After multiple delays, PropertyOfZack is glad to finally be posting our interview with Dave Hause. Dave and I discussed how his solo career has taken off in terms of touring and reception in recent months, how The Loved Ones’s new record is less collaborative than normal, the future for The Loved Ones, and much more. Read up and enjoy!
You kicked off the summer by opening for The Bouncing Souls on their discography tour in New York City. How was that?
I played with The Loved Ones one night and played solo another night. It was great. We had a really good time playing. It was the second show we had done this year. The response was overwhelmingly positive. It was really awesome. The solo show was great too. It was cool to play to a New York City audience where the room was filled up. Both shows were pretty different.
You’ve done quite a bit of solo touring over the last year whether it be with The Bouncing Souls and Hot Water Music in Australia or your own Canadian tour. Has it been an interesting experiencing going from full band touring for so many years to do these large bulk of solo shows?
I did a scattered bit of touring last year, but this year has been pretty intense. I’ve done two trips out to the west coast, a full headlining run on the east coast, two trips to Canada, and Australia and the UK. I’ve just been going hard. It’s been great. I’ve been seeing growth. It’s that feeling that I had when I started The Loved Ones of watching it sort of catch on.
Is it definitely enjoyable to actually be starting over again and to see growth?
A lot of people in our world have released solo records. There are some preconceived notions on what that should be, and I just didn’t make an acoustic punk record. That was never my intention. I’ve never been much of a flag-waving punk. As far as the way I approach music, I don’t think along the lines of what people expect out of a genre. When I set out to make this solo record, I wondered what the expectations were going to be. It’s been exciting for people to respond positively.
Resolutions was released in January via Paper + Plastick. Have you noticed that the album has stayed with listeners as well?
I’m getting responses from people as they get it. I did a week of touring with Alkaline Trio in California and people told me they loved the record. Everything is growing and everything is cool.
How was the writing process for that album compared to your writing with The Loved Ones?
The Loved Ones is more collaborative, or at least the first two records were. I’m not sure how this next Loved Ones record is going to shape up. We’re all busy and two of us live in Brooklyn while two of us live in Philly. I’ve been writing songs for the record, but I’m not sure how collaborative it’ll end up being. The writing process will be done, everyone will put their spices on it, and we’ll record it. It wasn’t that different, other than I wasn’t writing songs to bring to a band. I kept on my own and brought them to the various people that played on the record. It wasn’t all that different, I just approached the songs differently because there were no preconceived notions of what they should sound like.
You mentioned in an interview that you didn’t really expect to be doing so much solo touring, but that things had kind of taken off as of late. Were you thrown off by the recent demand of solo tours?
I’ve embraced it. The Loved Ones have been dormant and haven’t done much of anything. It’ll be interesting once we get moving on the recording of this record. We had a meeting and committed to a recording schedule. We’ll be recording throughout the fall. We’ll release the record next year and will tour on it. I don’t know man, I haven’t given it that much thought. The Loved Ones needed to go on a halt for a little bit to get our bearings. Once you take a break and move on to something else it’s harder to get things moving, which is what we found. Our drummer at the end of 2008 was going through a weird thing where he felt he couldn’t play well. There was some weirdness, and ultimately we needed to take a break for him to get right. You have to go with the flow.
The Revival Tour will be heading to the UK and Ireland. How excited are you for those dates?
I’m really fired up for it. It should be fun. The other songwriters on that tour are really fantastic. They’re old friends. We’re both amped to do the songs. Everybody is ready to do the tour. It’s going to be a really unique tour that probably won’t ever happen again. Everybody is excited. We’ll do something special every night to make it memorable. It’s the tour of the year in my opinion.
When would you like to finish up the next Loved Ones record?
It’s hard to say until you’re in there and moving along. The recording process in this day and age is a lot different than it used to be. We probably won’t book time. We’ll put the record out when it’s done. I’d like to have it done by the end of the year and have it out in the spring. That seems like a potential goal. There are a lot of things going on though, so it’s hard to say.
Is this Loved Ones record going to feel weird for you because half the band is in one place and half is in the other?
Yeah, I’m not sure. It’s feeling like a solo record at this point. I don’t mean that because it sounds like my solo record, but it’s just been me writing the songs without interaction and collaboration because we’ve been busy. It might be kind of weird. It might turn into my next solo record. I don’t really know. It’s all up in the air. We had a meeting and everyone wants to do it, it’s just about finding the time. I’m gone and touring a lot now. Those guys are working and doing other things. We’re trying to get all that together now.
Have there been conversations about more touring plans?
When the record comes out, we’ll tour. It’s a big commitment. Everyone has to realize what they’re getting into. It’d be another record and another year and a half of touring. I don’t know. It’s all hard to predict exactly. There is another Loved Ones record. We just need to make it.
