PropertyOfZack had the chance to speak with Fred from Terrible Things a few weeks ago for a great interview. Fred and I discussed the regrouped band, what the recording process and idea behind their new EP is, getting back into house shows, and much more. Check out the band’s POZ sponsored house show dates here and the interview below!
Things are finally starting to come together after announcing a regrouped Terrible Things this past summer. Can you walk us through the last few months?
Things are finally out of the rebuilding stage. I have a band that I’m really proud of. We’ve played our first dozen or so shows together and there’s been a new energy that I’m really excited about. We’re getting a different reaction from people at these shows. The guys in the bands are friends of mine and they live in town and it feels like a band. As opposed to before when I had people traveling in and all that. It was amazing having those guys in the band, but unfortunately, we never had a chance to feel like a band because of the distance. We could never put the time in. There’s a much bigger difference now. That’s reassuring that the reaction has been good so far.
POZ: Have you been happier too now?
Fred: That’s the other thing. Some of our fans who have come out have told me that I look really happy with this. It’s the show that I want to put on. We play to a video of a black and white movie on these old TVs that I acquired through different Salvation Army stores. It’s more of a show. We’re able to play a longer set because we have a lot of new songs. We still play the old ones as well.
How are the new songs going. You just announced a new EP.
The writing and recording of this EP took a pretty long time because I was trying to be careful of where I was going next. I put out a few full-lengths over the past five years. I always had second thoughts about what I did. I kind of wanted something that could be free of any influence. I have my circle of friends that I’ll let hear new demos. I’ll hear feedback and things, but I’ve abandoned that. I wanted to hear in a new direction. I think it may take people a second, when they hear the new stuff, to get it in their head that it’s me playing on it. It always has my voice and the sound that is me, but it’s definitely going other places with other influences of mine over the years that may have been suppressed. Musicians can get into repetition because they have success with a sound. I wanted something new and different. I wanted to move on to a new chapter. You’ll hear that right away.
How many songs are on the EP?
It’s five. But for those who get the vinyl, I wanted it to be hard to tell. I had this idea, which I eventually called the “unbroken record.” I wanted to make music that just flowed from one song into another. Like a long piece of Beethoven. I felt like no one could do transitions as well as him. I sort of went into that and had these songs and these other parts. I started putting them together. That was the reason that we’re releasing the vinyl first. I want the first people to hear this to hear it continuously. The tracks on the CD will be split up. The intention was for it to be one long piece of music. We’re doing a single-sided 12” vinyl. When guys used to record to vinyl or cassette, you’d think about side one or or side two. Not that I was doing it that many years before CD, because I wasn’t. But when you go back and listen to those albums, there’s tension and release there that doesn’t exist on a 15 song CD anymore. I wanted to be true to rock and guitar music. That’s the instrument I obsess about, so I wanted to go back to those classic records and bring something to new music that hasn’t existed since then.
To support it, there are two house show tours that we’re sponsoring. Are you excited to get intimate with shows again?
The music scene has been drastically changing over the years. I was all for doing something completely different. Not that we didn’t play house shows when I was in college and back then, but as far as us going out and doing it as a tour, that was something that appealed to me. I also hope that these nights don’t feel like you’re at a venue. We’re hoping to really hang out with the people. Besides playing the show we want to sit around and talk afterwards and all that. We were looking at it more of like a night of just hanging out and doing things a different way. That’s what I’m hoping it turns into. We’re really excited to be out with Geoff. I think we have a good lineup for this. I think it’ll be pretty exciting.
