PropertyOfZack Interview : : The Swellers

I’d like to thank Nick so much for taking the time out of his touring schedule to answer a few questions, especially as quickly as he did! Don’t forget to check The Swellers out on their upcoming tours.

1. For the record could you state your name and the role you have in the band?
I’m Nick Diener. I sing and play guitar. I write the songs with my brother, our drummer, Jonathan.

2. How’s 2009 been for you? Is it a dream come true to be signed to FBR and to be supporting huge bands on huge tours?

2009 has been incredible. Started off on tour, ended it on tour. Toured the whole time. Made a record. Signed with FBR. I wouldn’t say it was a dream come true, but more like a “this was supposed to happen” kind of thing. We toured so hard on our own; made our own records… it was about time we found the perfect label to work as hard for us as we do out on the road. We’ve paid our dues, and still are, but if the 15-year-old me were to look at me now, yeah, he’d be freaking out.

3. How was the tour with Paramore? You guys seem to be pretty great friends.

I was pretty good friends with Hayley just from liking each others’ bands and corresponding on the internet, but from the tour, both of our bands became really good friends! The tour was huge. Sold out shows, really eager and friendly kids, got to play our music to a lot of people who would otherwise not dabble in our style of music. It was a huge success for everyone.

4. What’s the hardest part about going on tour and leaving home for months at a time?

The hardest part for me is having to go back home after the tour. I don’t like not playing our songs every day. People at home just barely can relate to me anymore. I get homesick once in awhile, but then remember my job is really fun. Wouldn’t rather do anything else!

5. The Less Than Jake tour is just finishing up, was it one of the better tours the band has been a part of?

Less Than Jake tour is one of the most fun and chilled out tours we’ve ever done. We’re friends with everyone on the tour so it’s just a big, good hangout. Less Than Jake are the best dudes ever.

6. Is the band pleased with the reaction to Ups And Downsizing? It seems to be getting received rather well.

We’re very happy that people are enjoying it! It’s our favorite record we’ve made so far. Glad that people can appreciate our work. Babysteps. Slowly going places.

7. Was My Everest or Ups And Downsizing easier to write for you, lyrically and musically?

I’d say we took more time on Ups and Downsizing. We knew in our hearts that more people were going to hear this one, and we wanted this one to hit closer to home for us as well. Lyrics are always hard to fit in perfectly.. but we’re very happy with how it came out!

8. You guys recently went through a lineup change on bass, will this hopefully be the last of many lineup changes we’ve seen the band go through in the past?

Absolutely. The former swellers members basically just couldn’t handle being on tour as much as we toured. It’s understandable. Now we have Ryan and Anto.. formerly of other touring bands. They have experience and want this as much as we do. Great friends as well.

9. A lot of fans we’re very, very happy when they saw the lineup for Motion City Soundtrack’s upcoming tour to support their new album. How excited is the band to be a part of that lineup with This Providence and Set Your Goals?

We are friends with set your goals and this prov already, and big fans of motion city, so this will be one of the most fun tours we’ve done by far. Only complaint is that it’s so short! But it’ll be some quality shows for sure. Really excited to watch each band play every night.

10. You and your brother always seem to tweet your favorite food places on the road, where are some of your favorite places to stop and get food while on tour?

Jonathan and I really love checking out awesome Mexican places or specialty vegan restaurants. Green in Tempe, AZ, The Veggie Grill in LA, Chicago Diner in.. well, Chicago. We’re down to try anything!

11. Are there any plans set in stone after the MCS tour is over? What can we expect to see in 2010?

Looking like some shows here and there, Europe, and hopefully something like

Warped over the summer. We’re stoked to just keep touring and touring!

12. Thank you so much for your time, is there anything else you’d like to add?

Thanks for the interview! Hope all is well. Take care, everybody.

PropertyOfZack Interview : : Moving Mountains

On November 8th, 2009, I was given the pleasure to interview Gregory Dunn from Moving Mountains on the last stop of their tour opening for Straylight Run. For anyone wondering, Greg was an extremely nice guy and answered all of my questions, and your questions with extreme detail and care. So thank you Greg, everybody enjoy the interview!

For the record could you please state your name and role in the band?
Greg: My name is Gregory Dunn, I sing and play guitar in the band Moving mountains

So a year ago you guys were playing hometown shows around Purchase, NY and doing mini tours throughout the country and in recent months you’ve toured with Thursday, Say Anything, and Straylight Run…
Greg: Yeah, it’s been crazy.
Zack: Did you expect to be anywhere like this?
Greg: No, every like year interval you look back and you’re like, “holy crap, I totally didn’t see that coming.” Yeah, this last six months have just been insanely good for us in terms of touring and exposure and legitimizing ourselves. It’s been awesome.

A year ago on online forums you guys were building up your name, and then I was reading an interview interview with Max Bemis and he named you guys as one of this favorite bands…
Greg: Yeah, that’s actually how we got on that tour. I noticed that Max was talking about us, so I emailed him and I was like, “Dude, that’s so crazy that you like my band.” And he was like, “Dude, I love your band.” So I said we should tour and he was like, “yes.” And it was so surreal and so awesome I was so thankful and grateful that he was willing to take us out on tour. We were so excited.

Which of these three tours (Thursday, Say Anything, Straylight Run) have been the best for you?
Greg: They’re all different. The part of the Thursday tour was just the most stressful, and most surreal experience. Just because Thursday was the band that motivated us to even be in a band. They were the band that when I was a kid I was like, “holy shit, music is so much more than just music.” So that was really insane and definitely the craziest experience of my life, just those couple dates with Thursday. Say Anything was just so much fun, because they’re just the coolest dudes, and it was so much fun every night. It was such an insane surreal experience. And this Straylight tours been cool, just because it’s been our home market. It’s almost nice to come back to these 200 capacity venues and be nice and up-close and intimate, in our hometowns, which we haven’t done in a couple months. So yeah, they’re all awesome in different regards.

It’s the last day of the Straylight tour, should there be any pranks?
Greg: Unfortunately we haven’t been on this tour long enough. But on the Say Anything tour, we had like the Blame Canada theme song blasting through the speakers when they went to play.

I had some fans turn in some questions…Going out of the country anytime soon?
Greg: Um, we get offered and asked all the time, more often that we get tours here in the States. And we really wanna do it; we might do it next year. We just wanted to tackle the US first; we hadn’t even toured the West Coast until about a month ago. We’re gonna stop touring after this and write a new record and see where that takes us.
Zack: Full length release?
Greg: Yeah, we’re doing a full length for the first time with all four members. We’re so excited to start writing.
Zack: Will it be similar to Foreword or what?
Greg: No, we want to do something different. I don’t really know yet because we haven’t started, but I have a bunch of ideas. We don’t want it to be similar to Foreword.
Zack: Should we expect a completely different sound?
Greg: No, not completely different. We sort of want to stray a little bit away from these like 10 minute, long, unnecessarily, theatrical songs
Zack: You guys can’t really play too many in a set.
Greg: Yeah, that was one thing. On the Say Anything tour we were playing 20 minute sets, only playing four songs and we’d have to even cut down some of those songs because they were so long. We just want to make like a solid 8 or 10 song record, with good song after good song with no filler.

In 2010 do you guys have any more tours set up or are you just gonna go home and relax?
Greg: We kept getting offered stuff, but we really just want to get back and start writing.

Some more fan questions, would you guys ever record any live stuff?
Greg: Yeah, it’s funny you ask that. Tonight actually, we were offered to have our set recorded but we said no ‘cause it cost too much money. But that’s one thin we really want to do, not just audio. But we want to have a really good recorded set of us playing live because I think our live aspect is so different from our record, and I want people to see that just as much as they would listen to us on a CD. If there’s any like artistic college students who want to do it for free, you should hit me up [Laughs].

The biggest fan question was, would you reveal the meaning behind “Sol Solis”?
Greg: “Sol Solis?” Um, wow, I haven’t thought about that in a while. Its funny, people always come up and ask these really in-depth questions about Pneuma and it’s been so long. It’s like; it’s going to be a tough question.
Zack: A couple people asked that one actually.
Greg: All I really remember is being really depressed and while I was writing lyrics, feeling really stupid and selfish that I was talking about girls and stupid things. So I just assigned different figurative attachments to different things. So the sun represented something that was literal to me, and “Sol Solis” is another way of saying sun. In the grand scheme of the record the sun was the representation of something in my life at the time, and that song is the pinnacle of the record. It was about one of my first actual relationships, and how crappy that can be. Dude, it’s so weird. People always ask me and I’ve so far detached myself from it.
Zack: It’s definitely a fan favorite.
Greg: Yeah, it is. Dude, I met this girl last night at the show who came up to me and was telling me her explanation of the record and it was the first time anyone has ever like hit it straight on the head. She took from the record exactly what was meant to be, that happened to me. And it was so weird, it was so strange.
Zack: That must’ve been a great feeling.
Greg: It’s the first time it’s happened. I met this one guy in Arizona who was a pastor at a church and it was a non-denominational church, so it wasn’t like Christian strict, but he was like, “we recite ‘Ode We Will Burry Ourselves’, I print it out and hand it to people.” By all means I am not a Christian nor am I someone who loved God at the time of that record and these people are reciting it at church. That’s a totally different interpretation, but that’s awesome, so by all means take it. But yeah, “Sol Solis,” I don’t know. I guess its just about falling in and out of love, and the hardships of all that cheesy stupid stuff.

And to finish up, John Nolan, is he a pretty big inspiration to you guys, since you’re on this tour right now?
Greg: Yeah dude, Straylight’s awesome. One of my friends mentioned that he was friends with Will, the drummer of Straylight and I was like, “I have to meet him and be friends with him.” So it’s been so cool. John Nolan’s a cool dude and the band rules.

Well, thank you so much. Anything to add at all?
Greg: I’m tired and I’m excited to go home tonight.

12 November 09

PropertyOfZack Interview : : The Dangerous Summer

On 11/8/09 I had the opportunity to interview Cody Payne from The Dangerous Summer on their tour with Straylight Run. He was a really great guy and gave a lot of good info on what to expect in 2010 for The Dangerous Summer. Anyway, check it out!

For the record, could you please state your name and role in the band?
Cody: I’m Cody, and I play guitar in The Dangerous Summer

Six months ago you guys released Reach For The Sun, what bands influenced you to make that?
Cody: Um, probably like Jimmy Eat World, Rise Against, Texan & Sara, Polar Bear Club. A lot of bands like that.

Most of the reception for the record has been really good off the bat from sites like AbsolutePunk
Cody: Yeah, a lot of the reviews have been awesome.

And AbsolutePunk is sponsoring a tour for you guys with Mercy Mercedes right?
Cody: Yeah, we go out on that in like two days actually.
Zack: That should be pretty big for you guys.
Cody: Definitely

Six months to a year ago did you have any idea you guys would be here?
Cody: A year ago we were hardly even a band so [laughs].

And tonight’s the last night of the Straylight tour, how’s John Nolan and everybody?
Cody: It’s one of the coolest tours we’ve been on. We get along with everyone. It’s been cool. The draws have been all right, but it’s been fun.
Zack: Are these some of the biggest shows you’ve played?
Cody: Yeah the East coast shows have been bigger. The West coast shows were a little smaller.
Zack: And at the nd of the year, Mayday Parade..
Cody: Yeah, Mayday, that should be huge. We’re real pumped for that.

Lately we’ve been seeing that there may be pre-production for a new album, what’s up with that?
Cody: When we’re home we’ve been writing, we have a few song ideas. Nothing’s really come together, we don’t have any lyrics or anything. Nothing’s recorded, but we’re just trying to be prepared for when we do do an album.
Zack: Are you planning for one early next year or…?
Cody: Probably late 2010, is when we would really like to release something.

Are there any tours set in stone for next year?
Cody: We plan on being on tour all of early 2010 up until maybe the fall.
Zack: What about the UK?
Cody: Hopefully, if we get an offer we’ll do it, but it’s expensive to go over there. We’re not quite that big yet.

And when you are on tour, what do you usually miss most?
Cody: Just the privacy. Having your own bed, having your own room. The home life.

What’s been the best thing about all these tours this year?
Cody: The fact that they’ve been getting bigger, and we’re on more legitimate ones. We started out on no name tours and no one was going out on any of them. Now it’s the end of the year and we’re with Straylight Run and legitimate bands.

So what do you see in the distant future for The Dangerous Summer?
Cody: Um, hopefully just bigger and bigger tours. Work up to a new album that does well and just keep going I guess. We want to do worldwide stuff and get out of just the USA thing.

And how do you feel about the music industry?
Cody: I think it’s hard to keep up with. Trends are coming and going. No one knows what’s going to come next. You need to stay on top of it.
Zack: Do you truly care about album sales, or is it more about just trying to get as many people to come and see you and get your name out there?
Cody: I mean, I would prefer people would go out and buy it because it keeps the music industry running. And if your label sees that people are buying it and they’ll put more money into you and give you more opportunities rather than just hoping people listen to you.
Zack: Definitely understandable. Well, thank you for your time, have a great show.

A big thank you to Cody for letting me interview him.

A Brand New Interview With Brand New

I understand there’s a shift in the dynamic of this album, with Vinnie taking over a lot of the reigns in writing the lyrics. What happened here?
Lacey: Everyone has always had the opportunity to write anything that anyone wants in the band, it’s just when we started this record Vinnie came with so much already. It had nothing to do with me; it had everything to do with Vin. He just came with everything completed already and it was so good we were all really excited as a band to follow his lead.
Accardi: A lot of times when we have breaks on tour, I continue to go into our friend Mike [Sapone]’s studio and work out anything I have. When we started the record, I kind of had more material than we usually start with when going in to write a record, which was good because we wound up with a shortage at some point. Things just kind of spilled over as they did and turned into us working on everything together and filling in the weeks. I don’t think there was ever a point where I raised my hand and said I want to do this now; I think it’s my turn.
Lacey: You probably just noticed me being lazier about things.
Accardi: A little bit.
Lacey: Instead of stopping at the point he usually did when he was writing a song to let us put whatever we’re supposed to put on it, he just took it further than he normally does. Instead of taking it 50 percent, he did it 75 or 80 or 100 percent.

Check out the full interview here.

(Coming Soon) An Interview With Wait! Rewind That

Tomorrow I’ll be posting an interview with a Chris and Johnny, who are in charge of Wait! Rewind That. Instead of giving you guys a typical band interview, these are two aspiring music producers who do great work!

5 October 09

Official Interview: Every Atlas

1. For the record, state your band’s name and yours.

Every Atlas is composed of Dustin Andrews (Guitar/Vocals) and Alex Periera (Guitar/Vocals)

2. What kind of music do you two play, and where does the inspiration for the music come from?

A: I guess it’s kind of an indie/acoustic thing. It’s like singer/songwriter, but we both sing and write the songs.

D: I think it comes from a wide range of things. There’s day to day events that inspire us and just life in generally. Musically, at least right now we were very inspired by bands like Right Away, Great Captain!, Kevin Devine, Neutral Milk Hotel, Tigers On Trains, andBright Eyes.

3. Now Alex, I know you began to do some solo shows this summer, or to be more modest open mics, but did those experiences give you inspiration to go out and start playing with Dustin?

A: I definitely felt during those shows that something was missing. On the other hand, that was the first time I really played songs that I had written for a decent sized audience. I used to usually play a lot of covers, so I think those shows kind of made me feel more confident about playing original music because the response I got was great.

4. Dustin, what’s your favorite song you’ve written for Every Atlas?

D: Well I’m sure it will eventually change, as it has several times before, but as of right now it would have to be Figurehead. During the writing of this song it was a completely different concept to me as opposed to what Alex thought it was. And I thought if i could do that for one person, as an artist, isn’t that the goal? Isn’t that what any person who writes a song ultimately wants to achieve? If that is the outcome of this song i will be very pleased.

5. What exactly is the story behind your 8-minute epic, “Ghost Story”?

A: It’s definitely the most collaborative song we’ve done. Dustin wrote the rhythm and we each wrote our own verses. Afterwards I wrote a lead for it and we recorded it in two hours. It came out better than we could have expected. The idea in that song… it’s the last part of a five part story of this sailor… and in the end not only is he falling apart as a person, but his ship is falling apart too. It just kind of has this very lost feel to it. After leaving his wife and maybe even kids behind to find happiness or whatever it is he wanted to find, he’s no better off than where he started. I think there’s something beautiful about that. It’s almost saying you can’t find happiness… it has to find you.

D: And the often mentioned “Annabelle“‘s meaning to me in the simplest way is the taker of anything loved. She has quite a few appearances throughout these songs, and she takes on many different forms, but holds the same meaning.

6. I hear there’s an EP or an LP in the works, could you shed some light on the future?

Definitely. We have our first full-length coming out on iTunes in November called The Ghosts of Everyone. We’re also putting out a free EP of covers and songs that didn’t make the record. That should be available fairly soon.

7.  What has the Internet done for your exposure? It’s always interesting to see how much of a positive or negative effect it has.

D: The internet has been very helpful in everything we do. I do wish we had a more physical way of handling our exposure. Whether it be more shows or whatever really. We’re slowly but surely getting there.

A: Every Atlas probably wouldn’t be here without the internet. That’s where all our fans are, that’s how we met our producer, and that’s how we’re releasing our album.

8. This will be the most serious question you ever get in an interview. Alex, Dustin, if Jesse Lacey asked to have sex with either of you, what would you do?

A: I would probably have to let him, only because of the hope that some of his talent would rub off on me. Or in me.

D: I would murder my dear friend Alex. That way I know Jesse would have no other choice.

A: We could always pull a threesome you know. J-Lace has gorgeous eyes.

9.  Team Kanye or Team Swift?

A: That’s a tough one. Kanye wins in musical talent, but he also wins in doucheiness. T-Swift is super pretty, but I’m not a big fan of country. But I’ll go on record saying I like a few Taylor Swift songs.

D: I’ll go with Team Kanye. Solely because I don’t care haha.

A: YO DUSTIN, IMMA REALLY HAPPY FOR YOU AND IMMA LET YOU FINISH, BUT ALEX HAD ONE OF THE BEST RESPONSES OF ALL TIME. OF ALL TIME.

10. What was your most anticipated release of this year? And in your opinions, which has been the best release of this year to date?

A: My most anticipated of this year was Daisy. It was a good record, but not best of this year. The best release of this year is definitelyAtlas And The Oyster by A Love Like Pi (www.myspace.com/alovelikepi). I doubt many people know about them, but they’re a phenomenal band. Kevin Devine and fun. also put out really good records. 2009 has been a great year for music.

D: My most anticipated was hands down Manchester Orchestra’s Mean Everything to Nothing. It was so good it wins over my best of the year as well.

11. What’s the writing progress like? It is done together as a team project or do you each write songs separately and share them after they have been completed?

Each song is different. Sometimes we have whole songs done ourselves, and other times we write together. I think a lot gets done once we’ve recorded the basic structure of the song and then we both build from there by adding parts and finding harmonies.

12. Where do you guys stand on the current legal vs. illegal downloading argument across the country?

A: I’m all for illegal downloading. I hope people care enough to illegally download our music. I think vinyl is going to take the place of CD’s. It’s definitely coming back. Half the bands I listen to I’ve downloaded illegally,  but I support them in some way by going to a show, or paying for a copy when I can.

D: I agree with Alex. I feel as long as it’s given back in some way then all is well.

A: I think we should kill all the fans of shit bands like Brokencyde and Blood On The Dance Floor and use their money to keep hard-working talented bands alive.

13. Is there anything else you guys would like to add?

A: Thanks for taking the time to ask us questions. Hopefully we weren’t too awkward. This was our first time. I’m glad you were gentle.

D: Even though this was an online interview my pathetic ass was sweating and trembling haha. The questions were great and all in all it was fun.

Be sure to check us out at http://www.myspace.com/everyatlas

If you buy our record when it comes out we’ll most likely throw a parade for you.

(Coming Soon) An Interview With Every Atlas

Later on today I will be posting my official interview with Every Atlas. Stay tuned, you wont want to miss it!

3 October 09

PropertyOfZack Interview : : Fire Torpedoes!

Fire Torpedoes! is an alternative pop-rock band that was formed late
in the summer of 2008. Since then they have played with a number of
local bands from the Eugene area at various venues such as The
District and The WOW Hall. All of the band songs were recorded at
Daddy Kupka Records, but the band takes more pride in live
performances. Their first song “My Own Escape” was originally recored
in November 2008 and since then 7 songs have been tenderly written.
With a loyal fan base and riveting live performances, Fire Torpedoes!
is a fun loving band that loves long walks on the beach and mango ice
cream.

So, for the record state your band’s name, your names, and your hometown

We are Fire Torpedoes!, from Eugene, Oregon. Our members are Matthew
Kupka on Guitar and Vocals, Connor Sheehan on Guitar and Vocals, Tyler
Giard on Bass, And Patrick Glang on Drums

I know you guys haven’t been around for too long but what do you hope
to do in the next 6 months to year?

Matt: Probably just playing a bunch more shows, and writing and
releasing some more music
Connor: I would like to do Taylor Swift, but if that doesn’t happen,
what Matt said

What’s your favorite song to play live? And do you play any cover songs?

Matt and Tyler: Untitled, hands down
Connor: Yeah I really like Untitled, and C U Next Tuesday is really
fun too. As for covers… our first 2 shows we only had 3 songs written,
so we covered Creep by Radiohead, Teenagers by My Chemical Romance,
and Dammit by blink-182. After we wrote more music we kept covering
Dammit, but then switched to Not Good Enough For The Truth in Cliché,
by Escape The fate. But now we are staying away from covers because we
have more originals that can be fit into our set

What’s the story behind the most meaningful song you’ve made?

Matt: probably untitled, it’s hard to explain, which is why its
untitled because putting what I was feeling into words was really
really hard, but the instrumentals portray it so well, like the minor
to the major section
Tyler: our new song about Zelda, because she is my first true love and
i would fight any foe for her
Connor: I would have to say With This Last Breathe just because of how
much emotion I put into the lyrics and how long it took to make the
song into what it is. My Own Escape is pretty meaningful too because
it’s our first ever song.

How did you end up with the two singer combination? Any Taking Back
Sunday influence?

Connor: When we started out we were gonna get a lead singer, but
before we did we just both sang and realized that worked really well
for us and we both liked singing a lot.
Matt: But we are also really influenced by Taking Back Sunday, so much
to a point that we sat in Connor’s room listening to Cute Without The
E and trying to figure out a way to completely copy the ending dual
vocals

What are your top 3 favorite albums of all time?

Tyler: umm… Tell All Your Friends, any Daphne Loves Derby album, my
favorite song by them is Middle Middle, so Strength of all the
Convicted, and American Art by Weatherbox
Matt: probably any one of the My Chemical Romance albums… probably an
album by Taking Back Sunday, probably the first one… and then the
first Escape The Fate album… fuck what’s it called
Connor: Dying is your latest fashion
Matt: yes. That one. How did I not know that?
Connor: I would have to say Whatever and After, Amen by Ben Folds, So
Long, Astoria by The Ataris, and probably… an album by The Cure…
Disintegration is amazing, but Boys Don’t Cry is my favorite song by
them…

Jules or Abigail?

Matt: Juliet hands down, she is more attractive
Connor: Tyler is that true? Cause I would say Abigail is more attractive
Tyler: Juliet is perfect.
Matt: Yeah Tyler and I can look more than skin deep
Connor: well I also pick Jules, but im just saying, Abigail, if you
want to give me a call im single.

Who are your biggest musical influences and what do they mean to you?

Tyler: Daphne Loves Derby, because they have always been my favorite
band, they just speak to me. Same with Weatherbox.
Matt: I like Taking Back Sunday cause of the whole dual vocals thing
and I like how they rely more on the singing, even though Adam kinda
suck live. And Escape the Fate because they were like the first
post-hardcore band I ever liked and even now I don’t like any more
hardcore band, and sometimes ETF pushes it, but I kinda like that. And
Money’s guitar playing is amazing. And Foxy Shazam because they are
just so far out there
Connor: Yellowcard and blink-182 were the first bands that really got
me into music, but then lyrically I really like Brand New and Meg &
Dia. Im also the one in the band who is known for like “Disney channel
music” like Hey Monday and Stereo Skyline!

To break it up a little, I know you guys had to watch the VMAs..what’d
you think of the ‘New Moon’ trailer?

Matt: Well New Moon… I actually watched that online because I couldn’t
watch the VMA’s and I was pretty impressed, you know Jacob looked
pretty hot without his shirt on
Connor: Yeah his shirt was off a lot
M: But the only thing I didn’t understand is when Bella was in her bed
going “OOOOHHHH NOOOOO”. That part made no sense, but it made me
excited and I really want to go see it at Midnight
Connor: I basically agree with everything Matt said, and I also want
to add that Bella and Alice looked really attractive. Oh and so did
Jacob.

How did you guys get together, any interesting story behind that?

Matt: We got together when Connor and I were playing joke music, and
like messing around
Connor: My Chemical Romance
Matt: Haha we would play like My Chem songs every day, and then we
tried to write our own music and decided to start a band, and during
soccer I met Patrick and he wanted to play drums. Oh and the first
song we ever played was All The Small Things, but it was a lot slower
than it was supposed to be because he didn’t know the drum part
because he was too lazy to learn it. And then he quit like a month
ago, but then he came back so other than that it’s been good
Connor: We were also originally called The Retreat, and had this kid
Reyn on bass, but then he quit and we got Tyler. So once Pat fake quit
we kinda realized we wouldn’t be the same band we were before which is
when we changed the name to Fire Torpedoes! after around a month of
having no luck coming up with one. Matt just shouted it out one time
while we were searching through books for a name.
Tyler: I basically played bass and set them up with shows, so I said I
would fill in for a while, and played my first show without ever
practicing, but then I just kept playing and I didn’t actually join
until like when Patrick quit

On stage what are the most embarrassing things that have happened to you guys?
Matt: um… I broke a string one time in a super vital part and we
basically fell apart and had the stop and start again, and then I had
to use Connor’s guitar on the next song, it sucked. And then… our
whole first show, just in general was an embarrassment
Connor: well once during Dammit I was playing and 3 guys came up on
stage and started grinding on me, it was awesome at the time, but
looking back I realized “oh fuck parents and future girlfriend were
there watching this all happen.”
Matt: there was this really awkward time where I was talking and
Connor cut me off and then we were just kinda silent for a bit
Connor: I don’t remember this at…
Matt: NEXT QUESTION
Tyler: When I first played with them, the Fire Torpedoes!, and I
hadn’t practiced with them and I only knew a couple of the songs…
Connor: By a couple you mean Dammit
Tyler: …Yeah I only knew Dammit. And so for most of the set I played
the root note of whatever key we were in and just danced
Connor: but then you also had all the tabs written out so paper was
all over your part of the stage. But after the show everyone came up
to me and was like “dude that new kid Tyler is badass, I loved his
dancing” so it all worked out. Also one time I got asked to sign
someone’s nipples (a guy), it wasn’t embarrassing for me, but both of
our girlfriends were embarrassed

How many shows have you played and do you have more lined up for the future?
Currently we have played 4 shows, and this one acoustic show, but that
doesn’t really count because half the band wasn’t there. We are also
in the process of booking a bunch more shows at this very moment, so
if your in the Northwest keep an eye out because we might be headed
your way!
