PropertyOfZack had the chance to do a brief interview with Rachel and Trevor from He Is We when they came into tour on their headlining tour a few weeks ago. Rachel, Trevor, and I discussed the band’s headliner, how they’ve grown within the past few months, demoing new songs, and more. Read up and enjoy!

The band is currently out on a headliner with Ocean Grove and Andrew Allen. How has it been headlining?
Rachel: It’s been awesome.
Trevor: Magical. We’re a little over halfway now.
Rachel: Yeah, and we’re getting along with everyone, which is the best thing about it. The best part about headlining is that you get to choose bands that you’re a fan of and that you believe in. We got very, very lucky with the group that we chose.

Were there nerves considering this is your first headliner?
Trevor: There’s a sense of responsibility to put on a great show because you’re the reason most of the kids are coming out. We try to keep the energy up and reorganize our set to make it more fun and interactive.
Rachel: There’s a little more pressure because everyone’s depending on you. If there’s not a good crowd it sort of falls back on us. It’s also an awesome opportunity to prove ourselves.
Trevor: I think tonight’s sold out.

The record has only been out for eight or so months now. How are the songs going over live?
Rachel: Honestly, we don’t look at the numbers of CD sales, but from the reaction and hearing the kids sing with us, it’s a huge…
Trevor: You know you have some sort of success when you have friends you haven’t heard from in eight years that are like, “Oh my god, I heard you’re song.” And I’m not, “I haven’t heard from you in ten years, and now you’re hitting me up?”
Rachel: We can see that the record is moving and it’s such a humbling and moving experience.
Trevor: We don’t pay attention to numbers, but we see it in YouTube videos.

Have you noticed a steady increase in fans that are coming out to the shows over the last couple tours?
Rachel: I would Denver was our biggest shocker.
Trevor: We were in some of these markets two and a half months ago and it’s seems like it’s doubled in size. I don’t know if that’s from radio or what. It’s so unreal because we don’t go into it with any expectations, so when you see growth like that it’s unreal.
Rachel: Last time we were in Denver we had 20 kids that were stoked on everything, and then this last time it was incredible.

Would you say your stage presence is only increasing every night as you get the chance to play the newer material repeatedly?
Rachel: We’re a lot more comfortable.
Trevor: We only hope for gradual progression, but it’s a matter of being comfortable. We just got a new electric guitar player who’s killing it.
Rachel: We feel like a family in the band and we’re having fun. I think that’s the biggest difference of this tour; all of us are on the same page.
Trevor: If we mess up we laugh about it. It’s like not like, “Oh my god, you messed up.” It’s more like, “You’re such an idiot! You made yourself look so dumb [Laughs].”

How has it been working with Universal for the release?
Rachel: We got to meet with the guys at Republic today, and I don’t know about Trevor, but I’m super excited and optimistic. I feel like this team is really understanding of our vision and goal. That’s rare to hear for bands and their label. I feel like we have a good relationship with everyone.

A music video for “Happily Ever After” was recently released in March. Are there plans to do another any time soon?
Rachel: Yes, you will. Hopefully within the next few months or so.

He Is We released an acoustic EP via Purevolume in February. Was that to just sort of give back to that platform?
Trevor: It was a mixture of that and then a matter of some of our fans missing our acoustic roots. So we wanted to give them something special too.

What about pushing past this tour? Have any possibly dates been discussed for later in the summer or early-fall?
Rachel: I think we’re just looking at tours and figuring out whether or not we want to do another headliner or if we want to do direct support on a bigger tour. I think we’re weighing our options because we don’t want to jump into anything. We’re going to be doing something in the fall. I’m taking some time off because I’m getting married in September. I don’t know if we’re doing anything in December, but we’ll probably take advantage of November.

Obviously the record just came out, but have you guys been tinkering around with any new ideas, musically speaking?
Rachel: Oh yeah, we’re always writing.
Trevor: There’s not really a set writing schedule, but Rachel will be sleeping and will wake up with a song idea. Nothing solidified yet.

Would you like to possibly even track some new songs this year?
Rachel: Yeah, we’d like to demo some stuff out and test it out.
Trevor: It’s a matter of time and money. We’re trying to get our priorities straight right night.
Rachel: We’d like to demo some songs and test them with the fans acoustically and see the response. We’ll take it from there.
