PropertyOfZack sat down with Daniel and Chris from The Devil Wears Prada about a month or so ago at Warped Tour for a brief interview. Daniel, Chris, and I discussed how Warped treated the band, their new album, Dead Throne, the recording process for it, and the future. Read up and enjoy!

For the record, state your name and role in The Devil Wears Prada?
Daniel: I’m Daniel, and I play drums.
Chris: I’m Chris, and I play guitar.

The band has been on Warped for a month or so now, how have the dates been?
Chris: It’s been awesome. For the past week or so it’s been extremely, extremely hot. Those have been some of the best shows though. There have been super big crowds and the crowds are always responsive and cool. It’s been awesome. We couldn’t really ask for much more. Warped is Warped because it’s consistent. That’s what I like about it.
Daniel: A couple crazy things happened this week though. We played in the amphitheater because our stage got rained out halfway through the day. We were the only band that got moved. It’s nice to know that everyday on Warped we’re going to go out and play to a nice crowd.

Before this you guys had been supporting the Zombie EP for quite some time. Are you happy with the reception that got?
Daniel: I think that overall people are generally viewing it well. People think it’s a good record, so we’re happy with it. We took notes what everybody was saying about the Zombie EP and took that into account with the new record. I think people will be seeing the influence from Zombie in the new record.

Can you talk about the writing process for Dead Throne compared to Zombie?
Chris: We had some songs written for Dead Throne before Zombie was even thought up. We had a group of heavy/sinister sounding songs, so we were left over with some lighter songs. We went in after Zombie and just wrote the heavier songs to replace what we used on Zombie. It was all from the same timeframe of the past two years or so. Comparing that to Plagues and earlier stuff, it’s more based around writing on the computer since we’re touring so much. We just write on the computer and have band practice for a week and then learn everything as a band. That’s what gives Zombie and Dead Throne kind of a different vibe. The computer via sitting in a room is one of the things that makes the songs sound more metal.

Do you think fans will be able to make the transition fully to the even heavier sounds?
Chris: Yeah, I think fans will think that this is what they were expecting. You could see and define the progression from each record and it’s definitely a step in the progression that I want to go in.

Did the heavier music make for an intense vibe in the studio?
Chris: That and it was the first time we wroekd with our new producer. We worked with Adam from Killswitch Engage. It was the first time we had a real awesome studio experience. There were so many more people involved with Dead Throne than on our past albums just because we had Jeremy from A Day To Remember producing vocals, we had Joey doing keyboards and bells and whistles, and we had Adam who we had never worked with before.
Daniel: There were lots of new elements.
Chris: It was a dream come true without me ever even realizing it. By the time the album was done I knew it couldn’t have gone any better even though I was cooper up in that studio for however long.

You guys released a new song a few weeks ago called “Born To Lose.” Have fans been into it so far?
Chris: One of the problems with picking one song off of a 13-track CD is that every song is different. You can’t pick a song that shows off everything that we do on the CD.
POZ: Will a lot of the album sound similar to that track?
Chris: I’d say that song is really formulated and straight to the point. It’s a good song. The rest of the songs we do a lot of different things on. Each song sounds like a different band, but it sounds like us.

Have you been playing “Born To Lose” live?
Daniel: We have been. We’ll be doing a tour in support of the album in the future and we’ll play a bunch of songs off of it. We’ll probably be releasing another song soon too. We might let out a really heavy fast metal song go.

Will there be a music video at all?
Chris: There’s no solid plan yet, but we are planning on it. It’s not 100%, but we’re definitely doing all of that stuff.

Nothing is on the books for after Warped. Can we expect a big fall US headliner to be coming?
Chris: We will be in the US. I’m not sure when it’ll be announced. It is headlining though. I think we’ll be pretty busy through the rest of the year. Personally, we’re booked until March. We’re doing stuff. It sucks not to be able to say it since it’s so far away.
