PropertyOfZack stopped by the FriendsOrEnemies Unsigned V.I.P Tour in New York City last Friday to do interviews and Acoustic Sessions with a few of the bands! Below is an interview with Set It Off where the band talks about new singles, a possible new album, and touring plans of the future. Check it out!
For the record, could you state your names and roles in Set It Off?
Austin: Austin Kerr and I play bass in Set It Off.
Zach: I’m Zach and I play guitar in Set It Off.
Cody: Cody, I sing in Set It Off.
Dan: I play guitar and sing in Set It Off.
So the FoE tour is coming to an end, can you guys tell us about the experience?
Cody: I’ll start this off. It’s been absolutely incredible, and that’s an understatement. We first started with just us and Barely Blind and then later down the road we met up with With The Punches. First when you first meet a band on tour it’s kind of awkward cause you don’t know each other, but it just took one hotel party and some drinks while kicking back and having a good time. It’s literally become a big, giant family on this tour. Just seeing the diversity of the bands and seeing how talented they are and playing the shows and having a great time seeing everybody doing what they love.
Were you at all surprised when the offer came together? It’s a cool concept, but it’s different.
Dan: Funny story, do you want to take this one?
Austin: Oh no, you can.
Dan: Alright. So the funny story about this FriendsOrEnemies tour…actually it was collaboration with us, our management, Barely Blind and their management, and FriendsOrEnemies. I think originally Austin came up with the idea and talked to Jorge.
Austin: No, no it was Jorge and he came to me with it and asked me if this was something that we’d be interested in and if it was something that we could book. I did most of the booking of the tour and he then brought in FriendsOrEnemies and they were down. They wanted to bring in Barely Blind and just start making the magic happen.
After this you guys are heading out on tour with Patent Pending…
Cody: Yeah, and Score 24 in July. It starts on July 7th…? No, 6th. Then we’re out for 20 days and it’s gonna be a freaking blast.
Dan: It’s kind of nice that we only have a week off cause usually when we have an extended amount of time off we get lazy and get out of that tour mode. But we don’t really have time for that this time.
Cody: Sleeping in your own bed in kind of relaxing.
Austin: We’re also really stoked to just tour with these bands because we’ve already met them. The guy in Score 24 has set up all of our Long Island shows, so I know him personally. And we had a chance to chill with the guys from Patent Pending and they’re just awesome.
Cody: They’re so cool. I love those guys.
Before this tour started out you guys were in the studio doing demos with Dave from ex-Cute Is What We Aim For, current Nocturnal Me. Will he be doing any production whenever you guys want to record?
Cody: The way this was is actually a straight up recording. We had demos recorded on our laptops for the songs that we wanted to work with. But we worked with Dave and he co-wrote a couple and did straight up producing on other songs. We had a blast with him and then we went into the studio with Mike up in Buffalo and we’re going to be releasing the songs momentarily. We’re very, very excited about it.
Austin: We recorded singles, not demos.
POZ: So it won’t be an EP?
Austin: Not yet. We’re going to release some and see how the different ones do and end up picking those and others to put together for something.
Cody: We’re currently in the process of changing our sound all together.
Dan: We’re going to judge off of reaction.
POZ: What should we see in that change?
Cody: Basically, if you were to take the sound we have now and darken it up literally, instrumentally and add orchestral instruments into it with a more poppy feel. It’s kind of hard to explain, which I’m pretty stoked about that I just can’t say, “Oh, it’s like this band. Or it’s like this.” It’s not experimental. Anyone can take something from this.
Austin: And from anyone who hears it and we get different impressions. It tells that we have something really unique.
How did you guys get hooked up with Dave?
Cody: Oh, we actually played a show with him. Jorge knew him for a while, our manger, and he knew Dave and we actually got a show together with him and he liked our live set and we liked his live set. We kind of just hit it off and chilled for a bit. Then we found out that he actually does do production and have his own studio, so it seemed like it was perfect. We had chemistry with him, writing would be a lot easier, and it felt right, so we went with our gut.
How much stuff do you guys actually have written for a future album?
Full Band: [Laughs]
Cody: Current songs…
Zach: We have about 16 right now, don’t we?
Cody: Yeah, something like that. But we just wanted to get four good ones that were very diverse. We wanted four diverse, but new in that direction of sound.
Austin: But all of them able to be singles so we could release them as such.
Do you guys want to hit the studio after the summer or…?
Zach: We don’t necessarily know when we’re going to head back into the studio, but we’re looking to record all the songs we have now. We’re just waiting to go back in after we release the new tracks. So we have no big plan to go back in.
Austin: Yeah, we’re kind of basically doing the whole NeverShoutNever!/Weezy type of thing where we’re just releasing music. Releasing song after song.
Cody: It keeps it interesting because we have had our CD out for a little while now, just time and money being a poor struggling band. We want people to hear out new stuff. We want to get the reaction, so that’s basically what we’re focusing on.
So should we see tour dates after the Patent Pending tour being announced?
Austin: Probably towards the end of that we’ll be releasing on a really, really big tour. I can’t talk much about it right now, but it’s something that not a lot of unsigned bands do, so.
Being that you are unsigned, has there been any talk when you want to settle down and do the album to start talking to labels?
Cody: Yeah, that I think is also kind of the idea with these four other songs. Since we had the diverse sound there we can hand it over to them and be like, “Yo, what do you think of this?” And kind of go back and fourth with it. To be honest, we’re not in any rush to go and just get a label because we see a lot of bands getting signed now and it’s kind of scary a bit. I don’t want to get too far into that because I might get to sensitive subjects, but what we’re looking for is basically the right offer that will treat us like a family and push us just as much as the biggest act they have.
Austin: With what we’re doing, we’re good right now. Set It Off is a very self-sustainable and good at what we’re doing, but we’ll continue to do that and when the label comes along, awesome. But if it doesn’t, we’re good on our own not being dependent on anything.
Thanks for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Cody: As cliché as it is, thank you to everyone who spreads the word. Please continue to do so and please add us on twitter @setitoff, Myspace.com/setitoff, Facebook.com/setitoffband…
Austin: Check out our Youtube, siomobile. Subscribe! On tour we had this YouTube channel where we take like one-minute clips of things we do on tour and it’s really fun.
Dan: They shoved cheese in my mouth while sleeping today.
Cody: Yeah, we did that today. It’s on video. Check it out.
