PropertyOfZack had the great pleasure of sitting down with MC Lars and Weerd Science at this past Warped Tour for a great interview. Emily, Lars, and Josh discussed how playing together on Warped Tour had been, Sick Kids, Lars’s new record, a collab and a children’s record, and a whole bunch more. Read up and enjoy!
You’re doing your set with MC Lars. How has that been?
Weerd Science: It’s been great. You know, really a huge opportunity for me. You know Lars signed me to Horris Records and to get to play for his fans, which there are a lot of, is a huge opportunity and one that I’ll never forget. This is my first American tour and I just couldn’t be luckier. I’m excited to represent Horris records and do what we do, it’s been awesome.
Are you doing a fair mix of each other’s songs up there?
Weerd Science: We back each other up one the songs. There’s a lot of Lars fan’s here. For every 5 Weerd Science fans there’s 50-100 MC Lars fans so we do 2 of my songs, but then I back Lars up and sing some choruses for his songs. We do some songs we’ve done together and we do a nice mix. We try to bring a lot of energy to the set and hit a lot of MC Lars songs that hopefully people want to hear.
And for you Lars, being an artist like yourself on Warped Tour you’re definitely different in the mix. What’s that like for you to have this unique flair?
MC Lars: You know we call ourselves the outcasts amongst the outcasts. We’re rappers but we’re not like mainstream indie rapper style or we aren’t signed to Eminem’s label, we just do what we do because we believe in it. I think it works to our benefit rather our detriment that we’re different and we’re smart and that we have a live band and the rock element. It’s cool; I feel like if we were doing a more typical thing we would blend in more. So it’s really awesome being different.
Before Warped you guys headed over to the UK and Mainland Europe. Can you talk about those dates?
MC Lars: We were out for 3 weeks and we booked it to get ready for Warped and to promote the Weerd Science album Sick Kids. I had been over there a bunch of times and it was by far the most fun I’ve had over there. It was a really good introduction of what it’s like on the road together. It was incredible and all the shows were great. It ended with Slam Dunk Fest and people went absolutely nuts over there. It was perfect and got us ready for Warped and we are looking forward to getting back over there sometime.
How was the reaction to Sick Kids in Europe and how has it been here at Warped?
Weerd Science: It’s been good. I put out a record in 2005 on Equal Vision called Friends and Nervous Breakdowns and things went pretty well with that record. We never really toured on it but the it was like the 5th most played video on MTVU and some things happened and it was a long time in between records. Sick Kids is a much different record from the first one but yesterday I met a guy who told me that that record is what helped him stay clean off of drugs and that was the ultimate record. The reception has been great. It’s a record that’s deeply personal and if it touches peoples hearts then my job is done. I’m a creative soul and when I do something that is so personal and that I believe in so deeply, when it touches someone else it validates it for me and makes me really happy.
Is there anyone else you’re thinking of signing to Horris Records?
MC Lars: There’s a lot of talented people. I think the plan right now is to get Josh in a position where he can do it full time, maybe in 5 years. But right now it’s very expensive and I have to really like what the person is doing. So no plans, I’d rather put out my music and Weerd Science’s music than look for other artists.
You guys are supposed to be doing a small club tour together? Is that still in the works?
Weerd Science: Well, right after Warped I’m going to China and then Australia with Terrible Things. Lars is going out with MC Chris for 2 months.
You’ve also said that you want to do work on a collab album with Josh as well as a kid’s album. What is the status on both of those?
MC Lars: After Warped I can’t wait to do both. It’s going to be awesome and it’s going to happen. We’re going to make the time to get in the studio and make a record together.
Have you done any writing together yet?
Weerd Science: Yeah we’ve done a couple songs. We’ve got two songs one called “Industry 187” and another called “How To Be An Indie Rapper” which are on the mix tape. Right from the get go when we first met the first thing we did was a song together and it was a really good kind of introduction to each other. I had heard Lars’s music and he has heard mine, but it was a good introduction for us as people and I think it’s only going to evolve more. It was awesome and I love the song “Industry 187”. I just can’t wait to make a record together. We get each other. We live on a bus and a van with each other, we hit the stage together and it’s really special to me and I know we’ll be able to carry that energy to the studio and make a really great record. My goal is to make the best record we’ve ever been a part of together.
Do you have any goal for the release date of a Kids album?
MC Lars: My whole plan is to eventually have a hip hop Kids show like Yo Gabba Gabba and do it like I’m a host. That’s my goal, where I want to take MC Lars. So the Kids album is kind of like the introduction for that and I’m hoping to get all that rolling next year.
Do you still have plans to be in Australia in December?
MC Lars: We’re trying to go back in November to do a support tour so that we’ll be awesome. Everything is piecing together after Warped Tour. We’re going to be doing a lot and there is a lot coming up.
Do you have any plans to write for The Illogy? How has that process been?
Weerd Science: Good, I love writing. I have my stuff for the new Terrible Things record, I didn’t really write much for the first Terrible Things record. It’s at it’s earliest infant stage it’s just writing on paper and lots of guitar ideas. We haven’t started recording, it’s a long process. I literally brought a notebook with me and I’ve written one night in my bunk for an hour, there’s just not time at Warped Tour. All this stuff is going to happen from The Illogy to the Choose Your Own Adventure to the Lars/Weerd Science record, it’s all going to be happening. It’s going to be a really busy year. A really creative year.
Thanks, that’s all I have. Is there anything you guys would like to add?
MC Lars: Just weerdscience.net and mclars.com are the websites respectively and we’re going to be doing a lot so hopefully you guys can check it out.
