POZ Road Blog: I Call Fives (Update I)

I Call Fives are out on a great fall tour with With The Punches, and we’re stoked to have the band back for a new Road Blog. Check out their first update below!

From Drew Conte:

Friday November 2nd: Mesa, AZ
I went to sleep at 10am as we left Las Vegas….and then I woke up in Arizona at a Jack in the Box. Honestly, it was the worst I’ve felt in all of 2012. Being hung over is never a particularly fun thing, but being hung over in a moving van far away from your bed, shower, and fridge with cold drinks is exponentially worse. We got to Mesa and loaded in and met up with Stickup Kid, they will be joining us for the next 3 shows. They were super nice guys and had a killer set, we played after them and had a great time. We’ve been to Arizona many times over the past 5 years, normally the shows are pretty terrible. This show was definitely unexpected and we appreciate all the Mesa-ians that came out and making this time around different. After the show, we headed to Los Angeles area to our friend Marks house to start our next few shows in California.

Thursday November 1st: Cedar City, UT
We left the hotel and headed to Ogden City..playing 2 shows in Utah is kind of odd. We got to the venue pretty early before load in, the venue was in a shopping center so we walked around a super market (which sold horse saddles and guns) and got snacks at the dollar tree. We threw around the vortex (you remember the football with the whistle) in the parking lot and waited to load in. We ended up playing and both our sets and With the Punches’ were a pretty surprisingly awesome time. We had to drive to Mesa, AZ that night which is about 9 hours so I looked up the directions and saw 2 routes: driving through Vegas or driving through the Grand Canyon. Driving through the Grand Canyon in the middle of the night sounded pretty fucking pointless, so we went to Vegas. I drove and we got there at about midnight, where we met up with The Wonder Years who were already in town because their tour with Yellowcard started the next day. We all got pretty drunk, I had roughly 10 White Russians, and the roulette table absolutely kicked my ass. We got a hotel room that night in Hooters and only one of us actually went to sleep in it. We are idiots. If anyone was wondering, my roulette numbers are 3, 5, 6, 13, 15, 21, 33, and 36.

From Chris McLelland:

When we Left home in June it was a beautiful 80 degrees outside. The closer we got to Florida it grew to be unbearably hot. On our way to Chicago we got out the hoodies. Our first night in California, it was legitimately cold out. And now were in Texas and it’s 104 degrees. The human body was not meant to endure this kind of heat. I feel like a vampire in the sunlight. Im a chicken wing on a grill. We could fill a swimming pool with our sweat. Everything is SO SWAMPY. If I don’t make it tell my parents I love them.

So, our private show in San Diego was pretty rad. We were the only band and we played to a younger crowd so I was a change of pace. But it was sick. Also the guy running the event was Chris from the band Halifax so that was pretty dope.

After the show we went to downtown San Diego for a bit and then drove to a friends apartment to crash out. The Todd and I slept in the van so we could get a good nights sleep while the others raged.

That morning we had to roll early to get to Santa Monica for an interview. We took some showers in the sink at the radio station and did the damn thing.

We headed to our friend buddy’s house in LA to take some showers.

The show that night was in Canoga Park, right outside of LA. We’ve played there a few times and it’s always been rad so we were stoked.

The show didn’t disappoint. It was probably the best show for all of the bands on the tour. Awesome times. Thanks, LA.

We went back to buddy’s, put on 40 Year Old Virgin, and passed out.

The next day killed it. We had a drive that stretched the coast line the entire time so we eventually gave in to the temptation and drove to the beach.

We spent probably two hours getting mauled by monstrous waves and being carried hundreds of yards by the relentless current of the pacific. It was fantastic. I don’t think I had actually experienced California until that day.

After that nights show we split right away for the number one family vacation destination in the US… Las Vegas, NV.

I drive the whole thing out of pure excitement and adrenaline.

When we arrived, at six in the morning, Me, Mike, Zick and Rudi dove right in. Got some McDonalds, some tall boys and headed to the tables.

Nick, a degenerate gambler, was hustled a week prior by a guy playing a “ball and cup” game in an In-N-Out burger. He lost a hundred.

From Chris McLelland:

Wow. I just realized something. This is our fourth weekly blog. That means that we’ve been out for an entire month and more notably, this tour is half way finished. Where the fuck did the time go?! It honestly feels like we met up with WATU and Handguns less than a week ago and it’s crazy to think that in less than a month we’ll be back at home.

With that being said, we are the furthest it gets from home and here’s how we got here.

Last time I blogged, Jeff was taking us on a joy ride through Iowa. The Midwest is REALLY scenic… Except it’s not. But the show that night in Des Moines was pretty sick and my sister sent me cupcakes for my birth day so that ruled hard.

Also, the show got over really early so we all hung out and grubbed together.

That night we drove a few hours to our friends studio in Lincoln, NE where both us and WATU crashed for the night.

Chris, Mike, Jeff and I slept in the attic. The floor was a cool 90 degrees while the air was probably slightly over 100. Still slept like a baby.

When I woke up everyone was getting ready to make a trip to the YMCA where I witnessed the aftermath of senior citizens aquatic aerobics for the second time in my life. It’s never okay. It’s always awkward. Especially when a liver spotted 90 year old man sits his naked ass on your book bag and can’t hear you when you ask him politely to move. This is my nightmare.

The showers were so closely and awkwardly placed together. But I’d rather be uncomfortably close to Drew and Jeff for 90 seconds than smell like a rotten Italian Hoagie.

After our showers we headed back to the studio where we grubbed and Jeff recorded some guest vocals for a friends band.

The show that night started early again and it was pretty sick. Hung with some old friends and made some awesome new ones. Good times.

After the show us, WATU and The JV Allstars pack out the dinning room of Chipotle. Best meal of the tour with some of the best dudes.

After friendsgiving, we had to start driving to Denver which was roughly 8 hours away. I started the drive and got way to into a conversation about LOST with kyle, and before I knew it I was in Colorado and the sun was coming up. I miss LOST. We have to go back. I’m also a loser.

During the drive I turned 25. It was uneventful.

We arrived in Denver at 6 am and crashed for a couple hours at a friends loft.

After a very short sleep, we all woke up and went to a place called Illegal Petes for some free Mexican food. America. Everything’s better when it’s free.

So we went back to the loft, ate, partied a little and headed out for the show.

The venue was a sick DIY place which we always love to see so we were pretty stoked to play.

From Chris McLelland:

Well… I guess it’s been another week. Although it doesn’t seem like it because time is blowing right the fuck by on this tour.

But anyway, when we left off we were driving through Ohio on our way to Louisville. We played a venue called The Carriage House which, I have to note, was literally in the middle of nowhere. There was NOTHING in the area. Seriously, two houses and a karate dojo. So I guess that tells you how that show went.

To the few that came out to that show- you guys rule hard, thank you.

Also, the night wasn’t all bad! We met up with our friend Kyle who is going to be video documenting the next few weeks of the tour. I don’t think he really knows what he got himself into… We’re not really interesting and we are some of the weirdest, most A.D.D. riddled people that god ever cursed the earth with.  So Kyle, for the next few weeks, I’m sorry in advance.

So on the road, with Kyle, we headed to stay with his friend in Toledo. Now, having a place to stay is always a treat and we are ALWAYS appreciative. However, this place was fucking haunted. We’re sure of it. It could have just been that the room that we stayed in was a dungeon/basement with NO outside light or that Mike was freaking out which freaked us out, but when we woke up we were convinced. Rough sleep.

That morning called for the first YMCA trip of the tour. Never not an awkward shower situation but always awesome, none the less.

That day we headed to Mac’s in Lansing, MI which is my absolute favorite bar in the US. Coolest bar tender with the cheapest pitchers ever. Also, it was We are the Union’s “home town” show so it was extra rad.

After the show we didn’t have much luck with a place to stay. But we did not care. We had our hearts set on a Walmart Bar-b-que, anyway. Sausage, hot dogs, cheeseballs, Milwaukee’s best, and burgs on the band. Chris and I are getting pretty damn good at grillin’. just sayin.

From Chris McLelland:

Okay so when we left off we were heading to Charleston which is, honestly, kind of a blur. I guess we took 2pac’s birthday a little 2far. (see what I did there?). However, I do remember Christian and Drew trying to toast an completely demolishing Christian’s Old E bottle. I think he drank it broken glass and all. America.

After the show we drove along with We are the Union to their friends house in Savannah, GA. I suspect the guys made an attempt to wake me up and failed considering I woke up swimming in a pool of my own sweat on the floor of the van. It’s hot in Georgia.

That day, a five hour drive slowly turned to seven as we slowly crawled through the ridiculous Atlanta traffic. Georgia, I like you. But the Atlanta road system can fuck itself. Also, it’s hot in Georgia.

So after the show, finding a place to stay seemed unlikely considering I could have been the father of most of the kids at the show. But, we were headed to sunny Florida an stoked to get there so I started to drive.

Around 8am we arrived at the beach in Clearwater, Florida which, surprisingly, beats the shit out of waking up in a Walmart parking lot. We hung on the beach, took a dip in a hotel pool and headed for Tampa where we were meeting up with WATU to get a couple of hotel rooms for that night to beat the heat.

The hotel idea sounded great. Little did we know…

PropertyOfZack Road Blog : : I Call Fives (Update I)

by Zack Zarrillo - Jun 19, 2011

It’s always nice having I Call Fives do a Road Blog for us here at PropertyOfZack, so we’re glad to welcome back Chris McLelland and the band to do their third installment of the feature. The guys have a long summer ahead of them while out on a great tour with We Are The Union, The Story So Far, and Handguns, so we can’t wait to keep track of it!

From Chris McLelland:

Today I woke up and realized that I wouldn’t see home for almost two months. It’s safe to say that we, along with countless other bands, live one of the strangest lifestyles out there. Over the course of the next couple months, we’ll grow broke, hungry, exhausted and disgustingly sweaty. We’ll sleep on the floor (if we sleep at all). We’ll meet new friends, party with old ones and get borderline sick of eachother. Chris Mullen will drive a majority of the time, Jeff will DEFINITELY turn up the Todd and Drew will clean the van approximately 12,668 times.

I realized all of this among so many other things and it couldn’t have felt better. We do what we do because it’s what we know and love. we wouldn’t have it any other way.

With that being said, here’s what we’ve been up to over the last week:

The first day of tour was typical. We met up with the other bands, everyone introduced themselves and then we immediately forgot eachothers names again. (were all human)

Our first show was at the Barbary in Philly and we had the pleasure of playing with our very good friends from home, Neighborhoods. All in all the show was sick and it left us even more stoked to get on the road.

The next day we headed up to Wilkes Barre, PA for show two. The show wasn’t the best of the tour so far but it gave is some awesome bonding time with the other bands.

For the next 45 days we’ll be out with We are the Union and for the next 20 days our boys in Handguns with be with us too.

So before the show we all hung outside, talked about the tour, nursed a handle of “Old Crow” and started to get to know eachother a little better. I mean, We already know the guys in Handguns so getting along with those pussies surely won’t be an issue. But i can already tell it’s going to be a blast to be on the road with everyone.

From Chris McLelland:

First off, I’d like to tell everyone that we’ve successfully been through our first Canadian tour and made it, safely, back to the United States. With that being said let’s recap the last few days.

Last I wrote, we were watching a shit ton of movies at our friend Eddy’s house. Well some of us watched movies while some of us slept until 4pm. After leaving Eddy’s, we went to a Walmart to have a family grocery shopping sesh, together since EVERYTHING is more expensive up there. Someone please tell me how a McDonalds can charge $1.39 for a McDouble. Its rat meat, rubber and bread. McHorseshit. Either way, we got some food to last us a few days while we were in Canada and we headed to Brampton for show two. On the drive we took some time to write some vocals for the new songs. Super stoked as to how it’s coming out!

From Chris McLelland:

Hey guys! Crazy few days in the world of I Call Fives. So last we checked in, we finished up our time on the east coast and we were starting to make our way up to Kentucky.

The Kentucky show was great. We got to play with our boys in Talk is Cheap which was sick. They’re super nice dudes and a great band. Keep an eye our for their new songs! Anyway, the show was in such a small town, that it had us wondering (even worrying) about how many kids would show up. It’s safe to say that we were very stoked to see how many kids came out and even more excited about the reaction that all of the bands on the show received. After the show, we headed with Rust Belt Lights to our new found friend, Jordan’s house, where he put all of us up to the night. Thanks again, Jordan!

Our trip out of Kentucky, however, was horrifying. Jordan lived in the mountains…Way up in the mountains. So far up that Rust Belt claims to have seen a mountain lion. But that’s neither here nor there. The trip was down some crazy steep and winding roads that had all of us close to messing ourselves. But we made it out alive and that’s what counts.

Next stop Cincinnati, OH.
