PropertyOfZack was lucky enough to have the chance to interview Maika Maile of There For Tomorrow as the band continued to tour with Every Avenue on the Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour. Maika and I discuss his feeling regarding A Little Faster a year after it’s release, the band working towards a new album, and their tour with Ludo in the fall. Be sure to check it out!

For the record, could you state your name and role in There For Tomorrow?
Maika Maile, I sing and play guitar.

You guys are right in the middle of the Rock Yourself To Sleep Tour with Every Avenue. How has it been so far?
It’s been good. Trying to get out in the US during the summer time and revisit fans that we’ve built over the years. For the most part it hasn’t been the biggest blast of a tour, but people have been finding out and coming out.

And for fans that don’t know exactly what exactly Motel 6 has to do with it do you mind explaining?
I think they just wanted to sponsor a tour and get involved in music and they did this.

How have the fans been receiving you guys on stage?
They’ve been great. We’ve always been developing from a live show early on, so our fans know that and always appreciate that we try to keep it real live and try to showcase what we do with our chemistry. Our thing isn’t to have the whole thing bouncing up and down with red cups in our hands and talking about being at the club, but I think it’s just to showcase our chemistry and to just have a good time and let the crowd be a part of that.

Not too long ago you traveled to Japan with Valencia. Besides Anarbor having to drop off for medical reasons how was that?
It was great. It was our second time around. The whole shock value of actually being in Japan on tour wore off because it was our second time around so we could actually pay attention to who was there and who was coming back to the shows and who was coming to multiple shows. We definitely have a bright future in Japan.

Is it awesome getting to play for different cultures?
It’s awesome. The first time we went there it’s just so different not seeing trash in every corner. It’s so different to just see how the people are. The common code there is just to be respectful and to do your job.

A Little Faster was released over a year ago now. How would you say the total reception has been?
It’s been good. It’s been fairly natural. At this point everybody is really understanding that tour music goes deeper than just writing a hit song. Our music goes deeper than just trying to make it to Top 40. So they understand there’s a story behind my life and my perspective. We’re all trying to strive to be unique individuals and they appreciate it. I’d say we have some of the most passionate people in the world on our side.

There For Tomorrow just released the music video for “Deathbed”. Was it cool to shoot it?
Yeah it was cool shooting it. It was great. It was in an old fort. Fort Hancock was a civil war era battery tower, so being able to take it in your own set design into an old historically rich place like that was awesome. Made over the whole thing. It’s like going to the Alamo and pissing on it, like Ozzy Osborne did, but not so bad.

Will it be the records last single?
I think we’re gonna let it naturally play out. We’re not trying to define our band with this record. It’s our first record, you know, half these songs were written when I was 18/19. We’re very open to finding ourselves and we’re very open to new songs. We’re very open to sharing what we’ve learned in the past year and everything.

Being that it has been a year, will you guys be hitting the studio?
Yes, we have tentative plans on when we’re going to hit the studio, but we don’t know exactly. We’re gonna get home after this tour and stat writing our asses off and start writing these ideas. But definitely 2011.

Being that, like you said, half of the songs were written when you were 18/19 is this going to be a more mature, experience driven album?
I could definitely say experienced. I don’t really know how to equate what everything is as far as maturity because there are some things that I was better at when I was 18 than I am now and vice versa; so it’s just gonna step in our lives while we hold true to ourselves. It’ll definitely be the next step for There For Tomorrow.

So you guys would like to have an album out halfway through next year?
Yeah, I mean, you always shoot for dates, but they always get pushed back by this person or that person because they see this reason and this feature could be better. So you never really know, but we’re not really gonna rush it. There’s no need to. We have so much life left in us and so much potential that we see individually that we can not really rush it, but we’re gonna get it done.

Will we be seeing any more tour dates or is the band just going to focus on writing?
We’re going back out in the fall with Ludo. That’ll be great. We’ll be doing direct support for that tour, so that’ll be our chance to kind of get over the boundary of just playing 30 minutes and try to put on a show. We’re very excited for that.

Thanks so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?
No, just follow on Twitter, therefortmrw or add us all individually. All those shameless plugs like that. Thanks.
