PropertyOfZack was lucky enough to interview Ace Enders (I Can Make A Mess Like Nobody’s Business) as the Warped Tour rolled in to Long Island on July 17th. Ace and I discuss Warped, a new EP, a new album, and his upcoming movie. Give it a read!
You’ve been on every date of the Warped Tour so far and will be going to the finish line as well. Can you tell us about your time off and on the stage so far?
Well, it’s a crazy tour. It’s probably like the most hectic tour, but it’s probably like the most fu environment. It’s pretty much: Wake up, when you get here, 8:30. Unload all your stuff, set up merch, do stuff like that. Then find out when you play, get lunch, play. And then the rest of the day you can imagine, a lot of going crazy and what not.
Do you have your family out here?
Yes, they’re actually inside right now.
POZ: Is that hectic at all, especially on this tour?
Ace: It’s great. They haven’t been at every show, but they’ve been at a bunch. The little man is doing great. He’s just killing it everyday.
You have a bunch of material to pick and choose from. Have you just been playing I Can Make A Mess material or a Million Different People material as well?
I’ve been playing all sorts of mixes. Some I Can Make A Mess. Some old, some new. Some old throwback songs.
The World We Know was released in late March. Have you been happy with the reception it’s gotten?
Yeah, it’s been great. I think I’m definitely ready to do the next one. I’m very happy with how this one is going over.
Have fans been receiving it well on stage?
Yeah, it’s been good. I’m very excited.
POZ: I think a lot of people are definitely intrigued with the whole three-part series.
When we last spoke you were in the process of coming back from the Copeland tour and said you were going to begin the second piece the three part series. Can you give us an update on that?
Well, unfortunately when I got home my studio was flooded and I had to rebuild everything and do all that. So that basically took up all my time when I got back. But as soon as we get back from this we’re hitting it hard.
Have you written all the material yet?
No I’ve been writing as we’ve been going.
POZ: Is that gonna be another full-length as well?
Ace: I’m gonna do an EP in the fall, for the fall tour, cause I’m doing a tour in the fall. And the EP’s gonna lead up to the next record that comes out, I would say in November/December. So, in the fall we’ll have two releases.
POZ: Is that all self-produced as well?
Ace: Yes.
How was the writing process different from The World We Know?
I think this has been a little bit more laid back and I’ve had a little bit more time to write and time to write and really focus on what we’re going for now. And I think it’s been, if anything right now, just a lot more time to be able to think about what we’re gonna do. Last time was very rushed, so.
Will the two definitely have a different identity?
Yeah, they definitely will for sure.
POZ: Will they fit together in an overall kind of sense?
Ace: In an overall, yeah. When the last one’s done and we do the film portion of it it’ll all come together and make sense.
You also mentioned when we last spoke that the third part of this process will be a video/movie portion. Is that still planned to be released in 2010?
It’s probably gonna be more like early 2011, sometime.
POZ: Will that just be more of a documentary?
Ace: No, it’s gonna be like a real movie.
So you just did mention a fall tour. When might we see dates?
I would hope in the next few weeks.
POZ: Will you be headlining?
Ace: No, it’s not headlining. It’s a support tour, but I’m very excited about it though.
The World We Know was your first independent release. Are you looking to stay independent or has there been any label talk?
You know, I thought about it for a minute and I think I’m gonna stick to doing what we’re doing. I really like the whole independent thing and having control over everything. I’m a controlling person, so it works out.
So you’re going to release an EP in the fall and another record. Should we just keep seeing touring throughout the year?
Yeah, we’ll be consistently going. We’re gonna take Christmas off though, but other than that.
POZ: New Years too, I’d hope.
Ace: Nah, well, probably.
You’ve obviously experienced a lot of different things starting with The Early November and now doing this. You said you’ve grown a lot and have become more of a focused person. Where would you say you are now?
Everyday I just keep getting more and more, you know? Everyday I feel like I learn more and I get to a better place. I mean, if things keep going like they are I feel like every tour I learn something new, just not about myself, but about my music and my life in general and where I am. I feel like I just everyday learn something more.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
I just want to thank everyone who’s been supporting just as long as they have. It really means the world to me.
