, for example, played 29 shows in 2013, about double the number he played in 2012, while Bon Jovi, Beyoncéand Pink each played more than 100 concerts last year.
