PropertyOfZack was given the chance to interview Jimmie and Matt from Every Avenue when the boys came into town on the Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour. Jimmie, Matt, and I discuss their current tour, the Fearless Tour, as well as their plans to begin recording their next record sometime early next year. Be sure to check it out!
For the record, could you state your names and roles in Every Avenue?
Matt: My name is Matt and I play bass.
Jimmie: My name is Jimmie and I play guitar.
There’s a few more dates on the Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour. How has it been so far?
Matt: It’s been awesome. Probably one of my favorite tours. It’s probably been our most hectic tour, but it’s been a really good tour.
Jimmie: Yeah, it’s been a good tour. It’s been a lot of fun.
Is it always nice to be able to headline?
Matt: Yeah, it’s stressful, but it’s fun. There were a couple places that we played on this tour that we had played on this tour that I had always hated the stage. I was like “Ah, I don’t want to play that place because the stage is so small,” but then I realized it was only that small because we were playing first. So when we get to headline some of these stages I’ve been like, “Oh, this is why everybody likes playing here.” It’s been really cool.
For people who don’t know, can you discuss what exactly the tour is, could you talk about what exactly Motel 6’s part in the tour is?
Matt: Motel 6 has given all of the bands two free rooms every night. So they’ve pretty much saved everyone from having to sleep on floors.
Jimmie: They’ve saved everybody a lot of money.
How have the fans been receiving you guys?
Matt: It’s been great. I don’t think we’ve had like a really awkward crowd yet, which I’m pretty stoked about. There were some towns that we didn’t really know what the reception would be, but it’s been awesome.
Later in September you guys are heading out to Japan with We The Kings. How stoked are you guys for that?
Matt: It’s gonna be a good time.
Jimmie: It’s funny, those dudes and us have slowly been becoming friends the more that we’ve…We keep running into them on tours, but we’ve never toured with them. Except for like Warped Tour and stuff like that, but if they’re in town we’ll go see a friend’s band play and then they’re there because they’re on that tour or vice versa. So we run into each other a lot. It’s gonna be a lot of fun.
Is it fun getting out to new and previously unperformed crowds before?
Jimmie: Japan’s awesome, we love it.
Is there a chance the band will be releasing a new single off of Picture Perfect for it or the Fearless Tour?
Matt: We hopefully have something in the works. We really don’t know when things will actually be released, but it’ll probably be right around then.
POZ: Is there a possibility for a music video?
Jimmie: Yes.
Now that Picture Perfect has been out around 7 months how would you say the reception has been?
Matt: From what I’ve seen, it’s selling quicker than the first one.
Jimmie: Yeah, it’s about caught up with the first one. And the first one came out about a year before it, so.
Matt: People seem to really be enjoying it. We’ve had a lot of people tell us that it’s their favorite record we’ve released.
The Fearless Tour has been announced with Every Avenue, Mayday Parade, Breath Carolina, Artist Vs Poet, and Go Radio. Is it definitely gonna be fun to head out with some labelmates?
Matt: Oh yeah. We’ve done two or three tours, if you count Warped Tour, with Mayday Parade. We’ve toured a lot with Breathe Carolina as well, so those guys are like best friends of ours. So we’re definitely stoked. There won’t be any weird period where you don’t know any of the people on tour. It’s just going to be right away.
Jimmie: A lot of times when you’re on tour you’re like, “Oh, why didn’t we talk sooner?”
Matt: With the Artist Vs. Poet guys, we’ve partied with them a bunch, but we’ve never actually gotten a chance to do anything with them.
Jimmie: I’m really excited to see Go Radio play too.
POZ: The crowd should be pretty great too.
Jimmie: Yeah, I think it’s gonna be an awesome tour
Do you know when we’ll be seeing an announcement and dates for that?
Matt: We’re actually still waiting as well. So probably pretty soon after we know we’ll be starting to promote it.
Jimmie: Probably August. Probably late August.
POZ: Do you guys know what months the tour will be?
Jimmie: October and November.
Do you guys have any more plans to do any more touring by the end of this year or the beginning of next year?
Matt: Not really. Not after that. Things are still kind of up in the air.
Is it too early to start thinking about the studio?
Jimmie: Nope.
Matt: No, that’s one of the things that is being considered right now that we might be doing probably early next year.
POZ: Do you guys have stuff written for it already?
Jimmie: A lot of just thinking and ideas and speculating more so than things ready to go.
Matt: We have a lot of ideas, but a lot of really rough ideas that are being fleshed out.
Jimmie: We’re really trying to head in a straightforward path rather than the last record that we were kind of rushed into. We’re still super stoked on how it came out, but it was really hectic. We didn’t necessarily love the way that it was done, so we would really like to change those things.
So you guys would definitely like to hit the studio early next year and have an album out hopefully by the end of next year?
Matt: We’ve talked about maybe as soon as the summer, but…
Jimmie: It usually doesn’t end up that way.
Matt: I feel like summer releases our great. And I feel like our records would be good for a summer release.
Jimmie: It would be awesome.
Matt: But we always get February and November.
Jimmie: Every date that we aim for it happens like five, six months later.
So for the immediate future: Fearless Tour, time off, studio, and then just touring after you guys write and record?
Matt: Oh yeah.
Jimmie: We go to Soundwave in Australia.
Matt: Can we announce that?
Jimmie: I think so? It’s gonna be announced eventually, so blame it on me.
Will we see any other international touring when you head out there?
Jimmie: We don’t know yet. Hopefully we’ll go back to the UK sometime. We just got back from there a month ago.
Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
Jimmie: Just come see us out on tour. Check out our record, it would be awesome.
